Chessgames Bookie: Round 4 starts 2hrs earlier(12:00 CET - 06:00 EDT). Be sure to get your picks in on time!
Jun-21-18  sydbarrett: Wesley So is not a member of my stable... :-/

If this trend continues... I guess I'll go for the win NEXT leg hehe. It's not ever yet--- Go Aronian! Go Naka! Go Sergei! go Donner! go Blitzer

OhioChessFan: This is tough. I'm on a little bit of a losing streak, although just small wagers.
Jun-21-18  sydbarrett: I was referring to the big "Rapid Winner" race. I have 6000 bucks put in it. But Wesley was not one the horsies I bet on

Chessgames Bookie: Congratulations to GM So on winning the Paris GCT Rapid portion of the contest with a score of 12/18!!!

The rapid portion of the contest is over & the blitz starts tomorrow. If you don't have a strategy in place now is the time to put one in place. Two days of blitz to go. Good luck to all!

OhioChessFan: I always felt it'd sound like sour grapes to complain about the contest when I wasn't doing well. Not that it stopped me, but I didn't let free with my objections. But now, in the lead for maybe another day or two, I have to complain again about the ridiculous sight of seeing people with 5 digit negative scores. That is just a total mockery of the game.

There is supposed to be <some> correlation with the real world in this game. What Bookie in his right mind in the real world would let someone off the hook for $20,000 every 3 months? Not happening. Here, there's really no price to be paid for it. And so it happens. And it's not right. Because there's no price to be paid, people keep doing it and instead of predicting chess results, they just toss money at long-odds results and hope something comes through. Is that really the point of this contest?

I'll leave the whining at that. As for a positive suggestion, then may I suggest a yearly total standings contest, lose 15,000 this quarter, lose 15,000 on your yearly standings score. Maybe even let <that> be the yearly Bookie winner instead of the single quarter contest that is the current model.

OhioChessFan: Does anyone else find this inexplicable? Chessbucks bet on the Rapids winner:

Aronian 4089
Mamedyarov 3858
So 3333
Caruana 3307!
Karjakin 3112
MVL 3103
Grischuk 3102
Anand 3043
Nakamura 2600
Kramnik 2064

I don't even need to go over this to say how bizarre it is. Obviously So and Caruana drawing the same amount of betting is the biggest head scratcher. Ah well.

Chessgames Bookie: I've been pondering similar things to what you have shown <OCF>. I stopped trying to figure it out. This is like 'fantasy' gambling. I say let the members have fun. In the long run you walk away feeling good because you know there are no real life consequences.

Annie K.: <Ohio> if nobody tried betting on long shots, the rest of us could only find bets with really poor odds. It's not "cheating" by any definition, there's nothing wrong with it, and it stimulates the economy (having a nice pool on the long shots to bet against is an incentive for a larger overall pool), so you should be glad there will always be some who take that route.

<WinKing> Hmm, given that (at chess24 anyway, I'm too lazy to look at the official site just now) ;p the Paris Grand Chess Tour ranking seems to count the Blitz event by tacking it on to the Rapid event, maybe it needs extra clarification whether our Blitz winner will be the overall tournament winner (Rapid+Blitz), or you will actually count the Blitz points separately. :)

OhioChessFan: <Annie> I get ya, but I also get your dislike for coin-toss bets. Is there really that much difference between the two? In both cases, people aren't truly trying to predict a chess result, but are hoping for some random run of luck.

Anyway, I appreciate the people who put in the effort to be the Bookie. All of them are site givers and not takers. If I retire, I will have the time to take a shot at it.

And one more whine. I had both the Daily Double and Pick 3 and didn't play them out of cowardice.

Annie K.: Well, in a coin-toss bet <everybody> would be just hoping for luck, so nobody's bets would serve any purpose. That's why I don't offer them.

But long-shot bettors in regular bets are contributing money to the economy most of the time. I figure they deserve their winnings on the rare occasions they do happen to hit a lucky guess, for this public service. That's a fair (as determined by natural statistics) price to keep some people motivated to provide us the opposition we need for good profits. ;)

<If I retire, I will have the time to take a shot at it.>

Oooh! When can we expect that? :)

OhioChessFan: <Annie The K: But long-shot bettors in regular bets are contributing money to the economy most of the time. >

Fair enough. Anyone who's had some business or economics schooling will recognize this as strangely reminiscient of the arguments for/against pure speculators in the stock market.

<Oooh! When can we expect that? :) >

Some Monday when I don't feel like going to work any more.

Jun-23-18  WinKing: <Annie K.:...the Paris Grand Chess Tour ranking seems to count the Blitz event by tacking it on to the Rapid event, maybe it needs extra clarification whether our Blitz winner will be the overall tournament winner (Rapid+Blitz), or you will actually count the Blitz points separately...>

<Annie K.> Rapid & Blitz are two separate things. The bet would have said 'overall winner' or 'Blitz & Rapid' winner. I don't think there is a problem there. I did the same thing for the Leuven, Belgium tournament & no one questioned it. I have done the same for this tournament. The bet I have <Paris Grand Chess Tour (Blitz) : Pick the Winner!> is just what it says - BLITZ.

Jun-23-18  WinKing: I thought about having an 'Overall' winner for these tournaments but decided on two separate bets instead. This way the betting members get 2 shots @ picking a winner.

Annie K.: <Ohio> looking forward to that. :D

<WinKing> Yeah, makes perfect sense, and besides, you know anything you decide is fine with me. What got me wondering was just that since chess24 (my favorite go-to site) doesn't provide separate results, this would actually mean more work for you. :s

Chessgames Bookie: I'm expecting some radical changes on the Leadreboard today.
Jun-24-18  sydbarrett: I finally finished taking my CFA exam yesterday lol. I was behind on the study so I really had no business playing ChessBookie at all, but I tried to fit some in anyway haha

I put all my money on Aronian. From Hell's heart... I stab thee...

If I could do it again, I would put the other $4000 I had all on my old trusty Karjakin. But again, I had no business spending any time on this anyway so I didn't think it through.

I'm sorry I betrayed you my Killer

Jun-24-18  morfishine: morfishine: <OhioCluelessFan> Gawd, what a cry-baby, its only a game, a wager-less game, just for fun, a diversion, an escape...

Got it?

Ok, class dismissed

*****

Jun-24-18  sydbarrett: Imagine if I was down 1000 to 8000 on the final day, and I win it all on one amazing bet?! heheheh

Syd you brilliant boy you turn it down and let others win

Jun-24-18  sydbarrett: so close. he TIED for first. bwahahaha
Jun-24-18  sydbarrett: wait one final game to the season left, and Caruana turned an endgame edge to a Naka edge and Naka wins it seems, and Naka broke the tie. My season went down to the finish line and I'm proud of it yeah
Jun-24-18  mike1: Congratulations to Annie K.
Jun-24-18  sydbarrett: Wow Annie won huh. GJ then. Never foresaw that
