May-31-18  sydbarrett: Wally is a drawmonger as I can tell by how his fortunes skyrocket when the chess market is on a drawish trend. I salute him and his accurate market analysis ;-) Lots of good laughs boys, but I can't join in. Maybe next leg, when there will be more joy from me to share! :D Keep going for gold, the rest of you
May-31-18  Count Wedgemore: Yep, for the more sophisticated players, like me and <syd> it's been hard to keep up with these miserable drawmongers. But come Summer Leg, we will be back with a vengeance. Count on it!

Chessgames Bookie: <morfishine: Hey, the Loan shark "loaned" me 500 chessbucks I didn't ask for. Is this normal?>

I'm not sure exactly what you are saying happened <morf>. All of the loan transactions are handled by the head honchos @ <chessgames>. I have nothing here I can look at to see what might have happened. Let me talk to the boss & see if we can figure it out.

chessgames.com: <Hey, the Loan shark "loaned" me 500 chessbucks I didn't ask for. Is this normal?> Not at all. I checked our logfiles and I see you making three loans recently, on May 29, May 30, and May 31. That includes the one for 500 on May 30th that you said never requested. I doubt it's any kind of a "hack" because it's all under one of the IP addresses you usually use. I won't rule out the possibility of a bug but is there any chance that you were playing around late at night and simply forget? To me that seems the simplest explanation.
May-31-18  morfishine: <chessgames.com> Thanks, no big deal, its all fun anyways and you are probably right

Usually though, I would spend the bucks right away. In this case, I just woke up the next morning and saw the increase?!?

I probably hit the button and went to sleep! lol

fun game

Chessgames Bookie: Ok it has been brought to my attention that Ding Liren has been in a bicycle accident & will not be able to play in round 4 or possibly the rest of the tournament.

http://norwaychess.no/en/2018/05/31...

I hope Ding Liren is not too badly injured & wish him a speedy recovery.

I will be refunding Round 4 bets on the Ding Liren-Caruana game.

Chessgames Bookie: I have refunded all bets on the Ding Liren-Caruana game.

I will still keep the 'Knights vs. Bishops' bet alive but instead of 5 boards we will probably only have 4 boards now.

I am not sure how Norway Chess will handle this situation we will just have to wait & see.

Jun-01-18  mike1: if Ding is out... (hope he gets better and well soon!) are we having a refund for the " Winner" bets (for him, that is) as well

That is a possibility <mike1>. Let's not move too fast on this just yet though. I would like to wait till we hear what the Norway Chess organizers say on the matter. We will have to be a little patient here.

Jun-01-18  zborris8: <mike1: are we having a refund for the " Winner" bets (for him, that is)>

Not just a refund for his bet. It would need to be a refund for all the "Winner" bets as his absence would change the entire dynamic.

  Penguincw: <Refund 'Winner' Bets>

Of course, before we do that, let's make sure he actually withdraws from the tournament. Who knows? He thinks he'll be well enough to play the rest of the tournament.

What's the normal procedure for this? The only time I recall something similar to this is in 2012 when Morozevich withdrew and Bologan took over. (Chessgames Bookie chessforum (kibitz #6560))

In any case, once all of it is settled, I think it would be a good idea to put up an in-tournament winner bet (if Carlsen is running away with it, I guess the only option is Carlsen vs. the rest of the field).

Chessgames Bookie: Everyone calm down. Let's wait & see what happens. Patience!
Jun-01-18  centralfiles: There's a very good case for refunding Knights vs Bishop as well as the smaller the sample the less likely the favorite wins.
Jun-01-18  Marmot PFL: Liren withdrawal would not affect any other winner bets, since he had played less than half his games. Besides that he had no decisive results so no one's chances are either harmed or helped.

Actually I would not even refund Liren's bets. Though break, but at the end of the day if you don't win that's life. His chances of catching Carlsen were very slim anyway, maybe 1 in 12.

As to whether Ding plays any more my bet is that he at least tries, but the doctors have the final say there.

Funny you waited till almost all of the games were over to mention this <centralfiles>. I will pay off the bets for the 'Knights vs. Bishops' bet. 4 boards is plenty to work with.

Chessgames Bookie: In the 'Knights vs. Bishops bet there were 2 knights & 2 bishops left in the four final positions. Therefore the 'Tie' ticket will pay.

Sneaky: What's this? Karjakin can actually WIN a game?!

Chessgames Bookie: I will not be offering any bets on any of the Ding Liren games until we are sure he is coming back. If Norway Chess & Ding Liren's doctors clear him to resume play I will start posting his games again.

Chessgames Bookie: Way to go <Sneaky>! I see you are living up to your handle & creeping up the leaderboard.
Jun-01-18  centralfiles: Actually I only realized it then I was trying to watch games and first read the news of the accident . At the time of my posting it appeared that bishops would win. Being that bookie betting is all about odds the fair thing would be to cancel a bet whose odds were changed to favor tie significantly.

To be more precise in a 2 game round the odds would favor tie by a large margin while in a 10 game round the odds for tie would be quite small so the difference between 4 and 5 games is by no means trivial.

Sneaky: Once I made a bet on a baseball team because their star pitcher was opening. But he hurt his shoulder practicing just an hour before the game! So they put in a second-string pitcher and they lost.

Of course I was mad but obviously there are no refunds. Imagine how mad I would have been if my team won, but the bet was canceled because the OTHER team's pitcher was hurt? It just doesn't work that way. When I made my bet a I assumed the tiny risk that something weird like that might happen. It's called gambling for a reason.

Chessgames Bookie: I am working now on having all of the bets for Ding Liren refunded in the 'Pick the Winner' bet. <chessgames> has the software to re-calibrate this bet as if Ding Liren was never in the contest. At least that is how it was explained to me. Give me a little time to get all of this done. Sometimes the wheels turn slowly @ <chessgames>.

Penguincw: Good decision. I believe when Morozevich fell ill back in Biel 2012, his lines were refunded as well.

I do know there's some text somewhere saying that if a player leaves a tournament mid-way, their lines stand, but I imagine that only applies if they do so out of protest, rather than injury or illness.

Of course, it doesn't hurt to take your time on making such a decision.
