   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

Domdaniel: Wesley is a man of his word. Once again, I am impressed by his willingness to stick to commitments.

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Jan-18-19  jith1207: "Stayman?" we pleaded, but he left anyway.

Rest in Peace, Dear Dom.

Jan-18-19  paavoh: Sorry to hear these sad news - always enjoyed his postings on CG.
Jan-18-19  achieve: Apologies Gerry, I hoped to see you in person in Amsterdam, never happened unfortunately, so all that is left is hoping here that you will rest in peace.

I feel I must thank Matthew a lot for informing me, and I will end by saying I will dearly miss you, as so many others have expressed before me.

Here with you, Niels

Jan-18-19  Dr Winston OBoogie: RIP Gerry. It's things like this that make me realise how short life truly is. You'll be sorely missed, a true gentleman and a very funny man. You always said kind things about me and for that I'm thankful. So sad :(
Jan-18-19  johnlspouge: Anyone whose profile says < Empathy is essential to any kind of intelligence worth having. > is worth remembering.

Rest easy, <Dom>.

Honza Cervenka: What a sad news... Rest in peace, dear friend.
Jan-18-19  morfishine: Not <Domdaniel>? This is a terrible loss. <Dom> never had a bad thing to say about anybody. He was always gracious and engaging. Its just unbelievable right now
Jan-18-19  Parachessus: Very sad. Will really miss his witty and level-headed commentary. A huge loss to the institutional memory of our chess community.

Check It Out: It's quite amazing the connections we make with others who we have never met in person. I rarely interacted with <Domdaniel > on CG, yet I feel such a loss. I always enjoyed his humorous, witty, playful posts. He enjoyed word play, bird prey, pay dirt, gray beard, prayer dirge, say nerd...

OhioChessFan: Dom was one of the two funniest posters on this site. Never won a Caissar for it, to my eternal bewilderment.

Check It Out: I tried to add him to funniest just now but the Caisser system won't accept it even though the deadline is tomorrow.

Perhaps a posthumous award is in order to go with the Caissars this year.

OhioChessFan: Ok, I got him nominated.
Jan-19-19  virginmind: Sorry to hear this, RIP <Domdaniel>...
Jan-19-19  thegoodanarchist: This is gut wrenching news. The man was great, he was a stalwart of this website. He was erudite, friendly, and knowledgeable about chess (and more)>

Truly a great loss for cg.com and for his loved ones IRL.

I'm just sick.

Jan-19-19  SugarDom: RIP Domdaniel.

The guy never said an unfriendly word to me.

Jan-20-19  7krzem7: Fin de partie. Goodnight, sweet prince.
Jan-21-19  Paint My Dragon: Erudite, witty, friendly ... and he played chess. What's not to admire.

Rest In Peace.

Feb-16-19  Dr Winston OBoogie: Did Dom have cancer then? It's just he went AWOL for over 6 months but when he came back he seemed in fine form? I left a message of condolence the day I heard he'd died and it says any donations give to some cancer research place. I just watched an episode of Blackadder so I got to thinking about Dom (He loved Blackadder!) and wished I'd have talked to him more often. One of the most interesting men I've <never> met. I hope everyone remembers Gerry, he deserves to have those crony awards named after him in my opinion.

RIP Dom. X

Feb-17-19  mckmac: <Dom> I want you to know that you are missed here. Badly. But seeing your avatar today got me thinking. Why don't we just pretend you're still around? I mean, who's to say you're not still with us, maybe somewhere out there in the stardust, working on the French, and polishing up those puns.

This one is for you, Dom.

<Dom> I shall never forget you, for your many kindnesses and the example you set for me and so many others.

I'm a better person for having met you. Frequently I repeat one of your sagest dicta, especially when I feel the urge to fight with someone over something or other.

"It's almost never time to get excited about anything" you said. Too true, and too rarely followed.

And you said so much more. I hope you are interviewing Leni Riefenstahl and F.W. Murnau in the sky. What questions you might have asked them, given the chance.

Thanks to our mutual friend <mckmac> for lending me the courage to mourn you properly.
