Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Tabanus: Stanley Eugene Epstein, but you had his first name already!

E F Schrader: Not sure how to proceed yet, but are there more than one E. F. Schrader in Chess Life, USCF lists (around 1955)? I suspect it's the old man!

WannaBe: <JB> Good question, let's look at some of the numbers:

http://www.forbes.com/pictures/mli4... lists LAC #5 in team value (2015) at 1.6B with Operating income of $20M

If Donald had parked his 2B in a certificate of deposit, and just for giggles, let's say the money earns 1%, it would be $20M

Current rate on 1-year CDs are 1.25% and 5-year jumbo are 2.25% http://www.bankrate.com/cd.aspx

Me, personally, I'd just park the money and enjoy life at $20M per year.

Nov-18-15  Jim Bartle: Women don't crawl all over you if you say, "Hey baby, I've got a billion-dollar CD paying 1.25%."

WannaBe: According to WannaBe Stats & Information Department, this is the first time a player named after a city have ever won the Cy Young & play in a rival city but in the same state.

News at 11.

WannaBe: Hey, <Phony Benoni>, wanna go to a football game this Sunday?

http://www.stubhub.com/detroit-lion...

I can catch a red-eye and meet you for a cup of coffee before the game!

Nov-18-15  Jim Bartle: Does the rival city have to have a major league team?
Nov-18-15  Jim Bartle: Because at a glance there's a Davis, California, a Clayton, California, and a Perry, Ohio.

  WannaBe: This day in history:

Some careless, thoughtless, fully-padded football player ran over an aspiring up and coming musician on the field, who was wearing no protections, at full speed!!

Nothing too much else happened.

WannaBe: Shucks, Florida won, on to Ucla@Utah game.
Nov-21-15  Jim Bartle: Oregon lost a couple of games early, including a close one at Michigan St., but they beat Stanford and today they're stomping on USC. They might be one of the best teams in the country right now, but they won't get the chance to prove it.

Beating highly-ranked Stanford might feel like payback, as Stanford beat them a couple of times when they were undefeated and in the top five.

WannaBe: Bruins escape Utah with a win, face that other school next week!
Nov-21-15  Jim Bartle: Ohio State beaten in last second by Michigan State . OSU gained only 130 yards in the entire game, they must be out of the national championship picture.

Phony Benoni: And Michigan State did it with two freshmen quarterbacks splitting time after their starter was unable to play.

Meanwhile, the Wolverines are royally bummed out. They needed OSU to win for a chance to at the Big Ten with a win over the Buckeyes next week. Very strange week around here.

WannaBe: MSU defeated both UM and OSU, so they own all tie-breakers. Even if MSU lose to Penn State next week. Maybe UM should stop calling them "Little Brothers" and quick pickin' on them.

Spartans could be undefeated, but someone decided to invite Nebraska into the conference. Brilliant idea. Tom Osborn be proud.

Quietly, Navy is on the radar for a New Year's Bowl berth. If they end up being the highest ranked Non-Power 5 conference, you can see them Mid Shipmen on January 1st.

How about that!? They have only one loss (To Notre Dame) and are in the drivers seat to win the American Athletic Conference!

WannaBe: Pac-12 South is a mess, or its a very tough conference/division.

All 3 of Ucla and Utah's loses are to fellow Pac-12 members. The winner of Ucla and that other school will be South Division Champ.

If Stanford wins tonight, they will be North Division Champs, lose and it's Oregon. (I don't think Ducks will lose to Beavers next week).

Stanford still have to play Notre Dame at home next weekend.

WannaBe: 7-3 Stanford... It's not as cold, yet as I expected it to be. Oh, wait, I am not at the game. =)

Me thinkth, I'll be put on "probation ignore" for a few hours tomorrow on this forum. =)
