Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Nov-01-15  Jim Bartle: Boras should talk to his client, who apparently demanded to go out for the ninth. He even made a big show of it, waiting and waiting and then finally sprinting out to the mound. Clearly milking the moment for applause.

WannaBe: I will say this, even before this game 5 is over and final score unknown...

Collins blew it. You have a pitcher who's on "pitch count limit" and all the hubbub that went with it.

You have 2-0 lead, this is Harvey, not Greinke, not Kershaw, not Hershisher. He is ON PITCH COUNT!!!

AND YOU LET HIM PITCH?!!? After all the s*** his agent brought up even before play-off started?

Then you bring in Familia, so he can be recorded as another blown save??

Excuse me, sorry, let me add a few more ??????????????

WannaBe: In other news, Denver will remain undefeated, as Broncos lead Green Bay 29-10 with 1:00 left in 4th Qtr.

I just hope the young man Familia is not psychologically affected, a la Donnie Moore.

Nov-01-15  Jim Bartle: <I just hope the young man Familia is not psychologically affected, a la Donnie Moore.>

Bob Stanley and Calvin Schiraldi seem to have dealt with it with little problem.

WannaBe: Did Stanley and Schiraldi have social media? All the texts and tweets that will come if NYM fails to win?

Imagine what it would be like if Bill Buckner's E3 happened in 2012, or 2013, or 2014.

We now live in an age where young kids gets nasty tweets or posts because a punt was blocked (all his fault, of course) and it was returned for a miracle win, or young kids kill themselves because of bullying, go off the wall because they are lone(r) and have no friends.

Let me ask you this: Do you know this young man Familia well enough to know how he will handle this?

Again, <I just hope the young man Familia is not psychologically affected...>

If you wish to continue this line of thought, please post on my forum. Thank you.

By the time I typed and edited this post, the ESPN announcers made the comment that it's not Familia's fault, it was a difficult situation.

But I just hope the general public understand that... Sheeeesh, people were ready to hang Buckner and Steve Bartman, even though the teams had plenty of chances to win it after their 'mistake'.

Nov-02-15  Jim Bartle: Damn, good point.

I don't know anything about Familia. But he didn't pitch badly. He came in with two on and nobody out, then pitched a perfect tenth.

In any case, he's going to be forgotten in the disaster of the 12th.

And, Christian Colon?

WannaBe: I want to be R. Mondesi (Junior), I think he had one AB and is part of World Series Championship Team.

Even thought he was just signed from AA to be on the team about 9 days ago.

That ring he's gonna get will be costly, (ring is paid for by the team, but you get charged for taxes on the worth of the ring, think of it as getting a bonus, but the taxes aren't taken out in the check.)

Can't imagine what his tax bill will look like.

"Hey, congratulations on winning the World Series and getting $50,000 diamond studded 18K gold ring, now pay Uncle Sam!"

  WannaBe: Week 8 for RTTTZMR!!

<WON> Arizona @ Cleveland

<LOST> San Francisco @ St. Louis

<LOST> San Diego @ Baltimore

<LOST> New York Jets @ Oakland

<WON> Seattle @ Dallas

Seriously now, Dallas had Seattle on the ropes, I "loved" how Cowboys played prevent defence last 4 minutes of the game while Seattle was marching down the field. Arizona held Cleveland scoreless in the second half, while scored 24-pts to win by 14.

So, this brings the running total to 10-22 a bit under 1/3

While the rest of the league's road teams went 3-6 in week 8, that will bring the running total to 41-46, just a bit under 1/2

For week 9 we have the following teams that will travel two time zones or more:

<???> Oakland @ Pittsburgh

<???> Atlanta @ San Francisco

<???> Denver @ Indianapolis

<???> Chicago @ San Diego (Monday Night, featuring two teams combined for 4-wins. YIKES!!)

Phony Benoni: <Tabanus> Thanks for noticing; it's something I'm aware of.

I'm in the habit of submitting large groups of games, and sometimes the early ones are added before I finish. I should be done with this batch by the end of the week and will begin updating the collections then.

Nov-03-15  Jim Bartle: Rules question: How late can a batter swing and still have a strike called?

The situation I imagine is a wild pitch with two strikes. If the batter sees the ball get by the catcher can he just swing and start running to first? Presumably he can't do it when the ball is at the backstop, but how late is the swing called a strike?

Nov-03-15  YouRang: <Jim Bartle> My guess:

Once the ump has called the pitch "ball" or "strike", it doesn't matter if the batter swings or not.

So, if a wild pitch is made, and the ump calls "ball", it's too late to swing in hopes of changing the call to a strike.

Good question. While on that topic, how <far> can a pitch be, and still count as a ball or strike? Obviously, a pickoff doesn't count, but what if it's like this (like the one by 50 cent):

WannaBe: How much have sports 'coverage' changed...

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...

1. You are a reporter, if you wish to report that Kap like to mimic kissing his muscular arm after a TD, fine.

You wish to report that Kap have Biblical passages tattooed on his arm, fine.

You wish to report that Kap goes to church 8 days a week, fine.

You wish to report that Kap donates 20% of his earnings to the church, fine.

2. You do not write articles that so-and-so is arrogant & rude. You are not Ms. Manners.

No where does it say, that any athlete have to be polite to you.

You are an adult, you still have not gotten used to rejections and/or failures?

3. Just my 10 cents. Inflation, you know.

Nov-04-15  Jim Bartle: That's the sort of columnist Lowell Cohn is. Very combative and opinionated.

It's funny. He was my roommate for a year in college, and he showed very little interest in sports.

From his column:

<Benched.

Second banana.

The guy who holds the clipboard.

Colin Kaepernick, the once and no-more starting quarterback of the 49ers got shoved to the side, according to reports. He now is benched, irrelevant, history. Almost certainly gone by the end of this season. The understudy to Blaine Gabbert.

Come again?>

WannaBe: You can't blame the NFL schedule maker(s), but it's 'funny' that Green Bay will face undefeated teams back-to-back on the road.

Last week @DEN, and this week @CAR

But GB's schedule do get a little easier after @CAR, DET, @MIN, CHI, @DET, DAL then @OAK, @ARZ, finish the season with MIN at home.

If you count game 1 @CHI, GB would have faced 3 undefeated teams. All on the road. Maybe GB should file a complaint with NFL for unfair scheduling. =))
