Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: I have my worries, travis. Cubs seem a bit vulnerable to good pitching, which is the one thing Cleveland has. Probably a bunch of low-scoring games, when a lucky break could mean a lot.
Oct-25-16  Travis Bickle: "Say it ain't so Joe"! : 0

Phony, I think The Cubs have too much firepower in that lineup & they are a confident bunch swinging the bats. So sooner or later they are gonna bomb that Indian pitching...

P.S. 1 thing I find curious is Maddon is going with John Lester to start. When it was Jake Arietta's turn to pitch.. I would have started Arrieta, since the Indians like to run & Ol' Jonny doesn't want to throw to first base er any base. But he is hard to hit...

OhioChessFan: I guess I'm one of the few people who don't think it's cute that people put up bleachers and charge admission for rooftop seating. By what right can those people charge admission to watch a Cubs game and the Cubs have no recourse? If I owned Wrigley, I'd have put up something to block that as soon as they started charging admission.

saffuna: <ocf> I don't know the details, but there was some sort of conflict about that a couple of years ago. Maybe the Cubs demanded an annual fee from the owners of the buildings. And I definitely remember the Cubs suggesting they may put up signs to block the future.

I think the rooftop seats are a key part of the atmosphere of Wrigley Field.

  saffuna: I found this:

<The ruling by U.S. District Judge Virginia Kendall just days before Sunday's home opener could mean an end to the acrimonious dispute between the team and Skybox on Sheffield and Lakeview Baseball Club. The two businesses — controlled by Edward McCarthy — sued in January claiming that the 2,250-square-foot right-field video board will block their views into Wrigley Field and destroy their businesses.

The Cubs said this week the video board won't be done until July, but the ruling avoids another setback for the team's $375 million overhaul of the historic stadium. The team planned for a bleacher expansion project — which also includes four advertising signs along the top of the bleachers and the major video board in left field — to be completed by Sunday's opening night game, but it's long been hampered by various delays.>

<The legal sparring has centered on the interpretation of the contract in which the Cubs receive 17 percent of the rooftops' annual revenue in exchange for unblocked views into the ballpark. The contract predates the Ricketts family ownership of the team but was written by some current team employees, including the president of business operations, Crane Kenney.>

<But rancor grew after the Ricketts family purchased the team in 2009. The Ricketts family has bought three of the rooftop operations with plans for more as it expands control of the dollars that Cubs fans spend. >

So the owners of the rooftop seats do pay a fee to the Cubs. And the Cubs actually own some of them.

perfidious: <saffuna: Question, ca. 1964: Would you consider trading Kaline?

Detroit GM Jim Campbell: I would consider it, yes sir. If the Giants would offer Mays and Marichal and Cepeda for Kaline, I would have to give it some consideration.>

lmao

Formidable a player as Kaline was, I would take those three in a nanosecond, then trade Norm Cash so Cepeda could play first every day.

Oct-25-16  Travis Bickle: Attn: Breaking News... Yo Phony, Babe Ruth Jr. is in Cleveland taking BP! The Cubs brass say they're gonna give Kyle Schwarber a shot to DH! ; P

saffuna: I was foolling around at Retrosheet, and found this for Matty Alou in 1969: 1 home run, 41 doubles to lead the league. I wonder is that has happened any other time since 1920. (Alou hit .331.)

I know Dick Groat had around 350 career doubles but only 40 home runs. I think Groat overall hit the ball a lot harder than Alou.

OhioChessFan: Pete Rose had 42 doubles to lead the league, and 1 HR in 1980 for the Phillies, booooooo.

saffuna: Maybe line drive hitters who played on artificial turf at home had comparatively more doubles.
Oct-26-16

OhioChessFan: Not a bad hypothesis. I for sure saw Pete get doubles when a line drive bounced high in the outfield and that little bit of time the fielder waited was enough to get him to second. 4192 in fact was one of those and I was hoping he'd go for second and make it with a headfirst slide. I understand him not wanting to make an out but still.....

Oct-27-16  Travis Bickle: Hey Phony this is Harry Caray.. Cubs Win! Cubs Win! After I got through partying with The Cubs in their clubhouse.. I had to hop a flight to New York to do a Gig on The Jimmy Kimmel show. I fly Southwest because it's cheaper & when catch a flight back to Chicago I have a stop-over in Detroit. I'll stop by the campus library & we'll have an ice cold Budweiser or 2 my good pal! Nostrovia Mr Benoni hic!

saffuna: That's a good point, that outfielders have to wait for the big bounce on singles on artiificial turf.

I would guess that for that reason runners go first to third more often on artifical turf than on grass. It would be way too much work to prove, though, too many variables.
