Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Sep-19-12  Jim Bartle: Good point, I was wrong about batters not getting hit in the face. I remember an absolutely gruesome photo of him on the cover of SI.

http://www.google.com.pe/imgres?num...

Sep-19-12  Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle> Remember the NHL days of goalies with no masks? It's unbelievable to me now that a goalie could stand in goal with no face protection against slapshots close to a hundred mph by the likes of a guy like Bobby Hull! Plus half the time goalies get screened by their own defenseman, also by opposing players and pucks get misdirected.
Sep-19-12  Jim Bartle: I don't remember much about hockey back then, but to play goalie without a mask seems suicidal. I believe Montreal goalie Jacques Plante was the first to wear one.

I remember a girl in the stands was killed by a puck a few years ago (that's why they have nets today), so it must have been twice as dangerous for the goalies.

Now from the little I see of hockey, the goalies seem so overloaded with such huge pads it seems as if they cover the entire goal without having to move. They leave the tiniest holes.

perfidious: <Jim> Plante was; matter of fact, while wearing his mask, he took a puck between the eyes which knocked him cold and left him with dizziness for a week. Doctors told him that without the mask, he'd have been killed.

In 1980, I was at a UVM game when a puck tumbled over the glass and struck a glancing blow on my head. Didn't hurt anything except the puck, of course.

WannaBe: Back in those days, hockey sticks weren't curved as today, hence the speed wasn't that bad.

The puck that killed the poor girl, was a deflection, went over the glass, bounced/glanced another fan, before striking her.

I think she is the first fan casualty in hockey, I also can be wrong...

WannaBe: The puck was a deflection of a shot, but it did not strike another fan before hitting her.

Sep-19-12  Jim Bartle: Does the curved stick make it possible to shoot harder or does it make it make the puck move around as it flies?

Sep-19-12  Travis Bickle: Hey Phony how are ya pal?! I know your Lions lost a tough one. When my Bears lost to the cheesers I was sick. I was feeling really down driving my cab playing loud rock n roll, drinking heavy when the shift was over and nothing helped... Then I realized there's always next Sunday! Just Win Baby!! ; P

Phony Benoni: <Travis> The only consolation I have is that it looks the Vikings won't win the division!
Sep-19-12  Travis Bickle: Nah Phony you got the Titans this Sunday... Easy ballgame will get you Lions back in the win column! We Bears have The Rams... Wannabe's Raiders look pretty bad. Sorry Wabbit. JB's 49ers look mighty tough! A once finesse team with an ex bear headcoach has them playing tough physical Bear football!

Phony Benoni: <Travis> Oh, I don't know. The 49ers previous coach was also an ex-Bear, and he didn't work out so well.

Watch out for those Rams. Lions had them the first week, and they played tough.

Sep-19-12  Travis Bickle: True Dr Benoni, another ex-Bear Jeff Fisher is their headcoach! When he got injured playing for The Bears he was Buddy Ryans assistant.
Sep-20-12  Shams: Wasn't Fisher injured by Steelers coach Mike Tomlin?
Sep-20-12  Travis Bickle: <Shams> That's a good question?
Sep-20-12  Shams: <Travis> I had the wrong Pittsburgh coach. From Fisher's wikipedia entry:

<In 1983, Fisher had suffered a broken leg on a punt return when he was tackled by then-Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Bill Cowher, the future head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Coincidentally the two became rivals as head coaches beginning in the AFC Central in 1995; Fisher's Oilers/Titans squads came out with an 11-7 record against Cowher's Steelers.>

Sep-20-12  Shams: Here's what I don't get about shutting Strasburg down: why didn't they skip the first six weeks of his season instead of the last six?
Sep-20-12  Travis Bickle: <Shams> I can't help you there, being a Cubs fan I haven't watched baseball much this season. Here's what I found on Strasburg.

Phony Benoni: <Shams> Skipping the six weeks would be much like missing the first few weeks of a class. It would be very difficult to catch up.

For most players, April is much like extended spring training, and they don't begin to hit their stride until later. By starting later, you face hitters who are at a more advanced stage within the season.

By the way, Miguel Cabrera hit another home run tonight. I'd like to show the highlight because the pitch is a fast ball high out of the strike zone. Many hitters can't make contact with a pitch like this, much less clobber it over the fence.

perfidious: <Phony Benoni> At the zenith of his career, Jim Rice could take pitches like that over the bullpen wall in right at Fenway, but as you say, there are very few who can do what Cabrera did.

Sep-20-12  Jim Bartle: The pitch Bobby Thomson hit was high and inside, but of course it wasn't really hit all that hard or far, just took advantage of the odd dimensions of the Polo Grounds, 279 ft. down the line with an overhand even closer.
