Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

OhioChessFan: The iPad guy and ilk drive me crazy. I can't believe people do it. You can go ANYWHERE in the world and stare at a screen for 3 hours. Why, exactly, do they choose to do so at major sporting events? I saw a guy in the front row of a Reds game this year who apparently never looked up the whole game. The screen potatoes have taken up the mantle of Most Annoying Background Visual from the idiots who call all their friends and tell them to look at them waving like an idiot on TV.

WannaBe: Quick, someone hire Pentland! Because all ex-hitting coaches from NYY will lead you to the play-offs!

http://espn.go.com/newyork/mlb/stor...

Also, this is the third time that NYM have led a series 2-0, the previous two times, they've gone on to win the series.

WannaBe: So... Blue Jays have acquired ambidextrous pitcher Venditte off waivers (A's). He is not eligible for this year's post-season play.

Is the roof going to be open to closed??

WannaBe: [This post is edited, I had flaw in the previous version, where the winning was 'guaranteed', which it was not.]

The line is now Toronto -143, O/U is the same, at 8 runs.

Penguincw: 2 big events going on in Canada tonight: the federal election, and the Blue Jays game.

Quick comment about the federal election: I'm not the biggest follower of politics, but looking at the current count, the Liberals have 33 seats, while the other parties <combined> have <ZERO>. :| (probably wrong page to post it on)

As for the Jays game, Jays lead 6-2! :)

Phony Benoni: On a ore serious note: Daniel Norris, part of the Tigers / Blue Jays trade for David Price, will have off-season surgery for thyroid cancer. He's expected to be ready for spring training.

He knew about this before the trade but chose to delay the surgery. Apparently, the teams knew as well.

Penguincw: (my apologizes for the political comments)

Okay, the Jays lead 11-4, but surrendered a 4-run 9th, to win it 11-8. A win is a win, but this can't happen again in the future!

And yes, it's good to return to Rogers Centre. :)

In Toronto's ALDS, the road team won every game except for the last one. I hope here, the home team wins every game, except for the last one.

And reminder this is the 30 year anniversary since the 1985 TOR-KC ALCS, where Toronto had a 3-1 series lead, and lost the next 3 games. And then the Royals got lucky vs. the Cardinals in G6 of the WS, and won it in 7...

WannaBe: Week 6 Road Team Two Time Zones or More Results (RTTTZMR)

We had 5 games that had team traveling two time zones or more, here are the results:

<LOST> Arizona @ Pittsburgh

<WON> Denver @ Cleveland (But boy, that was close...)

<WON> Carolina @ Seattle (But boy, Panthers had pull out a miracle...)

<LOST> San Diego @ Green Bay

<LOST> Baltimore @ San Francisco

Thanks to the two close games, the home team could have gone 5-0, but alas... This brings the running total to 8-18 when a team have to travel 'far'.

While the rest of the league's road teams did a very respectable 4-5 on the road, and that brings the running total to 33-32.

For week 7, two teams will travel to London, since they are from the same time zone, it will just count as a 'regular game', as far as this little record keeping experiment goes.

We only have one game that involves RTTTZMR, and that is the Monday Night's Baltimore @ Arizona game. Since Baltimore just played at San Francisco, I don't know if the team went home, and then fly back out, or they just stayed at the West Coast. As some teams have started doing.

WannaBe: Just wanna take a quick break from baseball talk and look at Stanford's remaining schedule:

http://espn.go.com/college-football...

It is possible for Stanford to face Cal @ Palo Alto, The Big Game, and both team have only 1 loss. How 'bout that!?

Then Stanford will play Notre Dame, and then possibly face Utah at Levi Stadium for the Pac-12 Championship (Short 20 minutes drive away).

I've just invested in 2 Cal/Stanford tix, hoping both team will win (out)!

Now back to your regularly scheduled bees-ball talk.

WannaBe: 4-0 already. Dickey looks dicey...
Oct-20-15  Jim Bartle: Both teams have histories of surprising bad losses, but it could happen. Cal has a great qb.

It's been forever since Cal-Stanford winner determines the champion. In fact I can't remember it ever happening.

Hey, <Jim Bartle>, you wanna buy 2 Cal/Stanford football tix from me? (Re) sell them to ya. Cheap! =))

Oct-20-15  Jim Bartle: I have free tickets waiting for me if I could only make it.

I seriously doubt Stanford will make it to the Bowls without another loss.

WannaBe: Why is that, after someone gets caught stealing, the next batter always get a hit??
Oct-20-15  Jim Bartle: Schwarber reminds me of a slow-pitch softball slugger. He's so strong, he just poked at that ball on the outside and drove it well over the wall. Incredible.

This umpire needs to go back and study anatomy, learn where the knees are located. Man, he calls them low.
