Memorable CG Kibitzers' Quotes

Kibitzer's Corner
< Earlier Kibitzing  · PAGE 15 OF 55 ·  Later Kibitzing>
Jul-07-07  Tactic101: This little joke on the kibitzer's cafe is hilarious. Hilarious comment by <gangstaman>. <<yavuz1990: I am playing an e-mail game and I need help please. After 1.d4 d5 2.Bg5 h6 3.Bh4 g5 4.Bg3 Bg7 5.Nf3 Nf6 6.e3 Bf5 7.Bd3 Bxd3 8.Qxd3 e6 9.Qb5+ Nbd7 10.Qxb7 0-0,

WannaBe: <yavuz1990> As a rule, we do not give advice on games in progress.

ganstaman: WannaBe: <yavuz1990>> As a rule, we do not give advice on games in progress.> Oh, but how can we resist? :(All I'll say is that 11. Qxc7 may or may not be a legal move, and it may or may not actually win a pawn if it is indeed legal, and it may or may not lead to a better position for white if it is legal regardless of whether or not it wins a pawn as compared to the position prior to the legal or not legal taking but winning or not winning of the pawn.>

<<tactic>, my arch nemesis. I realize there are no "rules" in Chess (except for the actual rules), >>

Jul-09-07  azaris: On the GMT game after two pages of Themofro's cut-and-pasted Bird Opening (1.f4) analysis:

<acirce: Great! Now that we all agree that 1.f4 sucks, we can move on.>

Jul-10-07  Eyal: The ongoing debate (and/or bickering) over the opening move in the GMT game is certain to produce - if nothing else - a lot of memorable quotes... here's another one:

<azaris: Why did the voting open so early? 20 days of bickering about 1.d4 vs. 1.e4 is sure to kill the team spirit and morale. It's just stupid and unproductive.>

<kellmano: <azaris> It only has to turn into an argument if we let it. I would enjoy a good-humoured debate about the merits of 1.e4 or 1.d4. It is The World's fault if it turns nasty!>

<azaris: Yes, and I would enjoy a good-humoured debate about abortion, American foreign policy, God, and the Nazis. Unfortunately that's unlikely to happen.>

Jul-12-07  Tomlinsky: An instant classic:

the bad bishop: <TaxiDriver> your profile says you enjoy chess because it merges logic with creativity. Unfortunately, the first characteristic seems to be absent from your post which meanders between the obtuse and the meaningless - although I will concede it is "creative". In my post I stated to <rookfile> that <you don't seem to have any real basis for concluding Fischer was <nice> just as I have little to contradict you>.

Hence I did not, as you assert, purport to <judge whether a said person is nice or not>.

If you don't like my comments I have no problem with that - just tell me. But, please, don't quote Clint Eastwood movies! I love Dirty Harry but I really don't find any of his comments insightful enough to commit them to memory - aside perhaps from "c'mon punk - make my day".

Hows this - Bobby was a great guy and the best chess player of all time - end of story. The weight of your "argument" has simply overpowered me.

<whiteshark: My favourite chessbook:

Aaron Nimzowitsch's plumbing classic, <My Cistern>>

Jul-20-07  NakoSonorense: I don't know if this has been quoted in the past, but if not, it should definitely be here:

from Chessmaster (Computer)

<Zeratul1979> so i think we can safely say that a person is 400 or more ELO points stronger in CM than in real life? (what is real life anyways) :P

<LIFE Master AJ> Hmmm. CM is rated around 2700 by SSDF and CETG. Anyone who is rated 400+ better than that ...

<Jim Bartle> I think what Zeratul meant was that a player's rating tends to be much stronger, in theory, when playing computers such as CM than while playing other humans. I don't think he meant to say "400 points stronger than CM." Or maybe not.

<ganstaman> I think we might have reading comprehension issues. Allow me to quote: "stronger IN cm" (emphasis and de-emphasis added by me). Not "stronger THAN cm," but "in." Hope this clears up any confusion we've had.

<LIFE Master AJ> I know how to read.

An English Professor at the University of New Mexico, (Albuquerque - I was stationed at Kirtland A.F.B. for about 5 1/2 years) told me that if someone reads something ... and gets any meaning other than the one that the writer intended ... it is solely the fault of the author.

<Jim Bartle> Now, AJ, seriously, that's not true. Your professor must have meant it in a more specific way--that once a piece of literature is published, it exists and can be interpreted by each reader, that the author can no longer claim, "No, it means only this." If I write that 1. f4 e6 2. g4 Qh4 is mate and you understand it is not mate, that's your fault, not mine.

You misread zerutal's post. We all do that every so often. Most of us just admit it and move on.

<LoFarkas> Touche.

<LIFE Master AJ> <Jim Bartle> Nope. I know what I said. (and) I didn't misread anything.

<LIFE Master AJ> <Jim Bartle> Its also obvious (to me) that you only intend to aggravate or try to start another flame-war, (this is not your first offense, in fact you have had dozens); so as soon as I write this, I shall make a slot available for you on my ignore list.

<technical draw> <Jim Bartle> Bienvenido al club de los ignorados.

<chancho> El LIFE Master AJ es un verdadero pendejo. lol

Aug-09-07  Tactic101: This poem was posted on my forum by Chess Classics:

< Chess Classics: Ode to my number of forumpages, or lack thereof

I used to be number four
But now I'm quite poor
In terms of my pages
It has been some ages
Since I was near the top

I guess I musta flopped!
Can't compete with the spammers
So now I'm beggining to stammer
At the thought
That they have bought
The number one through seven spoooots!

Luckily for me...
Good ole' CeeGee...
Has kindly taken away
The thing that made me pay
The list of most popular Forums!

And now I'm a happy guy
The happiness money can't buy
To being on the brink of defeat
And then escaping-what a feat!
And so nobody knows who has the most
Now we're all just going to boast
About our number of pages
And since I had a lot of those? It's been ages.

Thank you! Thank you! *Bows*

Regards,
CC>

Aug-11-07  TheBB: From Chessgames Challenge: The World vs G Timmerman, 2007

<granyid> is there any good reason why we delayed Bg2? if not well I am Bg2 for the record.

<Gypsy> Well, there was a pawn at g2 til very recently ...

<Archives> That's a pretty lame excuse. We should have moved the Bishop to g2 at least 3 moves ago.

(After the moves 1. d4 f5 2. g2 Nf6)

Aug-15-07  TheBB: <Timex> Van Wely is doing good after all these disasterous results!

<plang> This summer he had a very successful result at Aeroswit and -2 at Biel is hardly "disasterous".

<JointheArmy> ^Distastrous isn't spelt with an "e".

<Marvol> Nor is it with two t's :P

<brankat> A tough word to spell, that's why I prefer "catastrophic" :-)

<JointheArmy> <Marvol> LOL - That's Karma?

<plang> In my dictionary <"disasterous".> means "even worse than disasterous".

<brankat> The same as "disasterous-er".

<WannaBe> The way I play, I am disasterous-est!

Whitehat1963's comment on Vidmar-Marozcy, 1932 game.

<Mameluk>: This tournament [Czech Coal Carlsbad Tournament (2007) note from the author] starts off with a bang. I heard Kirsan tries to quickly find a way to involve Laznicka into Mexico somehow.

<slomarko>: well i wouldn't mind Laznicka replacing Gelfand or Svidler.

<Resignation Trap>: Here's what Gelfand and Svidler think about slomarko's suggestion to replace them: http://www.coruschess.com/year/2006... and http://chesstigers.de/bilder/rosa/T... .

YouRang: Proposed rewording :-)

<Eight players compete in Mexico City for the very temporary world title. The players are: Anand, Svidler, Morozevich, Leko, Gelfand, Aronian, Grischuk, and Kramnik. The winner will subsequently play a match against Kramnik in order to KEEP the title, unless Kramnik wins the tournament, in which case he shall not be forced to play with himself (but maybe he'll play Topalov...). Confusion forum now open.>>

Who wants to see Kramnik playing with himself?

Stonehenge: <Who wants to see Kramnik playing with himself?>

That depends on his piece development.

Sep-13-07  Silverstrike: I found this on User: Ezzy's profile.

<During the Topalov v Kramnik World Championship match <DCP23: Topalov sacrificed two games for the initiative> lol. Great quote, One of the best I have heard so far. :-)>

Sep-20-07  YouRang: From the tournament page for: FIDE World Championship Tournament (2007) on Sep-09-07...

<cotdt: Draw Official.>

NOTE: At the time, the only active game from this tournament was Gelfand-Morozevich.

<michiganling: <cotdt: Draw Official.> I noticed yesterday that you'd called the Gelfand/Aronian game a draw when it was clearly still going. Is there something with your broadcast source that keeps stating results before any result has occurred?>

NOTE: <michiganling> was giving <cotdt> the benefit of the doubt, but the Gelfand game really was still going (it eventually ended with Gelfand winning). Apparently, <cotdt> thinks it's funny to post misleading information...

<cotdt:><I was refering to the Leko-Anand game, not the Gelfand game.>

NOTE: Leko-Anand had ended hours ago.

Shortly after, the following exchange appeared in three consecutive posts:

<acirce: Anand lost. >

<cotdt: <acirce: Anand lost.> No he didn't... it was a draw. >

<acirce: I was referring to the match against Kasparov. >

LOL! I'm still trying to figure out how <acirce> coerced <cotdt> to read that script!

Sep-20-07  YouRang: Oops - error on date above: It was Sep 19, not Sep 09.
Sep-21-07  TheBB: <acirce>: I hear that the Zappa team is accusing Rybka of going to the toilet to use Kramnik.
Sep-23-07  hitman84: FIDE World Championship Tournament (2007)

<Technical Draw: Also I agree with Eggman about Flohr. Once Flohr was in a tournament and won 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. I don't know how he did that but that was what the elevator operator was saying as they were going to the tournament room. "1st Flohr, 2nd Flohr, 3rd Flohr. Strange....>

Sep-23-07  sneaky pete: <I don't know how he did it> The story is a bit different. In the Hastings 1934/5 tournament, after the penultimate round Thomas was leading 6,5 ahead of Euwe 6 and Flohr 5,5. Thomas unexpectedly lost against Michell and Euwe had to concede a draw against tailender Norman, so Flohr winning his last game unexpectedly shared first place. When F. arrived at his hotel afterwards, the elevator operator, who knew F. had a room on the third floor, asked "Third floor?", to which came the indignant reply "First, second and third Flohr!"
Sep-28-07  Tactic101: Here's a hilarious exchange in the cafe:

<<JoeWms: <HFlew: Are all of us kibitzers part of some really big chess game?> Not possible, Heather. You can't play chess when all the pieces are Kings and Queens.

technical draw: <JoeWms> Now, Now, Joe. Tell the truth. You know there's only one King here. (Don't know how many Queens though)....

sanyas: We are all Pawns in the hands of Fate.

NakoSonorense: Good, cuz if you were in my hands, I'd sacrifice you all.

WannaBe: <technical draw> There's only one Queens, and it's in New York.>>

Sep-28-07  Tactics0: Here's something that was in the Alchemist's bio:
<Welcome!

Thank you and have a nice day!>

Sep-28-07  Tactics0: From the Kibitzer's Cafe:
<<Nakosonorense>: Kasparov arrested! Let's hope he follows Bloodgood's steps and starts playing correspondence chess from prison.>

<<Knight13>: And hopefully he’ll break out>
