Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

I don't know if this counts as fun, but 2 years ago, my dentist won a statewide newspaper contest picking winners in the NCAA basketball tournament. Won $1000. Using the same sheet, he came in third in his office behind 2 of his dental assistants.

Domdaniel: <Ohio> - <mack> is covering 21...h5 and other such options... which probably won't amount to more than having the refutation handy.

If you like, I'll put you down for a 4th subvariation - all moves after 21...Ne5 apart from the 3 we've already got. Is there a point? I dunno, really.

I've got you as 1st Reserve right now, in case anyone drops out or something new turns up. Can you think of anything else?

Domdaniel: <Ohio> Those 'other' 22nd moves after ...Ne5 are probably worth doing. For example, 22.fxg6 might be an option. Not a good one, but that never stopped us before.

I'll put you down for 21...Ne5 22.Others - if that's OK. You might even suddenly find yourself in the middle of a brand new Steinitz-RookFile mainline...

Oct-30-06  Milo: Our worst ending nightmare:

click for larger view

There are a number of things which could make this a little better:

(1) Not having the pawn on f6.

(2) Having the pawns locked one square up the board.

(3) Rooks, because back rank threats could really cramp black's game.

(4) Other typical endgame advantages for white (centralized king, space advantage, etc.)

The first two points are the most important. We shouldn't allow black to lock the white pawn at d4 (if the DSBs are still on the board,) and we shouldn't play f6 unless we are confident in our ability to avoid rook trades.

Domdaniel: <Milo> I couldn't agree more about f6. Basically, we mustn't play it unless some very tangible advantage is offered. Like maybe Qg7 mate.

Any line where our attack peters out, and the f6 pawn can be surrounded and captured soon turns into a loss. This can apply in the middlegame with queens on, as well as the bishop ending.

In any case, simply leaving the pawn on f5 must be best, as long as black can only capture it by wrecking his pawn structure with ...gxf5.

Domdaniel: <milo> btw, I'm not really doing any analysis here at the moment - just trying to coordinate the forum system while <twinlark> is away. So ideas like yours might be better posted on the main page, or one of the forums. Thanks.
Oct-31-06  twinlark: Hi Dom

It's 1 Nov here and you haven't been sighted since 30 Oct.

I've only really had a chance to catch up with the main thread and it seems we have some ready made forums if GMAN plays Ne5, but it could be an <interesting> vote.

Could I prevail on you to organise the forums on the next move (more than that if you want, of course...) as the immediate time constraints are telling: I have a fair bit to catch up on still, nvmjm (excuse...but a large spider just surprised me by walking across my keyboard and has moved onto meaningfully trampling my printer...now it strolled across my chessboard and tried to climb my g pawn and has settled down next to the a Rook...how can you take a patzer like that seriously when it doesn't even know it's Black's move...)

anyway, The Move is now at 0600 my time at which time my Son the Younger will be waking us all to open his birthday presents...

I'll try and be online at 0500 AEDT (1800 GMT).

  Domdaniel: Welcome back, TL.
I was unexpectedly busy today. Should be back now for a while, though.

I didn't quite wreck the shop, though as you can see we've been running advance forums on 22.Nxc6/22.Qg3/etc.

I can carry on doing this, no probs - but I'll be busy again sporadically until I've cleared various nonchess deadlines, hurdles etc - which will be Weds afternoon GMT.

As long as the forum hosts are happy to continue, however, the basic set-up is already in place.

I bet your brain feels a whole lot better now. I'll report on sundry other developments when we're more alive.

Domdaniel: <forum hosts> as you see, twinlark is alive and well, but has asked me to carry the can a little longer.

Seeing that we've been clever enough to set everything up in advance, I suggest that the four of you already hosting lines after 21...Ne5 (jepflast, GufeldStudent, themadhair, and OhioChessFan) can just carry on as you are.

If anyone wants a break, let me know. Likewise if anybody can think of some other eventuality that we should cover.

Thanks, all.

Oct-31-06  twinlark: What sort of can are you carrying...is it something I really want to know about? Never mind, now that you're carrying the can, I'll just carry on with the can-can instead. Wheeee!

Domdaniel: Gotcha. See the magic post jump like a Mexican jumping bean...

If anyone's around, just shout. I'm popping in and out. Unless told otherwise, I'll assume the Devil's Advocate (YouRang) and Strategy Shop (OpenDefence) are both happy to continue. RV, of course, remains as computer wizard.

As for our 22nd move, I suggest the four existing forums can continue as they were:

<jepflast> with 22.Nxc6

<GufeldStudent> with 22.Qg3

<themadhair> with 22.Ne4 [though this is probably a non-runner now, no matter how mad you are...]

<Ohio> with '22. Others' - where 22.Rad1 already has some quick votes, for example.

We can juggle this later if necessary.
