Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: I was going to ask if they counted Marv Throneberry dropping his birthday cake, but that story is apparently apocryphal. Darn.

What does seem to be true is the day he hit a triple, but got called out on appeal for missing first base. When Stengel came out to argue, he was supposedly told "Don't bother, Casey. He missed second too."

Which led to two remarkable situations. (1) Throneberry gets two RBIs on an out to first. (2) When the next hitter (Charlie Neal) hit a home run, Stengel followed him around on the basepaths pointing to each base in turn.

Sep-17-12  Jim Bartle: Great story. I remember once an American League pitcher hit a double in an interleague game, and the third base coach went out to talk to him, pointed to third base, and made running gestures.

That Mets lineup actually has several pretty good players, even one Hall of Famer (Ashburn). Unfortunately all of them were over the hill.

Sep-18-12  crawfb5: I've been going through Gordon's big collection of Reshevsky games. He has three games from the 1931 Tulsa tournament not in the database:

Rd 1 10/5/31: Reshevsky-Wilber 1-0
Rd 2 10/6/31: Reshevsky-Mlotkowski 1-0
Rd 7 10/10/31: Barnes-Reshevsky 1/2

I can submit them in the next few days, assuming I can remember. :-)

Sep-18-12  Jim Bartle: Watching A's-Detroit (and I've watched the Tigers quite a few times), and all the worry that Cabrera couldn't handle third base seems to have been unnecessary. All I see him doing is making good plays, tough plays.

Phony Benoni: <JB> Cabrera has definitely improved at third base as the season went on. Still no Ron Santo, but if he can get to the ball he'll field it and make a good trhow.

Offensively, his 40 home runs are second to Josh Hamilton's 42, while he leads with 129 RBIs (six tonight) and a .332 average. The Real, Honest to Goodness Triple Crown is not out of the question, especially since he is on a power streak: I think he's homered in five straight games now.

The Tigers are definitely letting out a little frustration tonight. The last couple of weeks have not been good to them, and there is a very real chance they won't make the playoffs--which will probably cost Cabrera the MVP, Triple Crown or no Triple Crown.

Phony Benoni: I did some pitching in church league slow pitch softball. I was reasonably effective as long as I kept the ball low and inside. We had a really good third baseman, even if he never spoke to me.

One day, the ball went down the middle of the plate, and the batter hit it right up the middle. My middle. And remember, this is church league; we didn't use protective gear.

I managed to throw the runner out, then collapsed and displayed my lunch. They took me out of the game, and the relief pitcher stopped talking to me as well.

I went home, and when I saw the imprint of the ball on my stomach decided it was about time to end my athletic career.

Sep-19-12  Travis Bickle: I remember when Ron Santo got beaned right in the face while hitting against The Mets at Wrigley. At that time there was seating in centerfield after Santo got his right cheek fractured they went to that green hitting backdrop and removed seating so hitters could pick up the ball quicker.

To me getting hit in the head while batting is much tougher to comeback from than getting hit while pitching. Batting you see every pitch coming in at you as opposed to pitching you sometimes see nothing and your concentrating on the pitch you're throwing and getting the batter out. Also pitchers throw inside to keep a hitter honest. After getting hit in the head it really is a tough psychological task standing in there and not throwing off your timing.

When Ron Cey got beaned during a world series when he was trying to get ready to comeback and play he had long walks in the outfield to try to get his mind right.

Sep-19-12  Jim Bartle: Well, the biggest difference is that batters wear helmets but pitchers don't.
Sep-19-12  Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle> Yes that's true but according to that article Wannabe posted pitchers are getting hit in the face where a helmet would do no good.
Sep-19-12  Jim Bartle: That's really bad. Think what would happen if the major leagues permitted metal bats.

But my thought went the other way. When a batter gets beaned these days, he almost always gets hit on the helmet. He's protected. Obviously a pitch hitting a guy directly in the face would be disastrous.

WannaBe: One possible solution, is to have the pitchers wear similiar masks to catchers/hockey goalies/field hockey player.

WannaBe: Vince Young have declared, that he is broke. In 2006, he signed a 26 million guaranteed contract.
Sep-19-12  Travis Bickle: The pitcher could wear a lightweight fiber glass mask like Jason and scare the hell out of the batters before he threw the ball. ; P

Sep-19-12  crawfb5: <PB> I submitted the Tulsa 1931 games. Here they are in case you want to do anything with them while they're in the pipeline. I assumed "Barnes" was <George Samuel Barnes> based on his other games. If you know differently, that can be fixed down the road. Expect periodic additions from other early Opens as I work through Gordon's book.

You hear about things like that every so often. I think Jack Clark and Jose Canseco went bankrupt as well. Plus of course rapper MC Hammer (the ex-A's ballboy). I just don't understand how it's possible, unless they have money managers who just steal from them or they get (extra) greedy and make risky investments that don't pan out.
