 | | Phony Benoni: Last week, the Lions fired three assistant coaches. Today, they fired the Team President and the General Manager. Fans complain that they still need to fired: a) Head Coach
b) Quarterback
c) Owners
Maybe the Lions will wind up in Los Angeles. |

 | | Phony Benoni: <Tabanus> the 1974 and 1975 annual rating lists confirm <Roger> Neustaedter. The USCF Member Services Area gives <Roger E Neustaedter>: http://www.uschess.org/msa/MbrDtlMa...
With his birthdate knonw, the rest looks reliable of reliability. Possibly a personal communication. I had given up deep researching in the rating supplements during the 1960s when only initials were given, but those from 1974 and 1975 have full names and probably worth some work. Also, the USCF MSA area dates from 1991, so as I get into the 1970s I'lll need to check that regularly. |

 | | WannaBe: Super easy trivia.
On this day Nov. 6th 1974 I became the first reliever ever to win the Cy Young Award. Who am I? |
|
| Nov-06-15 | | Jim Bartle: Also won the Goat Horns Award in the World Series. |

My guess was actually Rollie Fingers, but looking on Wikipedia, it was by Mike Marshall (way too far back for me). However, I see that year, Fingers was an All-Star, World Series Champion and MVP, and was =5th in the league in saves, so it wasn't an uneducated guess. :) |
|
| Nov-06-15 | | Jim Bartle: Marshall pitched in over 100 games that year, and threw more than 200 innings. He finished more than 80 games, which might be a record. In the 5th game of the World Series Oakland fans starting throwing stuff at LA leftfielder Bill Buckner. There was a delay of maybe ten minutes, Alston coming out, and Marshall went out to argue as well. He didn't take any warmup throws, so hitter Joe Rudi figured the first pitch would be a fastball. He was right and Rudi hit it out for the game-winning homer. I believe he also put an end to Charlie Finley's (actually reasonable) idea of keeping an Olympic sprinter on the team to pinch run. Marshall froze Herb Washington on first and then picked him off easily. |
|
| Nov-07-15 | | playground player: Marshall's 1974 achievements were spectacular, and he didn't burn out, either, like Jim Konstanty after 1950. In the off-season Marshall used to make a pest of himself at Michigan State University, trying to monopolize some of the gym facilities. He had a degree in kinesiology (sp?) and his excuse was he needed to have these areas all to himself for research. |
|
| Nov-07-15 | | Jim Bartle: Sounds like a great guy. Someone should have asked him why he didn't take a few warmups before pitching to Rudi. He pitched in a time before this "one-inning" policy for closers. I wonder how much he could have pitched under that method. |

 | | Tabanus: Greetings from Norway!
I've done my best with R Ledesma and R Ramirez, but no .. perhaps if El Mundo (Puerto Rico) 1965 was online. |

 | | Phony Benoni: <Tabanus> USCF rating lists for 1974 and 1975 give <Rafael Ramirez> from Puerto Rico. But that's a decade later and the name is obviously very common. I've accepted that many of Puerto Ricans from San Juan 1965 may never be untangled. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Having being fired by the second-worst run organization in the country, former Lions executives Tom Lahwon and Martin Mayhew have only one place to go. Look for them at the next Presidential debate. |

 | | WannaBe: Will the debate be aired on ESPN5, C-SPAN4 or HGTV? |
|
| Nov-08-15 | | Jim Bartle: Atlanta has 4th down on the two, 3 minutes left, trailing 17-13. And they kick a field goal? That doesn't make sense to me. |
|
Nov-08-15
 | | WannaBe: Easterbrook calls that the "safe" play by a coach. If you gone for it and failed, coach get blamed. Defense couln't stop 49ers on the following drive, so it's the players, or DC fault. |
|
| Nov-08-15 | | Jim Bartle: Easterbrook never wants to punt or kick a field goal. Or not often. |
|
| Nov-08-15 | | Jim Bartle: This is still bugging me. Let's analyse in a very general way: Chance of scoring on 4th down from the 2: 70%. Is that OK? Chance of stopping 49ers from getting FG after scoring a TD, 2 minutes left: 60%. Chance of stopping the 49ers with 0 or 1 first downs: 50%. Chance of scoring field goal after taking over with one minute left. Of course it depends how far they have to go, but let's say 65%. So, going for it gives 42% chance of winning (and not winning a large possibility is a tie with a Niner FG). Kicking the FG and hoping to kick another: 32%. |
|
Nov-08-15
 | | WannaBe: Easterbrook have always been in favour of going for it, especially that late in the game (with 2 time outs, as I went to the water-hole to watch the 4th qtr). Let's just say in general (and throw out the percentage numbers...) Scenario 1: You score a TD, kicks the PAT, 20-17. You look <GOLDEN> Scenario 2: You turn the ball over, 49ers' possession, first down and 10 from own 2-yard line. QB now only have 12 yards to play with, pretty much any time he is sacked, it's a safety. Anytime there is an offensive holding in the end-zone, it's a safety. If you want to power-run the football to gain a few breathing yards, and the ball is stuffed in the end zone? <SAFETY> If, <IF> you are able to hold 49ers to 3 and out, (let's say Niners gained 9 yards), the ball is on the 11-yard line. Bad snap, shanked punt, blocked punt for safety, or TD... I am sure Easterbrook will cover this Tuesday, in his Tuesday Morning Quarterback (TMQ). It's very, very befuddling strategy. With today's OAK/PIT game, Pittsburgh have gone for 2 after a (first) TD more than any other team. This is very similar to what Oregon U. did. You just scored, plenty of time to catch up and decide on strategy, go for 2. What the heck. Easterbrook often cite situations where it's 4th and 1, or two, and the ball is on the 45 yard line (going into score), and the team punt!? Okay, 63-yard field goal is probably out of the question, but how often do you coffin nail it? (Especially at college level) His argument is, go for it! |
|
| Nov-08-15 | | Jim Bartle: I do remember Easterbrook said always go for it on fourth down between the opponent's 35 and 45 or something like that. Too far for a good chance at a FG, and a punt likely won't gain that many yards. I don't agree with Easterbrook all the time, but he's always interesting and entertaining. And he doesn't go on and on about the brilliance of assistant coaches, which drives me nuts. Writers who do that are usually showing off or sucking up to those coaches. Do we agree that Atlanta was really conservative to take the FG? |
|
| Nov-08-15 | | Jim Bartle: By the way, even with the loss the Raiders looked really good today. They had the two terrible turnovers (fumble on kickoff, interception in the end zone) and still almost won. Carr isn't the new Stabler, but he'll do until one arrives. |
