<Format>:

[player]-[player] [result] [# of MOVES]

==4 Different Scoring Methods==

Standard Moves Ranker (1st place-Over[3pts], 1st place-Under [7pts], Exact [10pts])

Bonus Ranker (3rd place-Over[1pts],2nd place-Over[2pts],3rd place-Under [5pts], 2nd place-Under [6pts]

Standard Moves/Bonus Ranker [Add all to together]

1st place Ranker [how many 1st place you have in Standard Moves Ranker]

For example:

<Note: Participants 3, 4, and 5 are predicated on nobody scoring an exact as Participant 2 did. If someone hits an exact, the closest score under and over will score the points for second place.>

Actual Game: [player]-[player] 0-1 45

Participant 1: [player]-[player] 1/2 45
Participant 2: [player]-[player] 0-1 45
Participant 3: [player]-[player] 0-1 44
Participant 4: [player]-[player] 0-1 43
Participant 5: [player]-[player] 0-1 46

Participant 1: No points even though 45 is correct. Results must be correct. If Result is wrong and moves # is correct...you get no points whatsoever

Participant 2: 10 pts rewarded for correct Result/moves #

Participant 3: 7 pts rewarded for closest under (1st-Under) to 45 moves

Participant 4: 6 pts rewarded for the 2nd closest under (2nd-Under) to 45 moves.

Participant 5: 3 pts rewarded closest OVER(1st-OVER) to 45 moves.

Again, the description of Participant 3, 4, and 5 are based on there being no exact prediction as made by Participant 2.

<IF> there is an exact or an under closest, the highest scoring over participant will be 2nd over. The second closest over will be 3rd over. The <ONLY> time there will be a first over is if there is no exact or under winner.

Fusilli: Cool puzzle. The kind that you solve by thinking: what can black do right now?
Mar-18-24
Premium Chessgames Member
Fusilli: Also, it may be worth noting that the only way to arrive at that position is if black played Kh8 in response to Nh6+. That'd be ridiculous, unless black did not see Bf6 and is just taunting white.

A way to make the puzzle possible in real play would be to add a white and a black pawn stopping each other, for example on a4 and a5, where the last move was, presumably, a5. But then the puzzle would violate a basic rule of puzzles, which is that no piece should be on the board for no good reason. And making the position more likely to happen in a real game is not a good reason.

  Fusilli: White to play.

This puzzle is as much about why the incorrect move is incorrect as it is about why the correct move is correct.

OhioChessFan: Nice endgame puzzle. White can also blow it on the second move! The key moves are

1. a7 Rb1+ 2. Ka3, NOT Ka5.

Mar-23-24
Premium Chessgames Member
Fusilli: <OCF> Indeed! I do like the concept that 1.a7 is *not* to create space for the white king to move upwards, but to avoid the drawing trap that results from:

1.b7? Rb1+ 2.Ka3 Kc3 3.Ka2 Rb2+ 4.Ka1 Rb6

5.a7 Ra6+ 6.Kb1 Rb6+ 7.Kc1 Rh6 draw

So, the 1.b7 error had the unfortunate result of obstructing the a8-h1 diagonal, making impossible to stop the mate threat with anything but king moves.

In the alternative position below, by comparison, white wins.

OhioChessFan: It's a nice spin on the standard 2 Pawns on the 6th rank dominate a lone Rook motif. White has to be very careful to win it. And there are some mate threat issues on both the first rank and especially the a file.

  OhioChessFan: I don't see a mate in 6.

1. Qd8+ Kg3 2. Qc7+ Kf3 and the King is relatively free to roam

OhioChessFan: Mate in 2 starts with the nice, non-check! shot, Bb6.

Fusilli: <OhioChessFan: Mate in 2 starts with the nice, non-check! shot, Bb6.>

Nice. I love the knight on h3. If it moves, it frees up g1 for the queen check or it blocks the f2 escape from Qd2 check. Elegant composition.

Fusilli: About the mate in 6. I don't get it. The link takes me to this position, with <white> to play (?)

But are you guys saying that even the original position <Messiah> posted was unsolvable?

Mar-26-24  Messiah: <Fusilli> in the position you inserted Black takes with the Queen on h5, and now White should find Qd8+!! - I just did not realize that it is not an exactly-in-6 position, because Black can play Kg3. It is still dead lost for Black, but the shortest perfect-play conclusion is longer than 6 moves.
