Jan-15-12
 | | WannaBe: This will make for some interesting games next week, I will say 49ers -7 with O/U 42. Mr. <Shams> do you have the latest update from Las Vegas? =) This weekend, we saw defence (49ers and NY Giants), take down offence oriented teams. I have made numerous posts on how NE and GB have the 32nd and 31st ranked defence in the NFL. Next weekend, we have Baltimore going against a weak defensive team, but Baltimore may not have enough offence to compensate. NY Giants at San Francisco, will be a very, very hard hitting game, the survivor <WILL> need the 2 weeks off to heal, and lick their wound. It may very well come down to a 'war of attrition'. Manning played well, very sad, and too bad, that Rogers had so many passes dropped, but that is what you get in cold weather, that ball is just a rock. Watched the 2nd half of the NY-GB game at the local watering hole, never in my life have I seen so many Giants fans wearing 49ers t-shirts/hats/memorabilias. |
|
| Jan-15-12 | | hangingenprise: <wannabe> g-men won't give the game to the 9ers like the saints did.
g-men won't leave their heart in san francisco.
GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG-MEN |

| Jan-15-12 | | hangingenprise: i want to see lewis make brady's uniform grass stained!! |

 | | Phony Benoni: If I didn't know better, I would sense some partisanship and, yes, even excitement about upcoming sporting events around here. But this is a civilized chess site, so such sentiments are patently impossible. It must be a trick of the acoustics or something. Of course, if the Lions were still playing, things would be different. |
|
| Jan-15-12 | | hangingenprise: have to add some rock & roll to this sedative site:
G-Menhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCIU... |
|
Jan-15-12
 | | WannaBe: Going with the G-men next weekend, because Tom Coughlin is an ol' schooled coach, and defence wins Championships. Bal-NE, could be 14-13 game, will be exciting, because the score will be close, otherwise, expecting the punters holding their Swan Lake try-outs. |
|
| Jan-15-12 | | Shams: <WannaBe>
1/22 @New England -7.5 Baltimore 50
1/22 @San Francisco -2.5 NY Giants 43.5
I think the Pats cover. Niners and Giants is a very tough game to call, both teams looked brilliant. |
|
| Jan-15-12 | | hangingenprise: ray lewis after the game:
now you face tom brady and the patriots, how will you prepare for them?
ray: he is at the top of his game.
i am leaving right now to study film!
thank you. |
|
| Jan-15-12 | | hangingenprise: <phony> the lions will roar next season "if" they draft secondary help! |
|
Jan-15-12
 | | WannaBe: Wow, was I mistaken, I had NE -3, and SF -7...
Gotta talk to my 'guys' in LV, and make sure they didn't screw up the lines. Think NY will win, remember that botched hold/field goal from 12(?) years ago? Same 2 teams!! (At least my 42 was 'very close' to the O/U of 43 and half... Small consolation.) |
|
| Jan-15-12 | | Shams: <WannaBe> Remind me again how it is that you are a Giants fan but you live in Northern California? |
|
Jan-15-12
 | | WannaBe: Espn.com is having a poll, of 4 teams, who will win the Super Bowl... NE -- 39%
SF -- 27
NY -- 23
Bal -- 11
So, this weekend, we had 2 upsets, both in the NFC... While in the AFC, it was as predicted. Will we see a 'reverse' next weekend? Stay tuned, same Beaker station, same Beaker time, same Beaker's Beep-Beep-Beep!! |
|
Jan-15-12
 | | Phony Benoni: Two New teams in an old match-up, I think. Patriots seem more balanced, but I think Ravens keep it close. Probably a field-goal margin. I still don't trust SF, though they've proved me wrong so far. Final score in the teens, though; in fact, under in both games. <King Death> If it's any consolation, I'm usually wrong. |
|
Jan-15-12
 | | WannaBe: <Shams> Well, the story started like this: Once, upon a time, I was a regular at a pub, and I befriended some locale folks, and on a whim, I quit my day job and bought the pub. I later learned, a regular of mine, who have become a very good friend, is from NY, and attended a small mid-west college in Iowa, (I got my degree from a small Lutheran College in South Dakota, after my first two years at UCLA). So, we'd yak about sports, (drink schooners of beer) me, being a life-time member of the Dodgers club (drink more schooners), and him (drink more schooners) being a life-time member of the Yankees
(glug-glug-glug) club.
Anyway, of the remaining teams, I am rooting for NY, because of him, however, I also have another buddy, a postal office inspector, who is from Boston, and roots for New England. And during the NFL season, we'd all sit together, drink some brews (glug-glug-glug-glug-glug-glug-glug-glug), watch the games, talk a l'il trash, and 'The boys being boys'. But we all love, respect, and honour one, and another. And, so, anyhow, in a nutshell, it's complicated... =) |
|
| Jan-15-12 | | King Death: <Phony Benoni> Neither do I. The Niners rely way too much on Alex Smith managing the game and Akers for one field goal after another. SF barely beat them back when the Giants weren't playing all that well, so I'm not optimistic about seeing the Giants go down. |
|
| Jan-16-12 | | Jim Bartle: What's so strange about there being lots of Giants fans in Northern California? What are odd are Dodger fans. |
|
| Jan-16-12 | | Jim Bartle: Look at 6:04 of this video of the 1966 World Series. Doesn't it look as if Wills has such a huge lead that he could be picked off easily? And then he goes on lefty McNally's first move, and I don't understand why he didn't just throw over and hang Wills out to dry. Or have the rules changed since then? I never see anyone with a lead like that today. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJr4... |
|
| Jan-16-12 | | technical draw: Thanks for that link <JB> it was great hearing the names of the baseball players I grew up with, especially Luis Aparicio. Also I got a kick out of the fans wardrobe. Lots of white shirts and ties and hats. Also the crowd then was much older than the crowds today. But to answer your question: To me it doesn't look like Wills had that much of a lead. At least not enough to pick him off. But I guess it was McNally's call and he paid the price. |
|
Jan-16-12
 | | Phony Benoni: <JB> I'd agree with <TD>; the lead didn't look that big. It's also possible that, with a three-run lead, McNally wasn't quite as concerned about Wills stealing a base. The name of director <Lew Fonseca> rang a bell: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...
Not a bad player, but he never made it to the World Series. |
|
| Jan-16-12 | | Jim Bartle: Except Wills took off well before McNally committed to throw home. Also, could be since we never see that angle on TV anymore, I was confused. And maybe the O's really weren't that concerned. After all, the Dodgers only scored two runs in the entire Series. |
|
| Jan-16-12 | | technical draw: Yes. Lew Fonseca, not shabby at all. Lived to be 90 and played in the 20's and 30's. (for some reason he didn't play in 1926.) He ended with a career batting avg. of .316. |
|
| Jan-16-12 | | King Death: <Phony Benoni> Since Fonseca didn't play for the Giants in the NL or the Yankees then A's in the AL he had no chance of getting a ring. This player had some major injuries so he only played 4 seasons full time: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lew_Fo... |
