   |    | Phony Benoni: You mean the Giants won the pennant?
I've always found it amusing how Hodges is screaming at the top of his lungs, "<They're> going crazy! <They're> going crazy!" He wasn't exactly in full possession of his faculties either. |
	 |

| Sep-20-12 |    | Jim Bartle: And Ernie Harwell was doing the call on TV, but it wasn't recorded. I suspect it was more restrained. Hodges came west with the Giants and teamed with the wonderful Lon Simmons for Giants games into the 70s before retiring. He was replaced by Al Michaels, who only lasted a couple of years before moving on to bigger things. |

   |    | Phony Benoni: <JB> Wikipedia has an article about Thomson's home run. Of course. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shot_H...(baseball) Here's the section on Harwell's call:
<"Ernie Harwell called the game for Giants television flagship WPIX—the independent station's broadcast was carried nationally on the NBC network, the first coast-to-coast live telecast of a Major League Baseball game—and his description of the home run was a simple shout of "It's gone!" almost at the moment Thomson's bat struck the ball. Harwell later admitted he had probably called it "too soon", but fortunately for him, the call proved to be correct. "And then," Harwell recalled, "the pictures took over."> Yeah. Restrained sounds about right. |
	 |

| Sep-20-12 |    | Jim Bartle: My favorite home run call is still "I can't believe what I just saw!" |
	 |

   |    | WannaBe: My favourite home run call is "Dinner is ready."
 And I run home. |

| Sep-21-12 |    | Shams: <Phony Benoni> Thanks for your reply re: Strasburg; instead of sitting him to start the season, what about skipping his every fourth start or so? Surely with his ability they could schedule things so he had a chance to peak at playoff time. It looks like a catastrophe the way things have shaken out. The Nationals are a team with a first-in-history shot at the playoffs, and their staff ace, with once in a generation talent, must watch from a glass box with a perfectly healthy arm. As an observer I find it maddening. Were I a season ticket-holder or an aging veteran on the squad with his first and only shot at October, it would seem more like apostasy. I'm imagining the Mariners getting to the ALDS and having to lock Felix Hernandez in the basement. It would make Super Bowl XL resentment look like frustration our favorite American Idol candidate lost. |

| Sep-21-12 |    | Travis Bickle: Hey Phony, here's some baseball verbage for you.

Sep-21-12
   |    | Phony Benoni: <Shams> I can understand shutting down Strasburg for the end of the regular season. The Nationals will be in the playoffs, should have little trouble clinching the division without him, and Strasburg is coming off major arm surgery. But unless they are aware of some condition, shutting him down completely for the postseason seems excessive. I can see him not taking his regular turn, but one start in each playoff series (and two in the World Series) shouldn't be too much strain. |
	 |

| Sep-21-12 |    | Jim Bartle: Strasburg is an extremely hard thrower, I think, which can be reason for caution. Now I've seen Max Scherzer pitch a couple of times for Detroit, and he throws extremely hard, scary hard. Has he had arm trouble? |
	 |

Sep-21-12
   |    | Phony Benoni: As a matter of fact, Scherzer came out his last start after two innings with a "tired right shoulder". Not supposed to be serious and MRIs were negative, but still worrisome. I don't recall serious arm trouble. His problem has always been being erratic. Apparently, he has a very small margin for error in his pitching motion, and if it's a "Bad Max" day he can get lit up in a hurry. When he's in the groove, well, he had one game this year with 15 strikeouts--all swinging. His ball moves. |

Sep-21-12
   |    | Phony Benoni: Melky Cabrera will not be eligible for the NL batting title this year: http://detroit.tigers.mlb.com/news/... This was probably the right decision, but I'm still disappointed. With Miguel Cabrera leading the AL batting race, we could have had two winners with the same last name. |
	 |

| Sep-21-12 |    | Jim Bartle: When I saw the headline, I thought, "Why doesn't Miguel Cabrera want to win the batting championship?" I'd completely forgotten about the other one. |
	 |

Sep-22-12
   |    | perfidious: Tigers seem to like power pitchers-with Dave Dombrowski at the helm, you'll not be seeing finesse pitchers in their system very often. |
	 |

| Sep-22-12 |    | Jim Bartle: What's out of the ordinary in this game?
 http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... |

Sep-22-12
   |    | Phony Benoni: Another one of those pitcher-position-pitcher switches. They brought in Billy Pierce just to face Ted Williams, and moved the pitcher (Dorish) to third where he would be out of the way with Williams hitting. |
	 |

| Sep-22-12 |    | Jim Bartle: Very quick, PB. But they had to take Minoso out of the game to do it. One of my favorites when I first started following baseball. |

   |    | WannaBe: I was going to stream the U. of Ariz @ U. of Oreg game (7:30PM Pacific) on espn3.com but then I found out. It's in Spanish. Aye Caramba! Oy Vey!! |

Sep-23-12
   |    | Phony Benoni: Y tú dejes que eso te detenga?
Actually, it's not hard. If the announcer starts screaming, it's a touchdown. Then all you have to learn are a few numbers, and you have the whole story. |
	 |

Sep-23-12
   |    | WannaBe: <Phony> Sorry about your Lions. The Raiders' (radio) announcers are ripping the replacement refs a new one. |
	 |

Sep-23-12
   |    | Phony Benoni: Lawd, that was a frustrating game.
The Titans scored five touchdowns, all of 60 yards or more, three of which were returns on a kickoff, punt, and fumble recovery. The last came with about a minute left to give the Titans a 14-point lead. So the Lions score with 18 seconds left, recover an onside kick, complete a Hail Mary with the clock expiring, and we go to overtime. Yawn. Titans cross midfield, so they can only score a field goal. Lions drive right back until they get fourth and inches at the 5 yard line. Lions line up in an attempt to draw the Titans offside. The center gets confused and snaps the ball anyway. No gain. Titans win. I don't have to watch any more football the rest of the year. It all happened in this game. |
	 |

Sep-23-12
   |    | WannaBe: Nah, if you don't watch any more football, you're gonna miss the quick on 1st and goal from the 2-yard line... Do team(s) even do quick kick anymore?? |
	 |

| Sep-23-12 |    | Jim Bartle: On the 5-yard line and don't score? Yikes.
I see the Raiders came from well behind to beat Pittsburgh in overtime, but I have no idea how they did it. I haven't seen a quick kick for a long time. The only one I ever saw in person was at a UCLA-Stanford game. The kicker was Billy Kilmer, so that'll tell you how long ago it was. |
