Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Aug-11-15  Jim Bartle: Jints are lousy in odd years, great in even, going back to 2010.

I remember in 1967 the Giants were desperately trying to stay in contention. The Cubs came to town and won 9-0 in the first game of a doubleheader (against Perry) and then 3-2 in the ninth in the second game.

My dad said, they're finished, losing both ways in one day. Sure enough, they lost the series final and went into a killer slump which included losing another 3 of 4 to the Cubs.

Now wait. That sounds like there were 15-0 days with less than 15 games.

Aug-12-15  Jim Bartle: Until 1961 15 games in a day would have required 7 doubleheaders and only 1 single game.

Phony Benoni: If the home teams had never gone 15-0, it would seen the odds would be astronomical against the visiting team doing it. And yet, the home field advantage in baseball is not as great as you might think. In this article:

http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...

It's cacluated at .537 over the last five years, which is roughly comparable to White's advantage in a game of chess. Contrast that with pro football, where good teams routinely win nearly all their home games.

I mentioned earlier a little dice baseball game I've been dabbling at now and then. After 180 games, it's about 53-47 for the home team, which is very close to reality the last five years. Apparently, the advantage of "last bats" is not that great.

Batting last is one of the few structural advantages in favor of the home team. In hockey home teams have the privilege of making the last change, meaning they can dictate the match-ups. But I don't know of such an advantage in football, outside of crowd noise.

Penguincw: Interesting. According to a Wikipedia article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extra...), home teams win about 54% of the time, unless it's extra innings (then it's 52%). 3 games went into extra innings, so that would be about 0.00008644% chance of that happening yesterday.

< In hockey home teams have the privilege of making the last change, meaning they can dictate the match-ups. >

This one I hear all the time, but I have no idea what it means. I thought in the NHL, you can make a line change whenever you want (unless it's icing)?

BTW: I'm viewing the MLB site right now, and apparently the only game listed is BAL-SEA. Is that some kind of glitch?

Aug-12-15  Jim Bartle: Not just batting last, but stadiums are different and teams can tailor rosters to take advantage.

WannaBe: <Viewing every game as a 50-50 proposition independent of all others, STATS figured the odds of a home sweep on a night with a full 15-game major league schedule at 1 in 32,768 -- or about once every 80 years, according to Louis Mittel, a a doctoral candidate in statistics at Columbia University.>

I'm clearing my 2095 calendar just for the potential next "Haleys Comet" =))

<The last time home clubs went undefeated on a day with more than one game was Aug. 28, 2008, when they posted an 8-0 record. More recently, on April, 2, 2013, road squads went 7-0, according to STATS.>
