chancho: From the Veselin Topalov page.

<percyblakeney>'s explanation for <bufon> getting banned.

Nov-10-06
<percyblakeney>: <Bufon>'s downfall was his going all in with his dozen accounts on 22. Nxc6 in Chessgames Challenge, but at least it was the right move :-)>

Mar-20-07  Towershield: From the Magnus Carlsen page:

azaris: Great People in the History of The World
by slomarko

"Marco Polo travelled the Silk Route to China. Good for him, but it's a pretty big place so how hard can it be to find anyway? Besides, other people had done it before him."

"Charles Darwin formulated the theory of evolution. However, it's just a theory. There are opinions that the world was created by intelligent design."

"Alexander the Great conquered the Persian Empire. His opponents were pretty weak. Someone like Hannibal could easily have done the same if he'd received similar resources."

"William Shakespeare wrote some plays. Whatever."

Mar-24-07  TheBB: From the team white BotB page ... I guess this doesn't divulge any critical info, so it'll go just fine. :)

<c o r e:>

Yeah. The opposite post seems unlikely.

:::Sorry everybody, I missed last move because I was busy UNpacking my things after I cancelled my trip to Brazil. I told them I was too busy with this game of chess to go to the silly Copacabana and lay on the beach with the largest population of perfect females (plastic surgery addicts) on the planet. They may be goddesses carved from stone at the border of the ocean and the world's most beautiful forest, but I have a queen of my own here with you guys, and a different kind of border dispute!:::

Apr-01-07  whatthefat: From <acirce> at Vasily Smyslov on Mar-31-07

"<If I write "goaijiopwjae," that is not a misspelled word; it is simply not a word to begin with. It's staggering that you fail to see the difference. So if you try to argue that "aggressivity" is in the same category as "goaijiopwjae," then it does not constitute a misspelling.>

Gooaijd pwjoaeint."

  TheAlchemist: From Boris Spassky:

<Jaymthetactician>: <Snoopdog>: Fischer would be 2900 due to inflation and Spassky's 2800 about. Inflation has caused that not Spassky performing badly :-).

Is this true? I dont think theres a rating inflation, it's just that today's players are much stronger then the past. Evidenced by how the further back in time you go, the lower the world champion is rated. For example: If Botvinnik was 2500 later on, then Alekhine would only be rated around 2000 nowaday's, with Steinitz being about 1800, and Morphy being around 1500, Anderssen I think would 1300, while Philidor might be 1250.

...

<azaris>: If Philidor was put in a time machine and sent to our time, he would be a strong IM.

If <jaymthetactician> was put in a time machine and sent to Philidor's time, it would be a blessing to us all.

Apr-05-07  Eyal: From Vladimir Kramnik:

<(Apr-01-07) thathwamasi: Congrats for such a dominant performance at Amber. Shortly Danialov might bring out an allegation, saying Kramnik was the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks as his blindfold score was 9/11>

WannaBe: From K Urban vs Naiditsch, 2007

< technical draw: I think Urban will become a legend. >

Apr-05-07  percyblakeney: ...or maybe he will become a Cowboy
Apr-05-07  Knightlord: < Eyal: From Vladimir Kramnik: <(Apr-01-07) thathwamasi: Congrats for such a dominant performance at Amber. Shortly Danialov might bring out an allegation, saying Kramnik was the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks as his blindfold score was 9/11>> So you're saying Kramnik didn't see the towers because of his blindfold?
Apr-05-07  acirce: Kramnik certainly terrorized the field.
Apr-08-07  WBP: <MQ> I have just wasted two hours of an Easter Sunday morning reading every page of this site--and laughing my butt off in the process. This stuff is hilarious.

But more than that, I honestly believe that this forum serves a somewhat valuable purpose for chessgames.com. It acts as a kind of a repository for our id, for all the aggressive, sarcastic, and even sadistic elements--I'm willing to admit to a certain sadistic pleasure in reading these posts--that we, as chessplayers, all naturally possess. I know many disapprove of the negative nature of many of these posts--and I think that they are correct in doing so. But this stuff is bound to erupt on a site like this (chess is, after all, a kind of intellectual aggression), and this forum provides a good safety valve of sorts.

  chancho: Blast From The Past.

<hayton3: It is cruel to give AJ any hope or encouragement with regard to his journalistic aspirations. It would take a lightning bolt to transform this character into passable journalistic material. Unfortunately after such a heavenly intervention the task would be even more futile.>

Apr-09-07  WBP: <I'm willing to admit to a certain sadistic pleasure in reading these posts> I meant perverse pleasure!
Apr-12-07  Tomlinsky: The imagery of this one almost burst a vessel here...

Kibitzer's Café - Apr-12-07Apr-12-07

Dr.Lecter: Wouldn't it be great if people taught chess as a part of the curriculum at schools?

JointheArmy: This one is a classic.

Christmas Eve 2005 Garry Kasparov Page

square dance: <I hope you know that's just ridiculous. However, just the skills it takes to score and to pass the ball in soccer is more than every skill required from players in football combined.> you're an idiot. <Any one whose sole occupation is swinging a bat and cannot hit a curve ball has less talent than a chimp.> you're an idiot.

<Coordinate your whole body for what? The only team sport that can compete with soccer in coordination is hockey, football requires as much coordination as urinating. In soccer you don't just use your feet, you must use and coordinate your whole body you just can't touch the ball with your arms and hands (if you leave out the goalie)> you're an idiot.

<There is nothing extraordinary about the control required to play baseball or football.> you're an idiot.

<Baseball requires no strategy at all. But you are right, football requires a lot of strategical planning from the coach, which I guess could make up for the lack of skills that is required from the players.> you're an idiot.

TheAlchemist: I know this wasn't part of the debate, but 90% of the world would choose the "original" football over its American counterpart anyday and same goes with baseball.
Apr-15-07  Plato: <farrooj: User: JointheArmy

See the posts from the 14th and then <Plato>'s post on the 15th>

If you'll indulge me, I'll post it here (edited for conciseness)...

<Feb-14-07 JointheArmy: I never knew you were so experienced in the Navy! I'm proud of you even though I don't even know you.... would you accept a premium membership courtesy of me?>

<Feb-14-07 <Whitehat1963>: Wow! Thanks! I'd be very honored.>

<Feb-14-07 JointheArmy: Thanks for accepting!... BTW, it'd be useful if you had some sort of military avatar to go along with my Texas one. Haha jk. Get whatever one you want... Give me your email so I can send you the Chessgames Activation Code.>

<Feb-15-07 Plato: <JTA> I just remembered ... I was in the U.S. Navy, too, where I received three purple hearts and lots of other medals (can't remember the names right now). I'm also a staunch Republican and I think Texas is the greatest state ever, and I just decided to convert to Christianity (not Catholicism, of course). I just remembered that my birthday is coming up, too. Hey, how about that new Metallica song? They rock! Family Guy such a great show. I'm a family guy myself. I live for my family, only I wish that I could provide my son with at least one premium membership to chessgames.com ... Poor little Christopher, only six years old. Just the other day he told me, with tears in his eyes, "It's okay, dad, I don't need a premium membership. I'll just play with my teddy bear like my friend Ilya Nyzhnyk." But I could see how much it pained him...>

Apr-15-07  Plato: <JTA> No offense, I hope. As you know, I was just kidding around ;-)

* I should note that <JTA> generously offered to buy me a premium membership after that!

chancho: Hilarious stuff from <strifeknots> profile:

<strifeknot>: Oh, those Topaphiles are hee-LAH-rious.

<Kapablanca>: The russians want to take revange. That is what's all about. They want to "deep toilet" Topalov, any way they could. "From Russia with revange". We all know about it. They were not able to save that submarine crew _what was its name, "Kurks?"_ but they think they are able to sunk anyone they want and they have the machinery for it. But I bet for Topa been unsunkable. They, the russian, do not have nothing to prove about a "fraudulent" Topalov. Topalov is a serious menace for the russian chess world championship monopoly, and will be for so long.

"Remember the Elissa Toilet allegations, Bulgarians". Why not? Could be.

What the russian chess KGB really wants? Psicologically "poloniumized" the morality of their bulgarian counterpart?

Could be.

<strifeknot>: Could be you're completely bonkers.

Apr-15-07  Archives: This guys first post... (from Shulman vs World page)

<<potomskazu>You people are blind! If you can not beat jewish-belorussian-american grandmaster when whom can you beat. I am unrated player but i have beaten Yermo.Grandmasters are no good in trading stocks .Most of them can not even play chess. Here is the main line 27. e4(most active move restricting black rook moves for at least one move!) After e4 white have an advantage! 27...Queen g4 . Why ?A trap if 28 pawn takes pawn on d5 then 28..bishop e2 with a most powerful win !!!! So coreect is 28 rook e1 28...Q g5 29 King h1 (bishop should not be pinned) 29...rook f4 ,30 rook e3 .

As you can see black have some disadvantage due to inabilty of their bishop and knight to move. These two pieces are no binding or clamping much !!! Black have a very interesting draw if they play 2800 fide level>

Apr-24-07  Archives: Some classic LMAJ...

<In fact, am I the ONLY player on this site to have his pages locked? (Maybe a lawsuit based on discrimination is in order here.)>

Apr-27-07  Archives: From page 3 of Nimzowitsch vs Systemsson, 1927

Funny stuff!

<1.f4 would have been a much better first move and would have deserved a !!, not merely a ! which seems all too prevalent in this game, truly great games a marked by at least one !!. More important than overprotection is Nimzowitsch's concept of implied development clearly demonstrated by 6.h6! (notice no !!). As development is implied, it cannot be directly discussed but instead can only be comprehended through osmosis and other forms of mental absorption. Thank you Chessgames, armed with this oldfound knowledge I am off to challenge Kasparov (well I guess I'll have to settle for Anand since Kasparov retired to avoid playing me)>
