Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

WannaBe: Today's NYY-OAK game features a couple of real heavy-weights, C.C. vs. Bartolo.

Let's hope they both don't simultaneously trip and fall while exchanging sides. And it's a good thing AL's pitchers don't bat, otherwise the earth might tilt awkwardly.

Jul-22-12  Jim Bartle: I wonder which player holds the record for most years with a new team each year, complete season each team.

A strong candidate must be Reggie Sanders with six from 1999 through 2004, playing for San Diego, Atlanta, Arizona, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, and St. Louis. (Then he played a second year for the Cards, breaking the streak.)

He wasn't great, basically just a good-enough player to fill an outfield spot for a team that needed one, but he managed to play in the World Series three of those six years.

Jul-22-12  Jim Bartle: What's the big deal about Bartolo Colon's size? I looked him up on retrosheet, and it says he weighs 185.

perfidious: This is a happy day for baseball fans, with Barry Larkin going to Cooperstown. Class act all the way.

It's more than unfortunate that Ron Santo couldn't have lived to see this day for himself.

Jul-22-12  Jim Bartle: Barry Larkin going into the Hall of Fame? It's about time.

Phony Benoni: The Lions have got a real problem. When Jim Schwartz came in to coach, he obviously encouraged the players to act "tough". At the time, they needed that image to earn some respect from the rest of the league.

But it quickly escalated to becoming dirty thugs on the field. And now there is a whole series of off-year arrests, often multiple incidents for a single player.

Schwartz has got to gain control of his players NOW and stop this. In addition, the front office needs to pass up on questionable characters, regardless of talent. Any player who goes over the line has got to be disciplined by the team seriously and in an unmistakable manner.

It's good to see the team winning, but the price is becoming too high.

Jul-22-12  Jim Bartle: I've always wondered how much a team should worry about players' (employees') behavior away from the team. But you certainly can't have a team where the players think they're above the law, and act violently.

I don't understand how players find it hard to be aggressive on the field, and law-abiding and respectful in their daily lives.

I find it curious, and encouraging, that Suh is one of the players who spoke up this time, saying the players need to be more responsible.

WannaBe: Is just me, or is HoF induction was always during the week, and a team from each league would play an exhibition game by calling up their Triple-A squad and play a game at Coop'town?

Or have I really gone nuts, like my relatives/ex-wives and my doctor(s) claims?

Phony Benoni: <WannaBe> The details are a little different, but you can be forgiven since this is a distant memory. Why, the last game was before the Lady GaGa Era!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double...

Jul-22-12  Jim Bartle: The Wikipedia says the Hall of Fame game was the last in-season exhibition, but I guess that means games between two major league teams. I think some teams play against one of their farm teams, or against a local college team, once or twice a season.

The regulars start but usually come out after batting a couple of times and the subs take over. And they usually start a pitcher from AA or AAA in order not to use up the major league arms.

Phony Benoni: <perfidious> Something drastic had to be done. There was a lot of speculation on the local sports shows that he would be kept since he was projected to start at one of their weakest positions, but they needed to start drawing the line.

perfidious: <Phony Benoni> Maybe Berry being at that position helped in their decision; as you say, the hammer had to fall in any case, if they were to get the message across that persistent flouting of the law would not be tolerated.

perfidious: <Phony Benoni> Quite true, for the same reason this behaviour has been (and will be) condoned in future: when one has athletic abilities, such niceties as the type of human being one is are swept aside in the fervour to develop said talent on the field (Freudian slip: almost clacked out pitch!).
