Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

  Phony Benoni: Dear Mr. Ditka,

Believe me, sir, I would never try to mess with you. Never, never, never. I mean, if Harry Carey showed up with blood in his eye, I'd just buy him a Bud and in no time we'd be the best of friends. If I tried that with you, the glass would be upside down with my head inside, and I'd wind up looking like my avatar.

But, with the deepest respect, I would only point out that it might be a matter for regret later on if you deflate the golf balls.

Learn to relax. 5¢, please.

WannaBe: Remember that post I wrote about 2 years ago that showed AL have more no-nos since the introduction of DH. And one of the theory thrown around was that AL pitchers don't hit or run bases...

To throw an interesting fact into the fray:

Iwakuma's no-no ended a string of 12 no-nos by NL pitchers! The last AL pitcher to throw a no-no? Felix Hernandez of the Mariners. (Perfecto)

Penguincw: YES! The Blue Jays score 10 runs to extend their winning streak to 10 games! 10-3 TOR is the final. With this win, there is a tie for the AL East. The Blue Jays are tied for the AL East for the first time since April 23rd.

Meanwhile, NYY trails CLE 2-1, bottom of the 8th.

Say, when was the last time a team had 2 separate 10+ game winning streaks in the same season?

Regarding the no-hitter, I find the dates of the 2 Seattle no-hitters interesting:

- Aug 1<5>, 201<2>

- Aug 1<2>, 201<5>

Aug-12-15  Travis Bickle: Cubs catcher Montero put 1 in the cheap seats to beat Milwaukee 3-2 in the bottom of the the tenth!! Holy Cow!!
Aug-12-15  Travis Bickle: <Phony Benoni: ... Dear Mr. Ditka, Learn to relax. 5¢, please.>

Sorry Phony if I was a little high strung earlier, but that homerune in the 10th was a beautiful thing! ; P

WannaBe: Up next for Toronto, Yankees! Wheeeeeeee! Gonna be a great weekend series.

What would make TV & MLB Executives drool:

Cubs vs anyone in the World Series, and the always quotable Manager Maddon.

What would make TV & MLB Executives cringe in fear and weep like a baby:

Toronto vs anyone. Plus NHL starts Oct, which means more Torontoans will be watch Leafs than Jays.

I like the idea! We can also shorten the schedule, so the World Series will not interfere with Christmas:

15 NL teams, and 15 AL teams.

6 games in your league/team 3 road, 3 home, 4 games vs teams in the other league, 2 road, 2 home.

4X15 + 6X14 voila!! 144 games. World Series don't have to be dragged out until Boxing Day.

And if you live in LA and that only trip SF comes to town? Sell out. Cubs fans want to boo StL? Sell out. Yankee fans want to make fun of Pablo Sandaval? Sell out. Twins fans want to see tractor pulls? Sell out.

  Penguincw: <WannaBe>

I like the idea as well. If I may suggest a slight improvement, I'd like 2 extra games/division rival (so a 152 game schedule in total).

This solution addresses the issue of unbalanced schedules and also a long season.

The other main issue in baseball is the playoffs. Honestly, after a long, grueling 140+ game season, just 10 teams make it?!

What I'd like is there to have 8 teams/league make it: 3 division winners and 5 wild cards. They will all be ordered by record, and face each other off. I'm not sure if the bracket is fixed or not. So if the postseason began right now, here are the matchups:

ALWCS
1) KC - MIN
2) TOR - BAL
3) NYY - TB
4) HOU - LAA

(all divisional matchups)

NLWCS
1) STL - ARI
2) PIT - WSH
3) CHC - SFG
4) LAD - NYM

(no divisional matchups)

And whose to say there can't be AL vs. NL in the first round? It's not like the NBA or NHL, where jet fuel can be saved.

Your thoughts guys?

Aug-13-15  Jim Bartle: My thought:

Eliminate six teams. Form four six-team divisions. The division winners in each league play a best-of-seven, winner going to the World Series.

It just might work.

WannaBe: This new PAT rule, we're gonna see some really interesting football strategy and scores...
Aug-13-15  Travis Bickle: Yo Phony in today's Cubs game I seen a real rarity... The Cubs hit back to back to back homeruns!

Fowler, Rizzo & Then "Babe Kyle Schwarber Ruth" hit em out.

https://www.google.com/webhp?source...

Tell me I'm wrong but the last time I seen that done by The Cubs was in the '60's when Williams Santo & Banks all homered back to back.

Penguincw: This just in: the Yankees won, and are now (more like remain) just a half game behind the Jays. The winner of this huge 3-game set will emerge as the leader of the division.

Phony Benoni: Lions sucker punch Jets, 23-3. Yeah, the Super Bowl is the light at the end of the tunnel.

Miguel Cabrera scheduled to return tomorrow. Boy, just watch that 13½ game lead change now. If the '51 Giants can do it, why not the Tigers.

We're Detroiters. We're used to finding hope where there is none.

(By the way, Cabrera should be able to pick up enough plate appearances to quality for the batting title. Whrehere he'll be effective is another matter. No more cheap infield hits for him this year.)

Phony Benoni: Travis, there is definitely some magic out there this year.
Aug-13-15  Jim Bartle: SI has an article called "Legacy of Mickey Mantle, last great player on the last great team."

What a joke. No great teams since 1964? No great Yankees since 1964?

Aug-13-15  Jim Bartle: On this play, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pb7..., Rizzo makes the catch falling into the stands and lands right next to a guy wearing a Rizzo jersey and a Cubs cap.

They should have switched places and had the fan run back on the field.
