  WannaBe: With 2 more rounds to go, here is a quick look at the matchups, with current standing position...

Anand (1) - Leko (8)
Aronian (4) - Ivanchuk (T5)
Morozevich (T5) - Topalov (T5)
Carlsen (2) - Svidler (3)

Leko (8) - Carlsen (2)
Svidler (3) - Morozevich (T5)
Topalov (T5) - Aronian (4)
Ivanchuk (T5) - Anand (1)

Anand may have the easiest path, he have 1/2 pt lead over Carlsen, and plays Leko with white, then faces Ivanchuk with black.

Carlsen may have to work hard to catch/pass Anand, faces Svidler and then Leko.

  Chessgames Bookie: <Mr. Bookie, for Linares-Morelia: Most Moves bet, if Ivanchuk have the most moves, will all bets be refunded? Or you'll pay the second "most" moves?> As explained on a previous page, if that should happen then all bets will be refunded for the "most moves" bet. There was also a chance that quinella bets would have to be refunded but that is now starting to look impossible.

<RonB52734: when does this leg/championship end?> We'll figure that out after Linares is over and make an official statement.

  WannaBe: ♔ !! Handi Capper's Corner!! ♔

Please note, I've decided, that it is really tough trying to differentiate what tournament was blitz/rapid and what wasn't.

So... I'm just gonna include all the information here...

Anand - Leko: Anand leads it with +18 -4 =36, when Anand have white, he is +9 -2 =18. Their earlier game in Mexico resulted in a victory for Anand: Leko vs Anand, 2007

Aronian - Ivanchuk: Ivanchuk have a lead of +8 -3 =4. When Aronian have white, he is +3 -3 =1 against Ivanchuk. Ivanchuk won in Mexico: Ivanchuk vs Aronian, 2007

Morozevich - Topalov: Topalov have a lead of +10 -8 =6, when Morozevich have white, he is +3 -5 =2. Topalov won their game in the earlier meeting: Topalov vs Morozevich, 2007

Carlsen - Svidler: Svidler is undefeated against Carlsen, going +3 -0 =3. The earliest meeting between the two, was the Carlsen-Svidler Match in 2006. Their earlier game ended in a draw: Svidler vs Carlsen, 2007

Mar-09-07  RonB52734: If lightning strikes and all 4 games today are decisive, I'm toast.

Last one until the next big tourney! Hope you had lots and lots of success in beating up the Bookie! =)

Leko-Carlsen: They have played twice, both times Carlsen was white, and both games ended in a draw, including the earlier Linares game: Carlsen vs Leko, 2007

Svidler-Morozevich: Svidler have an +6 -5 =8 lead, when Svidler have white, he is +5 -3 =3. Their earlier game in the tournament ended in a draw: Morozevich vs Svidler, 2007

Topalov-Aronian: Topalov leads it with +2 -1 =4, when Topalov is white, he is +2 -0 =1 against Aronian. The game in the first half of the rounament ended in a draw: Aronian vs Topalov, 2007

Ivanchuk-Anand: They've played each other a total of 92 times!! And Anand leads it with +23 -11 =58. When Ivanchuk have white, he is +7 -9 =26. The earlier game resulted in a draw: Anand vs Ivanchuk, 2007

  WannaBe: Latest numbers...

Svidler 435
Aronian 449
Anand 475
Carlsen 503
Leko 508
Ivanchuk 562
Morozevich 568
Topalov 595

Mar-09-07  Caissanist: Quite a lot of changes after the lucky 13th round of Linares. Congratulations to Timer for taking over first place.

Mar-09-07  Bob726: Timer appeared to have lost over 5,000 chessbucks, yet went from second place to first.
Mar-09-07  you vs yourself: With Linares finishing up, a ton of bets will be paid off and the standings could change again.

  Chessgames Bookie: One more bet has been added for tomorrow, the big question on everybody's mind, who will win the entire tournament? Of course Vishy is the broad favorite but speculators can bet on an unexpected outcome.

Linares-Morelia: Who will win? (Last round bet)

The betting options are:

» Anand will win alone
» Anand and Carlsen will tie
» Carlsen will win alone
» OTHER

Good luck!

  WannaBe: Current top 3 standing...

Anand 8 pts
Carlsen 7.5 pts
Svidler 7 pts

So, for 'OTHER' to occur, Anand would have to lose, Carlsen tie, and Svidler win.

Kinda long shot... =)

Mar-10-07  refutor: who picked "anand-carlsen" in the quinella? they're gonna make a bag of chessbucks
Mar-10-07  acirce: Well, I have Topalov-Carlsen. Close.. ;-)

I bet on both Anand and Carlsen for winners though.

  WannaBe: *UNOFFICIAL* move count, Linares-Morelia tournament!

Svidler 463
Aronian 468
Anand 506
Carlsen 555
Leko 561
Ivanchuk 593
Morozevich 596
Topalov 615

  Chessgames Bookie: Final tallies for the most-moves and fewest-moves wagers:

Topalov = 621
Morozevich = 600
Ivanchuk = 597
Leko = 565
Carlsen = 560
Anand = 509
Aronian = 473
Svidler = 469

So Topalov wins the Linares-Morelia: Rd 5: Most Moves and Svidler wins Linares-Morelia: Rd 5: Fewest Moves. Congratulations to the winners.

<WannaBe> Your counts are probably off by a little bit because you are overlooking the rules of the wager which state <For example, if the game ends on 51.Rd1+ then both players will have "51" added to their total.> Therefore by our rules, Black can get an 'extra move' in a sense, if the game ends when White makes a play.

  Chessgames Bookie: About the quinella, this is bound to confuse some people so I better explain it right now.

Anand won the tournament outright, and Morozevich/Carlsen are tied for 2nd place. (Note that we disregard the tournament's actual protocol for tiebreaks and only examine the points earned.)

That means both the Anand-Morozevich and Anand-Carlsen should pay. This is explained in the rules of the wager which predicted an almost identical situation: <(E.g., suppose Anand wins by a point, and both Topalov and Radjabov are half a point behind -- then both the Anand-Topalov and Anand-Radjabov quinellas will pay.)> We now have this exact situation, but with Carlsen & Morozevich sharing 2nd place, instead of Topalov & Radjabov.

Because TWO quinellas are paying off instead of one, the odds that you receive will be less than the originally posted odds.

From ChessBookie Game Help Page : <If there are two or more winning choices in an event (e.g. a tie for first place), all tickets for any winning player will be paid off. The total winning pool is split evenly among all winning players then those smaller pools are distributed to the winners normally. When this happens, the odds payed will be substantially worse than the final posted odds.>

  Chessgames Bookie: Trivia: at this point in the leg, my account has 80,454 chessbucks, earned entirely from the 5% juice.
Mar-10-07  barbababa: <Chessgames Bookie> <The total winning pool is split evenly among all winning players...> This sounds like everybody who is winning wins the same amount of money. Are you going to fix the winning distribution method in the future legs, so that it is equivalent to real money betting?

  chessgames.com: <This sounds like everybody who is winning wins the same amount of money.> You are misinterpreting. Where the rules says "among all players" it doesn't mean the players in the ChessBookie game, it refers to the the players in the tournament: Anand, Carlsen, Morozevich, etc. It would perhaps be better written as "among all winning betting lines."

In this case, the "win pool" was something like 17,000 chessbucks, so it becomes divided into two pools: 8500 for the Anand-Carlsen bettors, and 8500 for the Anand-Morozevich bettors. But since there were fewer Anand-Carlsen bettors they enjoyed higher odds than the Anand-Morozevich bettors.

Mar-10-07  barbababa: <chessgames.com> In real money betting the money would be distributed to all correct bets according to how much you bet. For example, 100 bet to Anand-Morozevich would win as much as 100 bet to Anand-Carlsen regardless of how much those two choices were bet on total.
Mar-10-07  barbababa: Interestingly, three of the last five in winter leg standings (<jokinas>, <TrueBlue> and <Holden>) started with 10000 chessbucks.
Mar-10-07  soughzin: I finally hit big but I've lost so much I'm only around the original 10k. When does the leg end by the way?

  Chessgames Bookie: <all> We are looking over the upcoming tournnament schedule and will make a statement regarding the exact ending date of the Championship Leg in the next day or two.

<barbababa> It may vary between different regions, but here in the USA parimutuel houses (mostly horse tracks) do it the same way the ChessBookie does it. We also discussed this with a chessgames member from the UK who assures us that this is the more common procedure with bookmakers, as otherwise betting on longshots would be even less desirable than it already is. Using this method, if a longshot unexpectedly ties with the favorite, the longshot betters still enjoy the larger odds (albeit not as large as if their pick won the event outright).

Mar-12-07  barbababa: <Chessgames Bookie> At least, Betfair.com paid to all correct Corus 2007 winner bets according to how much money was bet. If I remember correctly, the decimal odds were 2.9 to all Topalov, Aronian and Radjabov.

I also asked this from my friend, who is partly professional in sports betting and he said he had never heard of such a way to distribute the winning pool. Is it only used in horse race bets? How do you get two winners in a horse race?

Mar-12-07  brankat: <barbababa> <How do you get two winners in a horse race?>

1) When 2 horses hit the wire together, and even the photo-finish can't separate them, it's called "Dead-Heat". It is a fairly common thing in horse racing.

2) The betting we have been having here at CG.com via <Chessgames Bookie> feature, has certainly been a fun, and enjoyable experience. The final outcome, the standings, are first and foremost a result of bettors' skills and experience, which is always the case in games of strategy, including Chess. A bit of good luck helps, too. To the above, a given betting format is more or less irrelevant. I haven't heard many people, if any, complaining. There is no point in splitting hairs.
