 | | Richard Taylor: I just found that <Domdaniel> died. This gave me a shock. Very sad. He was very intelligent in both the maths side of things and puzzles, chess, and also the literary arts side. He was supportive of just about everyone on here. I haven't been on here that much. Dom was always very supportive of me. Then he seemed to stop communicating. It seems he was ill for some time. My regards to his family and my thoughts are with Dom who I never met but I valued. |

 | | Richard Taylor: I also like Pynchon although I haven't got far into 'Gravity's Rainbow' but did make a start on it (this year) as an old friend of mine and I often in talking get to Pynchon and discuss Pynchon, both liking 'The Crying of Lot 49' and 'V' but not graduating (in my case) to Dom's favourite (or one of them as he was obviously well read). What a bugger! I see he had preferred he had preceded his brother. A sad business: hard to imagine Dom not here. I didn't come here much but I was always aware of his observations and his kindness. |

 | | OhioChessFan: <mckmac: Why don't we just pretend you're still around?> I can't quite work myself up to that, but it does appeal to me. So I will just toss this out and maybe sorta, kinda, pretend that <Dom> is still out on that extended break from cg.c he had last year. Here goes. I am embarrassed to report on my dismal failure at bar trivia Tuesday night. The category was Author Link, and the question was: "What author wrote all of these: The Crying of Lot 49, Bleeding Edge, and Mason and Dixon". I didn't know. Nobody else on my team did, either. Nor did any of the other teams. So a couple minutes later, the host said, "Well, nobody got that, but maybe if I'd mentioned his best known book, Gravity's Rainbow..." at which point I groaned loudly, to the general amusement of most the place, and thought of how disappointed in me you'd be-and probably simultaneously amused at my expense. |
| Feb-23-19 | | Boomie: Perhaps we should post in the spirit of Dom. Although none of us can write as well, we can add posts about the French and add some good natured banter. I suspect that Dom would want us to continue to have fun here. |

 | | Richard Taylor: Coincidentally I had started reading Gravity's Rainbow. 'V' was another by Pynchon, and it is good. Hard to follow but I think that is the point, that there are many points. 'The Crying of Lot 49' is not too long it is a great book. I'm not sure who I prefer, Pynchon or Dellilo. Both are good. Pynchon wrote some huge books though... 49 has a lot of signification around the number 7 so maybe that is part of how Dom got onto it...and Pynchon as he liked lit. as well as puzzles and maths etc... Very intelligent man, and witty. |

 | | offramp: I like Thomas Pynchon’s <Flying Circus>. |
| Mar-05-19 | | zanzibar: Did Dom (Gerry) ever say how he selected, or otherwise came, up with his avatar? |
| Mar-05-19 | | mckmac: <Zanzibar> I remember him once saying it was a spur of the moment thing, but he also mentioned that given his limited eyesight, he thought it was a good choice. |
| Mar-05-19 | | zanzibar: Thanks <mckmac>. To tell the truth, I was never particularly fond of his avatar, but it was his choice after all. He could have done worst:

 | | OhioChessFan: I wish I could ask Dom for his opinion of Jack Reacher, and if he thinks Reacher is autistic. |
| May-03-19 | | mckmac: Looking at Domdaniel's player page, Gerry McCarthy, I see that he would have turned 61 on the 7th of this month. As a small way of noting this, I am inviting my fellow members to nominate the best Black win of the last year in the French Defense. To the winner of the popular vote goes one year preemie membership. I just checked the cookie jar and I can cover it.👀 |

 | | jessicafischerqueen:
Good idea <Matt>. I will vote for our World Champion going in for possibly the sharpest French line of all: A Giri vs Carlsen, 2018 It's not the exact same line as one of my favorite games of all, but it reminded me of it: Fischer vs Tal, 1960 I like to play this music whilst playing the moves in these games, though <Dom> may have favored <Viv Stanshall> or some such. He had his favorites, and they were never what "you'd expect." There wasn't much "you'd expect" from <Dom>. He was too lucid and free in his thinking to be predictable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXy... |

<Matt> good heavens I didn't read the directions properly- it was a black win you were after and I served up a draw. No burritos for me...
Happy birthday soon enough, <Dom>. |

 | | Diademas: Here is a nice one: K Alekseenko vs B Savchenko, 2018 Even involves a Queen sac! |
| May-03-19 | | mckmac: <Jess> Cheers. A Giri vs Carlsen, 2018 is a wonderful game. 14.0-0-0 had me almost spilling my coffee, but it's still theory!? Dom was always a stout defender of the *value* of the hard-fought draw so you have been awarded a Gold Star Certificate and consolation croissant. Please expect delivery forthwith. That game is also noteworthy for this memorable sequence of kibitzing banter... <gokusano>: They seem to transpose into humor their dislike for each other. The game later will be a carnage with neither as a decisive favorite. But I pick Magnus to win. <epistle>: Giri has the advantage because he is now raising a family. That provides extra motivation to win games <Check It Out>: Carlsen has the advantage because he now has a hot blonde for a girlfriend. That spurs a champion to be the best they can be. <Pulo y Gata>: The arbiter has the advantage because he is secretly making out with both the wife and the girlfriend. |
| May-03-19 | | Count Wedgemore: Great idea to have a 'Best of the French Defense' contest. What a nice way to honour the late and great <Domdaniel>. <Diademas>' pick was a good one. Hugely entertaining game. I nominate this game from Tata Steel:
Yifan Hou vs Mamedyarov, 2018 Mamedyarov is not a prolific French player, but in this game he shows that he knows how to handle this defense as well. Hou Yifan gets slowly, but surely, outplayed in the Winawer by Azerbaijan's no.1 player. |
| May-03-19 | | mckmac: <Diademas and Count Wedgemore> Thank you gentlemen for your nominations. You have got our contest off to a great start. Terrific to see Yifan Hou represented, despite her not coming out on top in this one. And a Queen sac by Boris Savchenko ... excellent!! |
| May-03-19 | | cormier: G G Sagalchik vs Nakamura, 2003 |
May-03-19
 | | OhioChessFan: I'll let someone else submit Vishy-Fab. I think <Dom> would have liked this effort by Meier, hightlighted by the Black King's efforts. Middle of the board, wildly exposed, but the key defender. N Nestorovic vs G Meier, 2018 |
May-03-19
 | | HeMateMe: All Zook Up!
Natalie Zhukova v. Harari, French advance, Isle of Man 2018. Unlucky fellow runs into a blonde buzz saw! <Z Harari vs N Zhukova, 2018> |

 | | OhioChessFan: <JFQ: <Matt> good heavens I didn't read the directions properly- it was a black win you were after and I served up a draw.> OCF: <tears of laughter> |
| May-03-19 | | Count Wedgemore: <OCF: I'll let someone else submit Vishy-Fab> I too was thinking about Caruana's impressive win over Anand from last year's Norway Chess. But that game, although transposed into a French, started out as a Petrov (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nxe5 d6), so I wasn't quite sure how eligible it was for inclusion. |
| May-03-19 | | mckmac: Oh my goodness - "wildly exposed" up against a "blonde buzz saw", could be very very nasty. Thankfully we have Bob Down the Occupational Health and Safety boffin hovering at all times. <OCF and HMM> Cheers and good luck to you both. Looking forward to playing through your games when I get home. |
| May-03-19 | | mckmac: <Count> That's a pertinent point. I would say that all transpositions are good, as long as they don't ask to use the bathroom. |
