Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

WannaBe: <JB> Whachatalkinabout? Every stadium now have WiFi, so you can send that selfie to Facebook and Linkin while a touchdown is being scored.

Game? What game? I paid $125 to be seen on Facebook!!

Sep-14-15  Jim Bartle: Did not know that. Just seems the stadium is too luxurious, made for Silicon Valley fans.

WannaBe: <JB> Seats are $$$$$, wait, I better add another $ or $$. Quite a few season tix holders did not renew, because of the driving distance, the deposit, and the purchase "privilege".

http://www.sfgate.com/49ers/ostler/...

Article from 2012, before 49ers left Candlestick.

Sep-14-15  Jim Bartle: I think I read that same article when it came out. A lot of longtime fans won't be able to go.

For such a distinguished team the 49ers have never had a great stadium. Candlestick was drab at best, and before that Kezar (in Golden Gate Park) was a dump, but with a certain charm. Also the only place I ever saw them play, in an exhibition game.

Penguincw: Toronto loses 3-2 in Atlanta, while the Rays hang on 6-3 to beat the Yankees. So, division lead remains at 3 games, with 18 to go.

Hoping Detroit can hang on to that 4-1 lead over Minnesota.

Phony Benoni: Texas walk-offs Houston, takes over first place by a half-game.

St. Louis is the first team to 90 wins, and reduces their play-off magic number to 4 as Giants finally lose a game.

San Diego eliminated tonight with a loss to Arizona. Detroit is eliminated in the division race.

Fusilli: <keypusher> etsy.com specializes in vintage items. It may be a more suitable option than eBay for this.

Would this help:

WannaBe: Wow, I can't wait for Saturday!!

#18 Auburn at #13 LSU. Cheerleaders for Auburn will hold up cards that spell out S-A-T, while cheerleaders for LSU will hold up cards that spell out A-C-T. (or C-A-T...)

#23 Northwestern at Duke. Duke cheerleaders will yell: "My team's got higher SAT score than your team!", while N'Western cheerleaders will yell: "We have more Nobel Prize Winners!"

Both team have no sideline medical personnel, because the players diagnose themselves and perform onsite operations.

When they huddle, Duke players discuss the impending monetary policy of the Fed's interest rate hike, while N'Western players discuss the failure of Greece and Eurozone bail out, and how the far left failed the Greek population.

#14 Georgia Tech at #8 Notre Dame. Stanford at #6 USC, after playing 2 cupcakes (Arkansas St & Idaho) USC will have third consecutive game at home to start the 2015 season.

#19 BYU at #10 Ucla. Stormin' Mormans invades Pasadena to give Ucla a real test on the field. (Ucla hosted Virginia, then traveled to UNLV)

We also have these games, or what I call "How Much Did You Get Paid" to play games:

Nevada U./#17 Texas A&M, Georgia State/#12 Oregon, Northern Illinois/#1 Ohio State, Univ. Texas at San Antonio/#25 Oklahoma St., and finally Northern Arizona Univ/#20 Arizona

(Hey, at least the Lumberjacks get to go back home and sleep in their own bed!!)

Phony Benoni: Texas playing like they mean to stay in first place, us 14-3 vs. Houston.

Large number of lopsided games tonight.

Cubs blew 2-1 lead in the 9th against Pittsburgh; now in extras.

Tigers holding on 2-1, but had to go to the bullpen in the fourth inning. Rookie starter returning from injury didn't get far.

<The Sept. 22-25, 2016 World Baseball Classic qualifier at MCU Park in Brooklyn will include Brazil, Great Britain, Israel and Pakistan.>

When GB plays Pakistan, they will be allowed to use a special "flatter" bat, and instead of pitcher, they will be allowed to use a "bowler". =))

Phony Benoni: Looks like one of those September games where the pitchers' portion of the box score has more entries than the hitters' portion.

And the Twins went twelve innings against the Tigers last night! They may have to bring in Blyleven from the broadcast booth.

Penguincw: Toronto gains a half game on the idle Yankees, as they win 5-0. The lead is up to 3.5 games. Current list of Toronto's magic numbers:

- To make postseason: 9

- To clinch at least one postseason game at home: 10

- To clinch the division: 14

- To clinch home field advantage in the ALDS: 12

- To clinch the top seed in the AL: 19

Tomorrow, Toronto plays the last place Red Sox, while the Yankees visit the first place Mets. The Jays need to take advantage of their opportunities.

BTW: I heard ex-president Jimmy Carter visited the TOR-ATL game. In Canada, there's an election coming up in a month, and when the 3 main party leaders visited, the Jays lost all 3 times.

Moral: If politicians want to see their favourite team win, they should watch on TV or something, not see them at the ball park.

Phony Benoni: If the Twins hang on and lose, Toronto's playoff magic number will be eight with sixteen games left to play. That seems a significant number to me.

When a team's magic number is half the number of games remaining, simply playing .500 baseball means their pursuer will have to win every game to catch up. In other words, barring collapse, they're in very good shape.

Other teams in this 50% bracket are Kansas City (DIV and WC 7 with 16 games left), and St. Louis, who are at 2 to clinch a wild card.

On the other side, Oakland (WC 2), Arizona (DIV 2, WC 1) and San Diego (DIV 1) will all most likely be out in a day or two. After that, it will be a few more days before future action.
