Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Horace Bigelow received the game scores directly from Reinfeld. The second one is particularly interesting.

Phony Benoni: <MissScarlett> Many thanks. I've seen enough scores in Bigelow's column to be glad you found and deciphered them!

I'm scanning through Herman Steiner's column in the "Los Angeles Times" at the moment, and have found several new ones for Game Collection: US Open 1938, Boston = 39th ACF Congress plus some missing from Game Collection: 1938 US Championship. I've also been able to beef up Game Collection: Mexican Masters Tournament, 1934/1935, and, for the ultimate in obscurity, Game Collection: Banks - Steiner 1937.

  WannaBe: From ESPN:

<ESPN Stats and Information

Tuesday night was the 100th postseason game in Cubs history. It was also the first time they've been shut out in back-to-back postseason games.

Eleven teams have been shut out in consecutive games of a single postseason. Only two won the World Series (1917 White Sox, 1921 Giants).>

Penguincw: Hmm, with Rich Hill winning, it seems like a common theme this postseason is to make sure your SP's pitching hand is damaged in some way (such as a drone cut or blisters), and then you'll win...

Yes, there were a couple of touch and go moments. The Reinfeld-Factor game confirms that F Reinfeld vs Factor, 1932 was not a Western championship.

Games and correction submitted, of course.

The other games sent by Reinfeld were: A Hermann vs Fine, 1932 and Fine vs F Hazard, 1932. I suspect Bigelow's column was Woodger's source.

WannaBe: Hoping this will not jinx any of the two teams...

Cleveland's sending a young rookie (11 innings of MLB pitching) today to face Toronto. This reminds me of the second to last game of the season for LAD/SFG.

saffuna: I commented on the 1966 WS on the Lim page today. McNally gave up two runs in the first three innings of the first game, and then was either injured or taken out, don't remember. Moe Drabowsky came in and threw six shutout innings.

Then Palmer, Bunker and McNally threw shutouts to sweep the Series. Bunker and Palmer were both 21 years old.

Koufax was pitching a shutout in game two until Willie Davis committed three errors in one inning, letting in three runs, and that was that.

Dodgers' ERA was 2.50 and they were swept.

Penguincw: For the 2nd straight year, Jays are eliminated in the ALCS.

Well, great season for the Jays, it's just that the Indians' pitching were able to silent their bats, so hats (bats?) off to them.

I predicted the Indians in 6, but they won in 5, so close enough (at least I got the result right). Glad I don't feel bad for cheering against my home team.

This will probably be the Jays' best chance to win the title for a while, as they got some big moves to make in the offseason (perhaps I'll actually pay attention to it for once).

But since the Jays are out, at least I can cheer for the Cubs/Dodgers in the World Series without a conflict of interest. I mentioned I like the Dodgers, so I want them to win, but I don't know many people who wouldn't want the Cubs to finally break their curse.

WannaBe: <Phony Benoni> That 1905 series is interesting. Looking at that link, anyone know, what was the play-off format back then?

First game at Columbia Park, next day, it was Polo Ground IV, two days later at Columbia Park, then two in a row at Polo Ground IV (!?)

Interesting format, to say the least. Can anyone research on that?

Phony Benoni: <WannaBe> You have to remember that 1905 was only the 2nd World Series, and today's familiar scheduling format hadn't yet been established.

The first 7-game series was in 1909, and here is the schedule of that one:

1: PIT, Fri, 10/8
2: PIT, Sat, 10/9
3: DET, Mon, 10/11
4: DET: Tue, 10/12
5: PIT, Wed, 10/13
6: DET, Thu, 10/14
7: DET, Sat, 10/16

Don't ask me. Maybe the Steelers had a home game on Saturday.

It's hard to tell when the present day schedule started since the next 7-game series wasn't until 1924. That one did go 2-3-2.

Oct-20-16  Boomie: <The first 7-game series was in 1909>

That was the only time that Honus Wagner played against Ty Cobb. Wagner outplayed Cobb in that series and the Pirates won 4-3. Wagner stole 6 bases in the series. Wagner was 35 and Cobb was 22.
