| Jul-23-12 | | Jim Bartle: Are you kidding me? This doesn't feel right, Ichiro on the Yankees. I wonder how Ibañez, Andruw Jones and especially Swisher feel about that? And where will he hit in the lineup? Doesn't Jeter have permanent right to the leadoff spot? I guess he can hit second. And as I understand it, Ichiro has always sort of kept to himself. It's going to be different with a hundred reporters looking to stir things up everywhere he turns. |
|
Jul-23-12
 | | WannaBe: <Jim Bartle> Due to declining numbers, Ichiro has not batted lead-off this year... Maybe DH? Don't follow the Yankees that closely, I know they are in first place for AL East, but can't tell you who their regular DH is. |

Jul-23-12
 | | WannaBe: http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/sto... OK, NYY OF B. Gardner is out for the season, J. Giardi said Ichiro will bat 8th, and play RF. Ichiro is also in the last year of his five year contract with Seattle, all according to ESPN. |

 | | WannaBe: You know what I 'love' about news and news' headlines these days, with Twitter, Facebook, Texting, Emails, Under Water Telegraph Lines, Carrier Pigeons, Pony Express... http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/... <Orlando Magic Might Keep Dwight Howard for Now>. Wow, like, as if, that just kept me so... I don't know, enrapt [sic]? Like, as if, what is the other option, not keep him?! Make him go sleep with the fishes [sic]?? Trade him to ACME for a back-pack rocket and a case of TNT plus 2 anvils to be named later? |
|
| Jul-24-12 | | Jim Bartle: Oops, just looked up Ichiro, didn't realize he was slipping so much. .288 on-base percentage this year. Maybe he won't reach 3,000 hits after all, though of course he would have if he'd arrived before he was 27. |
|
Jul-24-12
 | | perfidious: <Jim> If one takes Suzuki's time in Japan, along with his accomplshments in the bigs, mortal lock for the Hall when he hangs up the cleats. Let him slip all he wants. He's always needed to hit for average because he's been an impatient hitter, so never walked a lot. |
|
Jul-24-12
 | | perfidious: On the subject of Cooperstown, anyone think John Smoltz has a legitimate shot? http://www.baseball-reference.com/p... |
|
Jul-24-12
 | | Phony Benoni: <perfidious> Smoltz, probably not if he's judged by his numbers. One 24-win season, nothing else above 17. Somewhat unusual in going from top starter to top reliever and back again, but nothing really noteworthy or memorable. If he had relieved for four years his numbers would have been comparable to Jack Morris, who is getting a lot of HOF attention. But Morris was much more memorable because of his personality and some spectacular postseason performances. Smoltz's best chance may be the Tinker-Evers-Chance Factor. Maddux and Glavine will probably make it, which might make win a few votes for Smoltz. |
|
| Jul-24-12 | | Jim Bartle: I'd clearly say yes, especially since he spent years as an excellent starter and as a closer. Speaking of the Hall of Fame, look at the current Yankees' roster. Four sure Hall-of-Famers (Rivera, Rodriguez, Jeter and Ichiro) plus several in mid-career who have a chance to reach the Hall of Fame someday (Cano, Granderson, Sabathia, Teixeira). That's a lot of star power. |
|
Jul-24-12
 | | perfidious: <Phony Benoni> In my eyes, Smoltz brings this HOFer to mind: Herb Pennock. http://www.baseball-reference.com/p... Given the context of his era, Pennock's single-season win totals are no better and he didn't hit his stride till he pitched for the Yankee powerhouses. Smoltz may well have a better resume than Pennock, but I'm not sure about him getting there. |
|
| Jul-24-12 | | Jim Bartle: I'm sure I'm biased because I just loved Smoltz's big overhand motion in his first years before he was injured. It was just beautiful to watch, and not many throw that way any more. Plus, of course, game seven of the '91 World Series. |
|
Jul-24-12
 | | perfidious: <Jim> That was a game for the ages. |
|
| Jul-24-12 | | Jim Bartle: Absolutely, and also the first game I had seen on TV in at least two years. Saw it at the home of the US ambassador, one of the few who had satellite TV back then. Just riveting. I remember the commentators didn't say a thing at the time about Lonnie Smith not scoring on the double in the eighth, who he was faked out by the Minnesota infielders. Later he became the goat because of it. |

 | | WannaBe: D@ng it, gotta go see my optometrist... |
|
Jul-24-12
 | | Phony Benoni: If you can see your optometrist, why do you have to? |
|
Jul-24-12
 | | perfidious: Good point by <Phony Benoni>, but many don't let that get in the way, otherwise it would have to rate as a poor choice of profession. |
|
Jul-25-12
 | | keypusher: <perfidious: <Phony Benoni> In my eyes, Smoltz brings this HOFer to mind: Herb Pennock.> I suspect Pennock is one of the HOF'ers that make the sabermetricians foam at the mouth. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/... On the other hand, he did go 5-0 in the World Series. |

 | | OhioChessFan: <JB: That's a lot of star power.> Amazing what a couple hundred mill a year can get you. |
|
| Jul-25-12 | | Jim Bartle: Look what $2 mill could get you, once upon a time?
Johnny Bench $200,000.00
Joe Morgan $200,000.00
Pete Rose $188,000.00
Dave Concepcion $85,000.00
Jack Billingham $82,500.00
Bob Bailey $72,500.00
Cesar Geronimo $70,500.00

| Jul-25-12 | | dakgootje: I'd be willing to play baseball for $2mil a year.
Just, you know, throwing it out there.. In case anyone has a couple of million just lying around, gathering dust. |
|
| Jul-25-12 | | Jim Bartle: click for larger viewI reached this position with white against a computer program, and I think there's a nice sacrificial win. White to play. |
|
Jul-25-12
 | | WannaBe: 2 mil in '76 would be about 8.13 mil today. Just enough for the Florida Marlins. =)) |

 | | perfidious: Fellow baseball detectives, have a go at the CSI: Box Score on this page. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/8... |
|
Jul-26-12
 | | Phony Benoni: <perfidious> Easy once you spot the name <Youngblood> in both box scores. The games were played on the same day in two different cities, Joel Youngblood having been traded in the interim: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... Another instance was the Max Flack for Cliff Heathcote trade, which took place between two teams which had just finished the first game of a doubleheader. http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... |
