Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

   Jun-10-22 L T Magee vs E L Holland, 1948 (replies)

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Feb-20-14  Travis Bickle: Nah Phony the damn thing is from Yahoo... : 0 It was great! It had a guy on a scaffolding putting a book away with these mountainous stacks of shelves of books that looked something like The Grand Canyon! lol

I'm really bummed out ya can't see it.

Phony Benoni: You should see my desk, Travis.

There are millions of pictures of librarians around. All you need is a whomp-de-whomp model (clothing optional) wearing glasses and reading a book, and you have a librarian.

The reality is not quite like that. Few librarians have time to read while on the job.

Feb-20-14  Travis Bickle: Mr Benoni can you see it now?

WannaBe: As of right now, Poland and Slovakia have an interesting "pattern" in the winter Olympics.

They get/win the Gold, or nothing, Poland have 4-Gs and Slovakia have 1-G, and/but nothing else.

White to play and mate in 549 moves. If you can't spare a minute or two for solving it, the answer is at Tim Krabbé;s <Open Chess Diary>, which is thankfully returning from a long hiatus):

keypusher: Any of you baseball savants care to opine on the new home plate collision rule?

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on...

Feb-24-14  Travis Bickle: <keypusher> I was watching ESPN sports & they quoted George Brett on that subject. Brett said, "catchers are taught to block the plate with their foot, the new ruling sucks. I like watching collisions". LOL!

I think nowadays with athletes in just about every sport weight training and working out year round that their bigger & stronger than yesteryears players. Thus the rule changes in The NFL to keep QB's alive! I think they had to change the ruling for blocking the plate but with the ruling change a catcher under certain situations can still block the plate...

56% of the poll say it's a bad move. And I think so, too.

Feb-24-14  Jim Bartle: What I don't see is a clear definition of what's allowed and what isn't.
Feb-24-14  Travis Bickle: Hey Phony, this defensive stud Jadeveon Clowney ran a 40 yard dash at the combine in 4.53! An ESPN reporter said Clowney's 40 time was faster than when Colin Kaepernick ran it & a prominent NFL wide receiver that I can't recall. He also beat QB Johnny Manziel's 40 yard time! The guy weighs 266 lbs. & bench pressed 225 lbs. 21 times LOL!

Feb-24-14  Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle> He can play football great the only question is, is he emotionally stable?
Feb-24-14  Jim Bartle: Well, then he sounds perfect for the Raiders.

Think of the tradition then: Ben Davidson, Otis Sistrunk, the Tooz, Alzado.

Feb-24-14  Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle> With those freak athletic abilities as a GM I'd have to take him.

Phony Benoni: Travis, at 266 lbs. he sounds a little small for the line and a little big for linebacker. Maybe the Lions will draft him and turn him into a wide receiver.
Feb-24-14  Travis Bickle: Yeah like Super GM Matt Millen LOL!

Seriously the conditioning coach could put 10 to 15 pounds of muscle on that guy and he would be great in a 3 4 defense! The late Derrick Thomas of K.C. wasn't all that big and man did he have the sacks off the edge!

Feb-25-14  hangingenprise: phony: the lions may go after sammy w if he is there. when mega tron was out the lions were more than woeful they were pitiful. your pal travis bears will go defensive line.
