 | | WannaBe: Another head rolled, Santa Clara 4th and 9ers fired their first year head coach. No truth to the rumours that ownership will go to Ann Arbor, MI and humbly grovel in front of Harbaugh on their hands and knees for him to return. Also no truth to the rumours that ownership will go to Palo Alto, CA and hubly grovel in front of David Shaw on their hands and knees for him to become a long tradition of Stanford coach that go on to the NFL ranks as a 49er. (Actually, if you read the contract that D. Shaw signed, on page 3,298, paragraph 3, it does say that Stanford head football coach have to become 49ers head coach... Just that no one told D. Shaw, yet...) |
|
| Jan-04-16 | | Jim Bartle: Stanford has sent several coaches straight to head coach in the NFL, not just to Stanford. Walsh and Harbaugh went to the Niners, and John Ralston went to Denver and Dennis Green to Minnesota. At least a coach moving from Stanford to the Niners doesn't have to buy a new house. Ty Willingham was an excellent coach, but didn't do real well after moving to Notre Dame. Somehow I don't see Shaw wanting to move to the NFL. |

 | | WannaBe: Update for week 17 of RTTTZMR!!
<LOST> Oakland @ Kansas City <LOST> St. Louis @ San Francisco In what possibly can be the final game as 'Oakland', Raiders lost on the road, also in what possibly can be final game as 'St. Louis', Rams also lost on the road. Funny thing, after 49ers won, they fired first year head coach... Talk about a short leash, sheesh! So, after 17 weeks of play, road teams what have to travel two time zones or more performed <23-38> for 0.377 mark. Meanwhile, rest of the league's road teams went 7-7 for week 17. Which will bring the total for the season to <98-97>, just a bit over the .500 mark. In the Wild Card weekend, there will be one game, which a team have to travel two time zones. <???> Seattle @ Minnesota Kansas City and Pittsburgh will take a short trip to Houston and Cincinnati, respectively, and Green Bay will visit Washington DC for their game. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Looking at Jim Caldwell here in Detroit -- whose job is probably safe pending the wishes of the incoming GM -- I've started thinking about something. In baseball, a "Bench Coach" has become the norm. The manager is the leader, handles the players, and makes the final decision, but the bench coach, often a older and wiser head, advises on general strategy. I'm thinking Cladwell might benefit from this. No one disputes that he is a fine leader and handler of players, but sometimes his game decisions are poor. Having a bench coach to advise him about strategy might be beneficial, but is there such a concept in football? I'm thinking of a more general role than that of a specialized coordinator. |

| Jan-04-16 | | Jim Bartle: A good point in all sports.
The man who is best at building a team and preparing it to play is not necessarily the best man to make in-game decisions. Bill James suggested that some major league managers should practice by playing hundreds of games of Stratomatic baseball. In particular he thought the Giants' Jim Davenport (this was a long time ago) was a good leader, good at building the team, but helpless at managing a game. He thought he would learn from Stratomatic. |

 | | OhioChessFan: My brother and I have discussed all year the incredible ineptitude of yead coaches regarding clock management in football. I know most NFL fans think their coach is the worst, but if you sat through a season of Marvin Lewis, you'd find out there's not a close contender for second worst. My brother's conclusion, one that I'm starting to agree with, is that a guy who is adept at running practices, calling plays, etc, really might not be good at all at handling clock issues. It seems so simple to me, but from Marvin and a lot of other coaches, it apparently doesn't come naturally to some people. I am not aware of a bench coach in football, but it might be a good idea. Most basketball teams have a designated assistant who keeps track of fouls and timeouts, so the idea isn't limited to only the slower pace of baseball. |

 | | WannaBe: Three NFL teams filed for relocation!!!
<Nick Wagoner
ESPN Staff Writer
On the first day the window was open, the St. Louis Rams did the expected and filed for relocation to Los Angeles. The Rams joined the Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers in filing on Monday. The Rams, of course, are attempting to build a nearly $2 billion NFL stadium in Inglewood, Calif. The league is hoping to make a decision at the next round NFL owners meetings in Houston on Jan. 12-13.> |
|
| Jan-05-16 | | Jim Bartle: Curious. All three of those teams have been based on LA before. |

 | | WannaBe: In honour of upcoming HoF announcement, I offer you this trivia question: J. Robinson had his number retired by all MLB teams, so (technically) he is the leader at 30-teams. One player had his number retired by 3 different teams, who is he? Seven players had their number retired by 2 different teams, who are they? <BONUS> Two managers had their number retired by 2 different teams, can you name them? |
|
| Jan-05-16 | | Jim Bartle: Tony LaRussa was a big success with Oakland and St. Louis, could be him. Sparky Anderson won World Series with two teams. I don't know about retired numbers for players. Nolan Ryan had several big years with Angels, Houston and Texas, so he's a possibility. |
|
Jan-05-16
 | | WannaBe: <JB> I'll give you credit for Sparky (2-teams, manager) and Nolan (3-teams, player). |
|
| Jan-05-16 | | Jim Bartle: Bobby Cox? Leo Durocher? Of course with him it might be his prisoner number. |
|
Jan-05-16
 | | WannaBe: <JB> I'll start giving some clues after the HoF announcement. Which I do believe is Wednesday at 6PM Eastern. This way some of the other members can take a crack (of the bat) at the question. =) |

 | | Phony Benoni: Garry Sheffield for sure. Once he left town, the team never wanted to see his number again. Maybe Casey Stengel as the manager. |

 | | WannaBe: Clue for Trivia, very general and vague clues.
Clue #1: All 7 of the players (that had their number retired by two different teams) are all still alive. Clue #2: Oldest of the 7 is 81-years young, and the youngest of the 7 is 49-years old. Answers: Nolan Ryan (3-teams retired his number) <Jim Bartle>. Stengel <Phony Benoni> & Sparky <JB> are the two managers who had their number retired by different teams. |
|
| Jan-06-16 | | Jim Bartle: On ESPN Kurtjian says Ken Griffey Jr. was clearly one of the five best centerfielders ever. Very likely true, but which one is he better than: Mays, Mantle, DiMaggio, Cobb or Speaker? |
|
Jan-06-16
 | | WannaBe: I don't see how Griffey Jr. is better than Jose Canseco, did Jr. have a ball bounce off his head for HR? Huh? Huh?? Canseco should be in the Hall. I'd vote for him... =)) |
