Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: <JB> The Lions have often proven capable of the impossible. I doubt there is a fan ib this city who thought Crosby would miss the field goal.
Nov-15-15  Jim Bartle: Maybe it's an illusion but Eli Manning has always looked like the luckiest QB ever with respect to his receivers.

It just seems they make incredible catches on bad throws or when well-covered, or take short passes and run wild, making a ten-yard pass look like an 80-yard bomb. Or catch the ball against the helmet.

Today his guys have made one spectacular catch after another, and Beckham took a fairly short pass 87 yards for a TD when the DB missed him.

Phony Benoni: <Tabanus> Edward Schrader was originally from St. Louis. His birth and death dates probably stem from Gaige ("Chess Personalia, p.379), but the only citation is a mention if BCM from 1935.

There is often confusion with his contemporary Eugene Wesley Shrader from nearby Moberly, Missouri, the names of both players often being misspelled. Generally, "Dr." refers to E. W. shrader.

OhioChessFan: I simply can't believe how the Giants gave that game away. The idiot announcers couldn't decide for sure if they should have run the ball?! Seriously? Unbelievable. Absolutely unbelievable.

WannaBe: So the next time Detroit wins in GB will be 2042?! Saw Spectre, missed football. Now watching the night game.
Nov-15-15  Jim Bartle: You missed a wild game between Giants and New England, then. Giants choked big time.

Phony Benoni: The Giants this year have been having trouble with what the commentators clal "situational football", mismanaging the ends of several games. And yet they still lead the division! There are going to be good teams staying home in January while the Last Team Standing in the NFC East and AFC South continue to play.

Tabanus: <PB> Thanks. There are three E. F. Schrader's in Los Angeles area in 1955 - incl. a Edw F Schrader Sr./Jr. pair living together in Compton! - so this one will probably take some time. Meanwhile, let's enjoy Edmund Erskine Hand (I'll post the evidence later) and Frederick Baldwin Arnold.
Nov-16-15  Jim Bartle: Beckham had that TD pass that probably would have won the game but instead of holding it to his chest he started to hold it out to celebrate and the DB knocked it away before he had completed the catch. Really bad, as Beckham admits.

WannaBe: Conspiracies abound, on whether Ditka's McD commercial (He wears Green Bay gears) have jinxed the Packers.

http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago-bea...

In completely unrelated news, there are no conspiracies as to what caused Cowboys to lose 7 in a row.

It was all Jessica Simpsons fault.

Nov-16-15  Deus Ex Alekhina: After what seems like a century, the namby pamby kitties, AKA The Detroit Lions, finally win on Lambeau Field, which has been their own personal hellhole, altho they tried to give it away.

I thought I was the only one who thought that was what happened. It still doesn't matter. Run the ball, run the clock, kick the field goal.

WannaBe: Week 10 update on RTTTZMR!!

<WON> Minnesota @ Oakland

The only game of the week that featured Two Time Zones or More, thus total for the season is now 12-25.

While the rest of the league's road team went an incredible 10-3!!! Wow. Included some big-big upsets, Detroit, Kansas City, Houston winning on Monday Night Snooze Fest.

Running total is now 54-55, just hair under 0.500 when a team travel one time zone, or no time change.

Week 11, we have the following:

<???> Oakland @ Detroit

<???> Kansas City @ San Diego

<???> Cincinnati @ Arizona

Phony Benoni: Thought: do teams who must regularly play with a two-hour time difference (e.g., St. Louis, Kansas City) have better results than teams sho do no? (e.g., Chicago, Minnesota)?

Corollary: Do Mountain/West tames, who must regularly play in the East, do better than East teams who only go West occasionally?

WannaBe: TMQ and the evolution of Tight Ends:

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/18/u...

And did you know, official footballs are call "The Duke"? No, not John Wayne.

Also discussed, the play selections of NY Giants on their final drive.

Nov-17-15  Jim Bartle: Easterbrook is exaggerating. There have always been great tight ends. First I remember was John Mackey of the Colts and Mike Ditka of the Bears. Then in the Bay Area the Niners had Ted Kwalick and Russ Francis among others, the Raiders had Ray Chester, the great Dave Casper, and Todd Christensen. I remember a tank for the NY Giants in the 80s, Mark Bavasi, an incredible player. Dallas has had one after the other. Denver had Shannon Sharpe. Too many to remember.

In college, a couple of years ago Stanford had three on the same team who are now in the NFL.

What I would think would be right up Easterbrook's alley is the question, if these guys are so unstoppable as tight ends, why not play them as wideouts as well?

WannaBe: <JB> I think you're missing Easterbrook's point of TEs being offensive weapon. Mackey (and I got to know him before he died) was a different era.

Mackey had 331 receptions, 5236 yards and 38 TDs. ('63-'72)

Ted Kwalik had 168 receptions, 2570 yards and 23 TDs.

Using Gronk as example, already 357 receptions, 5185 yards and 62 TDs. ('10-'15)

Phony Benoni: <JB> That was Mark Bavaro, wasn't it?

I had the distinct, er, experience of watching this great moment in Detroit Lions history:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gL2...

Nov-17-15  Jim Bartle: Bavaro, right. All least I didn't call him Buzzy.

Easterbrook also ridiculed the Lions for celebrating the win even though they are 2-7. I think any team has every right to celebrate any win, no matter how bad the record. Otherwise you're saying there's no reason to go see a losing team play.

Nov-17-15  Jim Bartle: <wb> I guess old memories can deceive.

<pb> Maybe the Lions were lulled to sleep by the sappy music on that play.

Nov-17-15  Deus Ex Alekhina: The Lions win at GB is most likely a sign of the apocalypse.
Nov-18-15  Jim Bartle: Here's a question:

Sterling is still suing to get the Clippers back.

Doesn't that in effect means he wants to buy the team for $2 billion? He doesn't own the team but has $2 billion. He is willing to give that money to someone to own the team.

That absolutely cannot be a pure business decision, emotions and pride come in.
