 | | chancho: A kibitzer's desire to fist fight with famous chess players: <sleepkid: you didn't see the headlines? "Mad Scotsman in kilt punches Fischer in nose, then mysteriously vanishes into a crowd of Japanese"?
Couldn't be bothered. He was actually incarcerated a mere 30 minute train ride from where I live, but figured it was a waste of time to go up there to see him. He doesn't play chess anymore, and he's pretty much a raving nutter and a useless human being now, so I figured, why bother? He doesn't rate at all on my list of people I'd like to meet. In fact, I think he's actually quite high on my list of people I'd never like to meet. ...but if I bumped into him on the street by chance... yeah, sure, I'd punch him in the nose. Just for the sake of it. How about you? What famous chess players would you like to challenge to fisticuffs? (now this is a question that is both relevant and fairly interesting!) Just for the pleasure of a good brawl I'd have fought Blackburne 'cause he seems like a cantankerous old git who would be up for a fight. (didn't he supposedly throw Steinitz out a window?) And club foot or no, I would have enjoyed smacking that pompous prick Tarrasch around as well. Kramnik is pretty tall isn't he? So he's got a pretty good reach, but he looks like he'd crumble pretty quick. ...but Fischer... yeah, he's at the top of my list. (and don't no one give me that Fischer is a black belt in judo crap either. doesn't matter one whit. I'd still beat holy tar out of him.)> |

 | | chancho: A discussion about Sam Sloan in the Zsuzsa Polgar: page. <Ed Trice: There is a perfect solution to the Sam Sloan nonsense.
What we need to do is take up a collection, and build this great big floating city. We need to put Sam Sloan in the Sam Sloan Floating City of Excellence. The city will have many buildings, all built with mirrors. That way, wherever Sam Sloan walks, he can see Sam Sloan, the most important man to have ever lived. There will be 320 radio stations, all broadcasting Sam Sloan speeches 24 hours per day. Every TV station, Sam Sloan will be on, giving a speech, or in a debate with his unseen debating opponent, or perhaps even a cardboard cutout... of himself... of course! He will win every debate. Every 15 seconds, an "applause tract" will play so he can hear his adoring fans. He can point his fingers emphatically to the camera, to stress his absurb points. He can watch himself on the various studio monitors, so he can see all of his own profound actions. Later, he can watch himself on every channel, using the Sloan OnDemand feature to replay the relevant portions of his broadcasts (which is every moment of them, of course.) The courts will be packed with officials preparing for the next Pro Se Sam Sloan dockets... <Sam Sloan vs. The DNA Molecule> (suing it for unauthorized replication.) <Sam Sloan vs. Oxygen> (suing for incursion into Nitrogen's domination of the atmosphere.) <Sam Sloan vs. Ice> (suing for freezing at 32 degree Fahrenheit, an inconvenient temperature.) <Sam Sloan vs. Gravity> (suing for "holding him back") <Sam Sloan vs. Sam Sloan> (suing self for not suing himself sooner!) Sam will walk away from each deposition, each witness cross-examination, a much better man. A man of fulfillment. A man of passion. A man who has finally achieved his purpose. No! Wait!
He has not finally achieved his purpose!
So, he files another case. Sam Sloan vs. God.
He looks around. Where does he mail it to have God served? He does not know, so it is your fault. Sam Sloan next prepares to sue you, for not disclosing to him God's address... Ahhh, Sam Sloanworld. A perfect place to be... or not to be... that is the question. Oct-12-07

The most hilarious thing is that Silvio Danailov is appealing to Vladimir Kramnik. Wonderful! <Jim Bartle, Jan-20-08>: My first reaction in this situation would be "Doesn't want to shake hands? OK, I'll crush him." Second reaction: "Now how the heck can I possibly do that?" <alexmagnus, Jan-20-08>: So the opening <Chess Game Declined> gets a new variation: <Cheparinov Gambit> |

 | | TheAlchemist: <IMlday, Jan-20-08, Nigel Short >: Bowing would be more sanitary than hand-shaking which after all is a custom predating the discovery of bacteria. Holding up one's palm and saying "How" also shows no hidden weapons. Anyway, I sure FIDE allows cultural variations, eg (from wiki): In American culture, there is a "Soul Brother Handshake," also called a "Power" or "Unity" shake, dating to the 1960s, begun among African-American men, and still widely practiced between men of various races and particularly among teenage boys as a gesture of close friendship. This is usually a three move procedure, beginning with a traditional, palm-to-palm clasp, followed in quick succession by a clasping at the hilt of the thumbs, and finally, by a hooked clasp of only the fingers, in the manner of railroad couplers. Variations include the above, followed by an exchange of facing palm slaps, as in "Gimme Five," or fist bumping, tops-to-bottoms, "the face slap", or knuckles-to-knuckles. |

Feb-25-08 | | Tactic101: This was from a survey of mine. I'll get a few extracts from that page. Funny stuff. And this one is perhaps the best of them all: <5. If you could bring back any chess player from the dead back into the international scene, who would it be?> Thats a tough one, Steinitz will have some fun on the begginner circuit for awhile, Nimzovich might win a provisional class-C tournament, Greco would get knocked around the Class-D arena, and Alekhine might win a class-B tournament. As time flies by chess players grow ever tougher to the point where your 1600 USCF club buddy injected into the 19th century would make people say "Staunton who?" By <jaymthetactician>. Has a point, but certainly has no respect for the old players. Adds fuel to the legacy of the old discussion on the Spassky page. |

Mar-12-08 | | TheBB: JG27Pyth: <aazqua: This is white playing some ugly moves in the open and black exploiting white's lack of development and stumbling his way into a multi-piece sacrifice leading to a pretty pawn mate.> God. So true. I mean I hate that when I'm playing a nice game of chess and I think I'm just going to win a pawn or something, and wham bam, all of a sudden I've just stumbled into a multi-piece sacrifice ending with an elegant pawn mate... I mean how annoying is that!? When I was a lad I was impressed by such things too... but now that I'm 9 years old, I divide my time between running my 7 trillion Euro hedge fund and DNA sequencing my cat, by hand (I want to see if I can figure out how to make her sing the Neil Diamond catalog in Celtic...haha that's impossible, I'm really just trying to make her grow batwings). I certainly don't have time to be impressed by the odd random multi-piece 9 move mating combination sacrifice. OHHH crap... I just bent a spoon with my mind!!! Dammit that is sooo annoying. |

Kasparov with some thoughts on the world of chess, including this about Carlsen (as translated by translate.google.com):
"And in their age group, those born after 1985, I think most promising Carlsen. And interestingly, that he has made progress even without massive preparations. In Wijk aan Zee he played without a coach. Of course, the role of the coach is already somewhat different than 20 years ago. But still someone player usually helps analyze errors, prepare for the party. Carlsen arrived at the same tournament with Pope and sister. All successes - thanks to a huge talent and natural extracts."> <slomarko: <Carlsen arrived at the same tournament with Pope and sister> and then <frogbert> will say Carlsen doesn't have a very strong support. now we learn that even the Pope is in his team !!!!> <Shams: Honestly, the Pope's openings are really shaky and I doubt he is much help at all as a second. Since he turned 75 his tactics have really gone downhill.> <cuendillar: <Honestly, the Pope's openings are really shaky and I doubt he is much help at all as a second.
