Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

May-03-19  Boomie: <The French kiss of death.>

That's how e4 players feel when they see e6. Like bathing in ice water. I used to revel in foiling my opponents' strategies.

I had some nice wins with the French. Then expert Leo Stefurak became so unhinged that by the end of a 60 move game, he was standing on his chair staring down at the board. In his defense, that was the third round on Saturday in the rugged Swiss rules we used to play. But we were made of sterner stuff in those days. Leo is a remarkable man, btw. He's done a lot for NW chess in addition to his day job. Here is what he looked like when I played him. https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&sou...

I won't submit a best French game as I would not accept a preemie prize. I'm still protesting Rogoff, you see. Silently mostly.

<Tim> I don't think you read the directions properly either eh? <Matt> has not organized a premium membership for the whiner.

He has organized a <Swift Premium Ham> which he will mail to you, with the promise that it will arrive "in some sort of condition."

May-04-19  Boomie: <a <Swift Premium Ham>>

Well, I'm ham enough as it is, thank you.

May-04-19  mckmac: <Cormier> Sorry, but we're limiting the choice of game to the last year.

<So the dates are: 1/1/2018 - 7/5/2019.

Any French Defense. Transpositions included. Black victory.>

I really should have been clearer about all that. I hope you will consider submitting another game.

Check It Out: Aaaand, I nominate the Yip-Abrahamy game. You've got to love a French with sac-sac-check mate the white queen, all by move 15.
May-04-19  Boomie: <jessicafischerqueen: <Tim> Ham feeling that way myself.>

Too much sun here lately. How's your back bakin'?

HeMateMe: Nice to see Dom's forum still up. He's a good egg, his comments are missed.

The French D is a pain in the butt for white. I don't even play 1.e4 because so many people have memorized 20 move variations of the Ruy and Sicilian. I play Q pawn openings and get a quieter game.

May-04-19  Boomie: <I nominate the Yip-Abrahamy game>

Now all the candied hams are coming out of the woodwork.

This is your doing, Jessie. Make it right. By the way, I like your movies very much.

Check It Out: <Boomie: Make it right > Just to be clear, I'm not actually entering a "contest", and don't want to win a prize. I'm just having a little fun in <Domdaniel>'s memory, and highlighting some neat recent French games. Stick that in your candied ham.

OhioChessFan: You know, <Dom> had a bit of an unstructured view of life. I daresay I think he'd enjoy non-2018 entries in a 2018 contest. Maybe.
May-04-19  mckmac: <Check It Out> Bedankt. That's just what we are trying to do here.

OhioChessFan: Hmmm, <CIO> and I posted at the same time, and pretty similar thoughts at that.
May-04-19  mckmac: <OCF> I think you are right.

We'll have a side contest then for "Best All Time" and maybe see if we can't recruit some distinguished judges specifically for that. <Eyal> and <Honza> come to mind. Same rules. Prize to be announced.

May-04-19  Boomie: <I'm just having a little fun in <Domdaniel>'s memory>

My sediments exactly. This French thing follows my suggestion:

Domdaniel chessforum (kibitz #24568)

Dom loved playing with the language and self deprecating humor.

May-04-19  mckmac: <Boomie> Yes, I thought your idea back then would have struck a chord with our host. And of course <TP Star> laid down the template for a contest of this kind many years ago.
May-04-19  Alien Math: <best Black win of the last year in the French Defense> ah i kept on thinking i was going to learn enough of the <French Defense> so i could keep up with him, i'm probably going to have to take a pass on the contest and use it to view the games submitted or commented on, a chance to peer into <Domdaniel>'s world of chess
May-04-19  mckmac: <Alien Math> I'm sure many remember the conversations you had with Domdaniel and the rapport you shared.

So many good conversations. The man had a gift for friendship. He could always somehow find common ground that he liked and could speak to.

May-04-19  mckmac: ... though that was sometimes really really hard. So thanks for that Dom. I appreciate it.
May-04-19  mckmac: <Paris Attack> nominates a great win by Ding Liren over Kamsky from 2011. The pattern of piece and pawn play is like some elegant dance.

"Ask Not for Whom the Bell Dings"

Kamsky vs Ding Liren, 2011

May-04-19  mckmac: Just seeing where we are now:

<JFQ>:Fischer vs Tal, 1960

<Cormier>:G G Sagalchik vs Nakamura, 2003

<Paris Attack>:Kamsky vs Ding Liren, 2011

All in the running for "Best All Time". Maybe to be referred to as "The 🦇".

<Jess, OCF, Boomie> and esteemed members from <Scandanavia>, et al: What do you think?

All other games, unless otherwise excluded, are entered for "The Dom". Cup 🏆, tee shirt 👕 and ribbon 🎗️? (Suggestions please)
