<Format>:

[player]-[player] [result] [# of MOVES]

==4 Different Scoring Methods==

Standard Moves Ranker (1st place-Over[3pts], 1st place-Under [7pts], Exact [10pts])

Bonus Ranker (3rd place-Over[1pts],2nd place-Over[2pts],3rd place-Under [5pts], 2nd place-Under [6pts]

Standard Moves/Bonus Ranker [Add all to together]

1st place Ranker [how many 1st place you have in Standard Moves Ranker]

For example:

<Note: Participants 3, 4, and 5 are predicated on nobody scoring an exact as Participant 2 did. If someone hits an exact, the closest score under and over will score the points for second place.>

Actual Game: [player]-[player] 0-1 45

Participant 1: [player]-[player] 1/2 45
Participant 2: [player]-[player] 0-1 45
Participant 3: [player]-[player] 0-1 44
Participant 4: [player]-[player] 0-1 43
Participant 5: [player]-[player] 0-1 46

Participant 1: No points even though 45 is correct. Results must be correct. If Result is wrong and moves # is correct...you get no points whatsoever

Participant 2: 10 pts rewarded for correct Result/moves #

Participant 3: 7 pts rewarded for closest under (1st-Under) to 45 moves

Participant 4: 6 pts rewarded for the 2nd closest under (2nd-Under) to 45 moves.

Participant 5: 3 pts rewarded closest OVER(1st-OVER) to 45 moves.

Again, the description of Participant 3, 4, and 5 are based on there being no exact prediction as made by Participant 2.

<IF> there is an exact or an under closest, the highest scoring over participant will be 2nd over. The second closest over will be 3rd over. The <ONLY> time there will be a first over is if there is no exact or under winner.

Nov-29-12  The Last Straw: ?
Nov-29-12  morfishine: Good evening <OhioChessFan>! I see you've been assigned "All Other Moves".

I would like the opportunity to post 3 lines covering an immediate <28.Nf5>, the main point being, there isn't a single word on this move on the AT. And, what the heck, this is all fun, right?

(1) <28.Nf5 exf5 29.gxf5 Kh7 30.f6+ g6 31.Rxh6+ Kxh6 32.f5+ g5 Rh3+ Qh5 34.Rxh5+ Kxh5 35.Qh3 mate>

click for larger view

Of course, this will never happen, but its an example of what happens to Black's position when both the g-file and h-file are open. Lets check out example #2

(2) <28.Nf5 exf5 29.gxf5> Now I stop here, its Black to move. Do you see how powerful 30.Rg3 is? The point here, is after 30.Rg3, the square <h6> is helpless:

click for larger view

Lets move on, Black to move, and he tries 30...Qe7 to threaten Whites f-pawn (2) <28.Nf5 exf5 29.gxf5 Qf7 30.Rg3 Qxf5 31.Qxf5 Rxf5 32.Rxh6 Nb8 33.Rhg6 Rf7 34.e6 Re7 35.f5 Nd7 36.f6>

(or 32...Rc8 33.Rhg6 Rf7 34.e6>

click for larger view

(3) Finally, if Black tries 28.Nf5 exf5 29.gxf5 <29...Nf6> then this is what happens: <30.exf6 Qe1+ 31.Rf1 Qe8 32.fxg7 Kxg7 33.Rg1+ Kf7 34.f6 Rg8 35.Qh7+ Ke6 36.f5+ Kd6 37.Bf4+>

click for larger view

I have more continuations, but its starting to look like <28.Nf5> is extremely strong, if not winning outright. Please look over; I may have mishandled the attack or defense somewhere along the line.

Thank you, Morf

Nov-29-12  DcGentle: <morfishine>: *hmmm* There are problems with your proposal, I doubt whether it's really this strong, I get a negative eval.

In your first fun line, there is good news, it's already 32. Rh3#.

But then the other lines:

(2) 33... Ra7 and how will White force Black to remove Rf5 from its nice spot?

(3) 30... Rxf6 looks better for Black.

Just now I guess we should stay with 28. Nf1.

Nov-29-12  stunningmove: <morf> this is very creative thinking. It seems <Nf5> sacrifice has been the solution to a bunch of other positions. I will look at this as well tonight, I don't have a chess set at work.
Nov-29-12  morfishine: <DcGentle> Thanks for the quick reply; Now after 27.Rh2 Bd8 28.Nf5 exf5 29.gxf5 Qf7 try <30.f6>

click for larger view

This is the one I've been working on deep

And on Line (3) Try after 29...Nf6 <30.exf6 Rxf6 31.Re3 Qf7 32.Rhe2 Qh5+ 33.Kg1 Bc7 34.Re7>

click for larger view

Nov-29-12  DcGentle: <morfishine>: Ok, after <30. f6 Nxf6 31. Bxf5> we have reached this position:

click for larger view

Now Black has all of the sudden a rather safe castle and a surplus pawn, while it's not easy to see how White shall continue the attack. Akobian would not surrender here for sure. *hmmm*

Can do White better than in the following moves:

32. Rg3 h5 33. Bd2 Rfe8 34. Rg6 Re4 35. f5 h4 36. Rhg2 Rae8 37. Qf3 Qe7 38. Rh6 Qc7 39. Kg1 Qf7 40. Kh2 Kf8 41. Rh7 Ke7 42. Bg5 Kd8 43. Bxf6+ Qxf6 44. Rgxg7 Qd6+ 45. Kh1 Re3 46. Ra7 Qb8 47. Rhd7+ Kc8 48. Rdc7+ Qxc7 49. Rxc7+ Kxc7 50. Qf4+ Kd7

click for larger view

looks like a draw to me.

Nov-29-12  morfishine: Hello <OhioChessFan> !

One more line on <28.Nf5> before bedtime:

<28.Nf5 exf5 29.gxf5 Qe7 30.f6 Nxf6 31.exf6 Qxf6 32.f5 Ra7 33.Rh5 Raf7 34.Rg3 Kh8 35.Rg6 Qe7 36.Bxh6 Qe1+ 37.Rg1 Qe4+ 38.Qxe4 dxe4 39.Bxg7+ Kg8 40.Rh8 mate>

click for larger view

<DcGentle> I'm not the sales-guy type, so I'm not the one to push something like this. I feel its strong but will defer to what the team feels is best.

Perhaps it can be one of our side-lines to see how far White can go with this line.

Morf

Nov-30-12  twinlark: Done.
Nov-30-12  morfishine: <stunningmove> Thanks, but it appears Black can defend: even if we prepare with <Rg3> first (with the idea of already having rooks on h-file & g-file after our gxf5) it looks like Black can give the piece back and hold

My main worry is our retrograde Knight maneuver will allow Black time to consolidate (though our Knight will find some nice squares)

<DcGentle> Thanks again for looking, but it looks like this one comes up short :(

Nov-30-12  Thanh Phan: <OhioChessFan> Looking at some of the IE information pages, it seems they keep changing enough things to keep people off balance. Glad you found what you needed, take care
Nov-30-12  morfishine: Greetings <OhioChessFan>!

I am looking at the Black King running 28...Kf7

His position will collapse if he doesn't run. His only chance is probably something like this: <28.Nf1 Kf7 29.Rxh6 Ke7 30.Rh7 Rf7> and Black is only down 1-pawn

click for larger view

This will be our critical move: <31>

It looks like no matter what White plays, Black plays 31...Nf8, and the King gets off, for now

*Note: <30.Rxe6+> looks like an exciting alternative, but it seems to peter out with White down an exchange

OhioChessFan: Interesting line <morf> That puts a question to whether we push the f or g Pawn.

Here's a try with the g Pawn:

28. Nf1 Kf7 29. Rxh6 Ke7 30. Rh7 Rf7 31. g5 Nf8 32. g6 Nxh7 33. gxf7 Kxf7 34. Qxh7 Qg8

click for larger view

I think refusing to exchange Queens and piling up on the g Pawn will win this.

A try with 31. f5
28. Nf1 Kf7 29. Rxh6 Ke7 30. Rh7 Rf7 31. f5 Nf8 32. Rh8 Kd7 33. fxe6+ Ke6 34. Ng3 Kd7 35. Nh5 and Black is in serious trouble, though this position somehow strikes me as more fortressishy than the first.

click for larger view

Dec-01-12  morfishine: Good morning <OhioChessFan> This is undoubtedly a horrible position for Black, but all lines seem to eval poorly no matter what

I mentioned to <Winking> that perhaps all Black wants (at this point) is to save a little face by avoiding the crushing Kingside attack.

Dec-01-12  morfishine: Hello <OhioChessFan>! I was also looking at 28...Kh8 combined with 29...Rg8, which looks terrible for Black, but White must be extremely accurate: <28.Nf1 Kh8 29.Rfh3 Rg8 30.Ng3 Nf8 31.Nh5 g6 32.Ng3 Ra7>

click for larger view

This is just a sample, and clearly White can improve somewhere.

In other examples, Black is getting play down the e-file and g-file (due to our weak back rank and undefended Bishop)

I think it would be prudent for White to closely examine 28...Kh8 followed by 29...Rg8

Dec-01-12  morfishine: Hello <OhioChessFan>: Here's the last one: <28.Nf1 Kh8 29.Rfh3 Rg8 30.f5 Nf8 31.Ng3 Nh7 32.f6 g6 33.Rxh6 Ra7>

click for larger view

Again, barely hanging on. There must be more forceful move order for White...

I'm too tired to look at this anymore...Its probably all just a mirage...

Dec-01-12  morfishine: <OhioChessFan> I'm starting to realize in the 28...Kh8 29...Rg8 line, White's subsequent <f6> kills

OhioChessFan: <I mentioned to <Winking> that perhaps all Black wants (at this point) is to save a little face by avoiding the crushing Kingside attack.>

I think all he wants is to play 30 or maybe 31 moves and then resign.

  OhioChessFan: <28.Nf1 Kh8 29.Rfh3 Rg8 30.Ng3 Nf8 31.Nh5 g6 32.Ng3 Ra7>

30. f5 and it's over.

click for larger view

30..exf5 and Fritz finds mate in 13.

30..Nf6 (What an awful move. He'd resign first.) 31. exf6 Bxf6 (gxf6 and Fritz finds mate) 32. g5 and the rest is simple.

click for larger view

30...Ra7 31. fxe6 Qxe6 32. Bxh6

click for larger view

30..Rf8 31. Bxh6 Any time we get that in, game's over.

OhioChessFan: Hmmm, not sure what diagrams I was trying to show, those aren't right, but anyway, 30. f5 and Black can resign.
Dec-01-12  morfishine: Yes <OCF>, I finally found the key move, as you point out <f5> for starters, and no matter how much Black Squirms, once White gets in the killer <f6>, he's finis

Thanks much for looking! :)

Dec-01-12  The Last Straw: We should wait a little in case we have to push g5, but when f5 or g5 is ready we should make a run for it!
