Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Oct-28-06  GufeldStudent: Can we upload pgn files with our analysis? That would be so much easier than typing it out all the time.

Domdaniel: <GuefeldStudent> Ah, but the Grammar Wars of the recent past have been bitter and terrible things, with casualties on all sides. A short selection of incredibly cryptic and twisted utterances can be found at User: achieve, near the top of the bio.

As a separate issue, Monad and I tend to go cryptic out of sheer paranoia from time to time. It muddies the trail.

What trail? You mean we left a trail? We're doomed, inspissation or no inspissation...

Domdaniel: <GufeldStudent> re PGN, upload, download - in general, there are no special technical facilities for the game, other than those the site allows normally. (Check out Premium Member Help pages, etc, for details - you can also put questions to chessgames.com on their forum - click on the avatar on the main page, beside their answer to your query about GM advice).

The only normal upload mechanism I know of is the one that allows games to be added to the main database; games can also be downloaded as pgns.

As for our game, Monad (for example) sometimes puts his analysis in pgn form on his (off-site) domain. Check his forum for details.

I don't think there's any easy way to upload lines, etc. But you don't have to retype them every time - I keep a current word file of notes etc, and also save a new Fritz/Chessbase game every day, incorporating new analysis.

As I said before (and I don't even play either side of the Kan normally): I've already accumulated more material on this line than I have on variations I've been playing for 25 years.

Oct-28-06  RandomVisitor: Just thought I'd let you know that I am checking in periodically as I assemble some furniture here at home (why does everything come disassembled?).

At 15 minutes before "move time" I will be watching postings full time.

Domdaniel: Gotcha, RV. Talk to you in half an hour or so when (I presume) we'll try to figure out what to do next...

OhioChessFan: Dom, I don't see much to do here. I haven't found anyone who sees a bit of difference in Qf4/g5. No other move seems remotely close to that good. Maybe we could set up forums with the Ra4/Rf3 lines that we seem to be inevitably rushing toward.

  Domdaniel: Hi, gang. Gang? OK...

My suggestion:

Strategy Forum (Open Defence) and Devil's Advocate (YouRang) to continue as they are. Ditto RV and Rybka.

Move forums:

Even tho' it's faded away, we should have cover on 21.Qg5

And 21.Qf4 is the other serious move. Maybe we should split it in two - one person takes the main line with 22.Nxc6, and somebody else covers the alternative with 22.Qg3 -- any suggestions, hints, volunteers, etc?

Oct-28-06
Premium Chessgames Member
Domdaniel: <Ohio> Then take your pick - d'you want 21.Qg5, or either of the 21.Qf4 lines?
Oct-28-06
Premium Chessgames Member
OhioChessFan: I like the 2 fora for our 22nd move idea. With GMAN limited in his response, we need to take advantage of our analysis time. As for hosting, set me at the back of the line. I'll do it if you don't find enough volunteers.
Oct-28-06  jepflast: <Domdaniel>

I won't be able to participate in much discussion today, since I'm hosting a Halloween party, but my forum is still available, of course.

If you'd like to do anything special with it, let me know so I can adjust the diagram accordingly.

Domdaniel: So basically we want people for

(1) 21.Qf4 Ne5 22.Nxc6 etc

(2) 21.Qf4 Ne5 22.Qg3 etc

(3) 21.Qg5

Everything else seems pretty much ruled out. Any takers for any of these?

Ohio - if you're busy, maybe Qg5 would be workable - most of the analysis is already in, I think - you could just let it run itself. And I can post the final summary for you, if needs be... Up to you, natch.

Open Defence: k Boss.... strategy forum is up and running... 21Qg5 looks interesting is that already busted ?
Oct-28-06
Premium Chessgames Member
Domdaniel: <jepflast> - that's fine, we have 48 hours - can I put you down for one of the Qf4 subsections? Take yr pick.
Oct-28-06  GufeldStudent: I would be happy to analyze Qg5 or Qg3. I figure other people already know the Nxc6 lines really well, so I wouldn't be good for that.

I will need to look over all the Nxc6 analysis though in order to come to a conclusion about which is better.

Domdaniel: <Open Defence> 21.Qg5 may be busted according to the heavy gang - but it will still get votes, so we need to have analysis/space ready, I think.
Oct-28-06
Premium Chessgames Member
OhioChessFan: <Dom> I'll wait a few minutes and see. Looks like we're covered though.
Oct-28-06
Premium Chessgames Member
Domdaniel: <GufeldStudent> Welcome aboard. I suggest the Qg3 line - as you say, most people will probably concentrate on Nxc6, but this is a sort of 2-ply alternative plan that has already come up.

Have you a working forum in operation? You've seen how it works - when you pick a move, you then arrange your profile/biog to announce it, maybe add a FEN diagram, and off you go...

Oct-28-06  jepflast: <Domdaniel> I'll take the main line again, then. Qf4.
Oct-28-06
Premium Chessgames Member
OhioChessFan: Dom, maybe we could have jepflast with the main forum for Qf4. OpenD for Qg5. Gufey for Qf4/Qg3 and one more, maybe stevens, for Qf4/Nxc6
Oct-28-06
Premium Chessgames Member
  Domdaniel: Is this suggestion OK?

(1) jepflast - main line with 21.Qf4 Ne5 22.Nxc6

(2) GufeldStudent - alternative line with 21.Qf4 Ne5 22.Qg3

(3) 21.Qg5 - possibly <Ohio> if no other volunteer emerges...

And any other options that emerge on the main page can be tackled later...as necessary?

Oct-28-06  achieve: <Ah, but the Grammar Wars of the recent past have been bitter and terrible things, with casualties on all sides. A short selection of <incredibly cryptic and twisted utterances can be found at User: achieve, near the top of the bio.>

True, and I enjoyed your input!

But this is getting me in a defensive mood. I agree I suffer from that now and again but I'd appreciate not to be exposed.. I'll open up in time.. Pls hold back until then.. !!

If i'm getting this totally wrong pls let me know!

Kindest regards!

OhioChessFan: In your announcements of workshops, I would especially emphasize that people contribute to the Strategy and Devil's Advocate forums at this time. For once, I don't think we'll have much trouble finding an early consensus, and it would be good to take advantage of that time for analysis.
Oct-28-06
Premium Chessgames Member
Domdaniel: <jepflast> main line it is - thanks. Remember to mention that you're doing specifically 21.Qf4 Ne5 22.Nxc6 - and <GufeldStudent> is taking the 22.Qg3 line... cheers. Enjoy yr party.
