Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: Jess - before I forget - thanks for defending li'l Tom Cruise. You're right, he's something of a soft target at the moment, and it was a cheapo on my part.

Then again (yawn, here he goes again with those tiresome anecdotes) that one time I met Tom and Nicole Kidman together, Nic and I were about the same height, and enjoyed a very brief exchange at eye level, while Tom looked daggers at me from somewhere nearer the floor.

I'm really glad the scientologists hadn't taught him Ron's Special Death-Ray Glare back then. Or if they had, he was set to stun.

Still stunned.

  Domdaniel: <Jess> - <: <grinding away> Finally, an appropriate phrase suitable for <Valens> <Time> <Day>>

John Cooper Clarke puts it even better:

<In the pleasure domes and ersatz bodega bars of the free world the mechanics of love grind like organs of iron to a standstill.>

Mancunian accent required for max effect.

  jessicafischerqueen: LOL How Romantic!!

Almost as "Romantic" as this bit of absolute nonsense from <F. Schlegel> (not to be confused with his brother August, or his lesser known Jewish brother <Bagel>):

"Only in the lightning bolt of death does the purpose of existence become clear."

??????

Exsqueeze me? Baking Powder?

Domdaniel: <Notice>. <Prof Dr FischerQueen> (Dept of Verbal Fission) is conducting a bona fide scientific experiment with the full backing of this institution, Forum University College Kilimanjaro (we've moved up).

We are aware that scientific experiments occasionally result in shock, horror, destruction of habitat, and rendering vast swathes of the universe inhospitable to human life. But that's progress, innit.

We believe that saying "test, test" will have an apotropaic effect. But the hypothesis has not been properly tested at altitude yet.

- Will I jump now?

Domdaniel: I will have to think about this for, oh, at least 23 hours.

There's the semantic angle - <messages of a sexual nature, or that would be generally considered offensive> - um, I think not, General. Nobody here said 'kill', for example.

But we shall see. I don't much care for censorship, but I accept some norms for civilized restraint, and all that. But I also think that only tribal/racist abuse words are really nasty, and 'obscenity' is in the stout cortex of the observer.

I imagine <everything> here <could> be considered offensive, really.

Faculty members (of Unmentionable University) can vote, offer messages of recrimination and/or support, run away and hide, build nuclear shelters, revert to pre-experiment euphemisms, whatever. I'm listening.

Am I urinated off? Not really. And it's better than being urinated on.

Hey, the experiment had a result. Science has progressed. And Thor/Zeus exists and he doesn't like me.

I knew them lightning bolts was dangerous.

Oh, forceps and funicular frigidaires, and the French Defence. Ca y est.

Feb-14-07
Premium Chessgames Member
jessicafischerqueen: <Dom> That's a scary note you just left in my forum man. We can't have you shut down... Maybe just do what they say? They were pretty specific, they don't want explicitly sexual terms used. Well we never had any trouble in here before the <experiment>, and the <results> are certainly in? We were doing fine with Euphemisms for months on end, I don't think they care about that or they would have warned you earlier. They probably have a filter thingy for the explicit anatomical words, etc. etc.

I really doubt a member complained (see? i typed a euphemism right there).

They won't close your forum, they just want to you to delete the sex-related words, it sounds? Well we've already read all of them posts anyhoo, no? I feel responsible here man. I guess the <Valentine's Day> Defence won't hold. Didn't hold for <Bugs Moran's> Gang in Chicago either... Sigh. Whither love?

Free Dom!!
