Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

   Jun-10-22 L T Magee vs E L Holland, 1948 (replies)

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

At least it's probably not going to matter that you got 9.5 points instead of ten.

OhioChessFan: I thought the spread was too much, also. I did think a blowout was possible, since MSU isn't built to come from behind. Dominant performace by Bama's defense.

For collections such as Game Collection: Puzzle of the Day 2016, how do you get the font to look like that (ex. the font for "Related collections")?

Thanks.

Phony Benoni: <Penguincw> It's just the regular gold text produced by bracketing. You can get it to appear that way only in collections, and sometimes it's a bit tricky to get it to work.

WannaBe: <keypusher> It's 7 now and 52.5, I'm hoping SEC doesn't win, otherwise they'd never shut up again.

Won a bet, OSU!!! =)

WannaBe: Let's see 31-20, need TCU to tie, go OT, teams to score, over 78. Piece of cake, while I'm at it, a couple of SuperLotto tix, too.

Phony Benoni: It's always a fourth quarter for the record books. It's not like they toss out some of the stats because the game was boring.

WannaBe: Okay, so Oregon's starting QB's out, but that doesn't explain how the defence is all of a sudden, in the second half collapsed.

Going back to last year's championship game, same thing in the second half, OSU just did whatever they wanted against the Ducks.

Puzzling. Well, the game is tied at 31, only need OT, and teams to score. Piece of rice cake.

And then I'm gonna go to the liquor store for some SuperMegaLottoMillionElGuapa tix.

WannaBe: If Denver wins, they have home field throughout, because Broncos defeated both NE and CIN at home.

NE have home field over CIN.

KC wins, they go to HOU, lose, I'm not sure. They'd be tied with PIT. But they did not play head to head.
