   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Jul-10-07  WBP: <Dom> <Eyal> Check this out from the Timmerman game page:

<Red October: <freelance nuisance> correction <Domdaniel> will always be the freelance nuisance. speaking of which why ain't he here.. if he was I bet 1.f4 would be winning the vote...>

Haha!

Jul-10-07  Eyal: <Bill> I think it all started with the following post, during the Nickel game:

<Nov-03-06 Domdaniel: <Defi> Are you <Chief Troublemaker> already? Uh-oh, I knew you'd carve your way to the top of the hierarchy once you really got going...

I'll take Strategy back after a move or two, if that's okay with you. For now I'd just like to carry on with a sort of freelance nuisance role...> (Domdaniel chessforum)

And <Red October> is Deffi's new persona, if I'm not mistaken...

Jul-10-07  Eyal: <speaking of which why ain't he here.. if he was I bet 1.f4 would be winning the vote...> Though based on the games from the Irish championship, I would rather say 1.Nf3.

Domdaniel: <Eyal> 1.Nf3 indeed: maximum flexibility, decide later whether to transpose into a d4 variation or stick to Reti/English lines. Before this tournament, all 6 of the serious games I'd played as black since my 'return' last year had begun 1.e4, and I'd played the French. But here nobody played 1.e4 -- the single French actually began 1.d4 e6, at which point my opponent seemingly got worried by my earlier win with the Dutch and switched to 2.e4.

But that last round was almost a disaster. I wanted a win to get back to 50%. My German opponent also wanted a win. I was late again. I had to leave mid-game to check out of the hotel, a technical infraction of the rules which did not amuse my opponent. She complained. I had a won position, and 5 mins to make 20 moves. I made it, but could only draw. Strange game.

I feel psychologically crippled after just 9 days. Don't know how real players survive the strain.

Jul-10-07  Ragh: Dom is capable of championing the cause of neglected openings. Go DOM!
Jul-10-07  Eyal: In the "Battle of the Brains", 1.Nf3 actually managed to win the vote - in an open voting system - but that was with a relatively small group of people. With hundreds of people voting, and with e4 and d4 running ahead already with ca. 300 votes each, while no other move has more than 25, I'm afraid it's hopless. Anyway, as a d4 voter myself, I hope the Nf3 people will switch their vote to our camp at a certain stage...

<Dom> I've posted some comment on that game of yours from the final round in Bill's forum, btw - I think you had a won position until 40.Ne6+, though you might have made your life easier in the two previous moves as well. A pity, since you really deserved the full point - until that stage it was very well played.

Jul-10-07  Red October: yeah I hope so too.. in a way I feel bad as I want to play my favorite Ruy Lopez.. but I think 1.d4 might be better against GMT..

  jessicafischerqueen: <Mack> <Alexander>??

Was that <Pope> or <Magnus>?

I only ask because there is a fine game here in the database in which THE <Pope> plays THE <Magnus Dei>.

Some call it "The Pope's quarrel with God."

Others just call it what it actually is:

"A bloody travesty."

  jessicafischerqueen: From <Billy Connelly routine>:

<Billy> (in outrageous Scotch accent):

"Then I became Assistant Pope."

(later on, after he becomes "full Pope" he is accosted by a pillock in a bar)

<Billy>: "Screw me? I'm the POPE. Screw YOU."

heh

jessicafischerqueen: <Dominus Dominate> Well bloody good show turning up on the pitch for the <Irish Open>. I'm impressed. And a bloody queen sac to boot. Well done man. A bit previous that your won game was drawn solely because you had to check out of your hotel.

In <Canada>, where Chessplayers are paid millions, you would normally have had a <batman> to take care of such duties.

Now that you are back, are we going to lose you to the <Jan Timman Impersonater> game?

(He's not fooling anyone, you know).

I voted for <1.c4> or it might have been <1."Pass">, but I can't remember now. I'm on team "World" but only in a <salutary> sense. Or perhaps a <TITular sense>, in which case I'd be joined by <The Hunt for Red October>.

I hope <Deffi> will not be stalked on the <Timman Impersonator> page by some cad calling himself <"Hung" for Red October>.

YIKES!

Ok I'm very glad you are back.

DOMS AWAY!!!!
BOMBS AWAY!!!!

DOMS BACK!!
BOMB BACTRIA!!

Your humble servant,

Jul-11-07  Eyal: <Jan-11-07 jessicafischerqueen: <Eyal> Thanks for the very clever "Pope" poem. I'm assuming my previous post was deleted by chessgames.com because any form of the word <Billy Connely> uses in the final line of his hilarious stand-up routine about the Pope is not allowed in here?> (Domdaniel chessforum)

That was the same routine, wasn't it? Maybe they're becoming less vigilant here.

jessicafischerqueen: I think "screw you" is now allowed due to <Nako's> very fine film review of <Deja Vu>
Jul-11-07  Ragh: Here's a suitabtle "Incorrect opening" for this forum: <Damiano Defense>. Strategy is to drag the black king out to the 4th rank and mate (within 9 moves). L Holmberg vs O Hongset, 1962

<And here is some "existential humor" form <Chess Classics>. I can't stop laughing at this post and I can't really explain why. But <CC> now joins <Wilson> as a "two-timer" in my favorite kibbutz section:

<Chess Classics:>

<Well, here's a real "strange but true" fact: I just went outside for the first time in 3 days. I was out there for about 10 seconds, then I came back in. Isn't that something?

Regards,
CC>

Domdaniel: Thanks again, everyone, for the kibitzes, comments, support, analysis, etc. Now, before we consign the verdamt Irish championships to the dustbin of history, one more salient factoid:

Both of my draws were with women. This continues a trend that goes back a long way -- I've drawn with almost all of the reasonably strong female players I've met in tournaments. The sequence is now eight or ten draws long, and includes Irish women's olympiad players back to the 1970s.

Obviously I'm terrified of losing to the 'opposite' sex.

Any explanations spring to mind?

Jul-13-07  Ragh: <Obviously I'm terrified of losing to the 'opposite' sex.> And this terror brings out the best in you. Best enough to draw, courteous(?) enough not to push for win.

Open Defence: <Obviously I'm terrified of losing to the 'opposite' sex> maybe you watched the <Thomas Crown Affair> too many times..

btw that film was one of the reasons I took up chess....

WannaBe: Because you wanted to play chess against Steve Mc<Queen>? Speaking of McQueen, my knowledge of surname, tells me that Mc, or Mac, means 'the son of'.

So, one of McQueen's forefather would have been the first to be called as such, now, which Queen was his mother?! Enquiring minds want to know!

Domdaniel: <Wannabe> your information is correct: Mac/Mc means 'son of'. What this implies in the McQueen case, I have no idea.

Open Defence: somehow the remake of Thomas Crown Affair did not capture the essence of the original... the original was way better...

Domdaniel: I have to admit that I haven't knowingly seen either version of The Thomas Crown Affair. Not entirely, just a few fragments. Split screens and chess games and such.
