Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

WannaBe: <Jim Bartle: ...Do we agree that Atlanta was really conservative to take the FG?>

I remember sitting at the pub, sipping my Pale Ale, and thinkin', that's a wrong call. Not a 'bad' call, just wrong.

Rush Limbaugh just called, he said it was too conservative, even for him.

Nov-08-15  Jim Bartle: Your theory is proven!

And you know what, all three games were extremely close, when home field could have provided the edge needed to win.

WannaBe: 2016 Hall of Fame ballot have been announced:

Garret Anderson, Brad Ausmus, Jeff Bagwell, Barry Bonds, Luis Castillo, Roger Clemens, David Eckstein, Jim Edmonds, Nomar Garciaparra, Troy Glaus, Ken Griffey Jr., Mark Grudzielanek, Mike Hampton, Trevor Hoffman, Jason Kendall, Jeff Kent, Mike Lowell, Edgar Martinez, Fred McGriff, Mark McGwire, Mike Mussina, Mike Piazza, Tim Raines, Curt Schilling, Gary Sheffield, Lee Smith, Sammy Sosa, Mike Sweeney, Alan Trammell, Billy Wagner, Larry Walker, Randy Winn.

Nov-09-15  Jim Bartle: Right, agree with the article about the Atlanta decision.
Nov-09-15  Jim Bartle: All right, Brad Ausmus, first ballot!

Looks like Griffey is the only sure thing.

I think Raines and Piazza also belong, maybe Trammell and Bagwell. Garciaparra's career as a great was too short, plus big steroid suspicions. Mussina had 270 wins but his ERA was never below 3.00 after his second year, which surprises me.

There are Bonds, Clemens, McGwire and Sosa who are obviously qualified by their records, but tainted by drugs.

A lot of shoo-in candidates for the Hall of Very Good.

perfidious: My votes for HOF '16 go to:

Griffey: Mortal lock.

Nuff ced.

Bagwell: Had he played in another epoch, would already have got there; for his numbers leave no doubt whatever.

Piazza: Greatest hitting catcher of all time.

Trammell: Has not done at all well in HOF balloting and I have never understood why.

It is true that Trammell was never as good defensively as Ozzie Smith (an impossible standard for ordinary mortals), but he was more than adequate, and far better with the lumber in hand than Ozzie. Should already have made it in.

Raines: Another player who is a no-doubter for me, but suffered by comparison as a leadoff hitter with the incomparable Rickey Henderson and Paul Molitor. One terrific player whose shortcoming seems to have been not posting eye-popping numbers in categories other than stolen bases.

As <Jim> noted, a lot of good, but not great careers on the board.

Nov-09-15  Jim Bartle: I'll say this: A team made up of the players on that list with no chance of making the HOF would still win the pennant every year.

OK, Trammell wasn't a Wizard like Ozzie, but he was a good shortstop. How many more runs would Ozzie save compared to Trammell in a year? One run every three games? Every five games?

Raines had a lifetime OBP of .390 over twenty years. That's eyepopping enough for me.

In 1987, for example, he put himself in scoring postion (or scored) on his own 130 times. Extraordinary. (Might be a bit high, as it counts steals of third.)

Despite his stature, Bill James remained a geek around good players, as he freely admitted. He said once he was helping Raines with his arbitration hearing and there was a break.

James headed straight to the bathroom, and Raines came in to the urinal next to him a minute later. James said, "Now I can tell my kids I beat Tim Raines in a footrace." And Raines couldn't stop laughing.

Gotta be starstruck to tell that story.

I was twice named AP Comeback Player of the year, first time with New York Jets, and two years later with Miami Dolphins.

<ESPN Monday Night

Cutler has the MOST game-winning TD passes in the 4th quarter since 2009. (12)>

Makes me wonder how many third quarter game winning TD passes Cutler have, or second quarter game winning TD passes...

I guess that's why he will be (guaranteed) first ballot HoF when he retires. Jeeeeeeeeeeze. Please give me a freakin' break, here.

Penguincw: R.I.P. Tommy Hanson. He pitched 5 seasons with the Angels and Braves, but he's with the real Angels now.
Nov-10-15  Jim Bartle: Last night Steph Curry took the ball after a Pistons basket, and tossed it to a teammate who didn't see it.

The ball bounced off the guy into the court, and Curry picked it up and dribbled down the court.

Maybe the refs didn't see it or they just said what the heck.

But I can't believe that was legal. What if the ball had bounced to an opposing player? The Warriors would have screamed it was not an inbounds pass.

WannaBe: <Jim Bartle> Perfectly legal, even if the ball bounced off an opposing player.

If you are guarding the inbound man, you are always told to not take your eyes off him, in case he bounces one off you.

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/11/u...

Nov-10-15  Jim Bartle: No, <wb>, I didn't explain it correctly. Check the espn.com site, it was there.

Curry was inbounds after a basket. He tossed the ball to a teammate out of bounds who was going to inbound the ball. But that player was talking to the ref and didn't see the ball.

It hit off his body and bounced inbounds, where Curry picked it up and dribbled downcourt. That just cannot be legal.
