Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Jan-18-16  Jim Bartle: Jimmy Johnson is the only one I can think of. Dick Vermeil won the Rose Bowl with UCLA but I don't think they were ever ranked #1 at the end of a season.
Jan-18-16  Jim Bartle: OK, Pete Carroll, too.

WannaBe: <There are 3 coaches who have won NCAA championship and Super Bowl, can you name them?>

<Jim Bartle> got two right, <Phony Benoni> got the last one right.

Anyone gonna try for this one?

<There is one coach who have won NCAA championship and one National Football Championship (before it was known as Super Bowl) can you name him?>

Jan-18-16  Jim Bartle: I don't find it. From the list of AP national champions I don't see any coaches who won the NFL title.

Phony Benoni: <JB> (1) He won both College and Pro Football teams coaching in the same state.

(2) He actually won championships in two pro leagues.

(3) OK, a giveaway. He is the last coach to lose a title game to the Detroit Lions. Enough to destroy anybody's legacy.

WannaBe: In yet another first, two Heisman (winner) QBs will face each other in a play-off game!

http://espn.go.com/blog/arizona-car...

Jan-18-16  Jim Bartle: I was thinking that just can't be, then I looked at the QBs who won the Heisman in the 70s through the 90s: Pat Sulllivan, Flutie, Testaverde, Ware, Detmer, Torretta (??), Ward, Wuerffel, Weinke.

Not exactly a roll call of Hall of Famers. Probably Flutie and Testaverde are the only ones who even reached the playoffs.

Jan-18-16  thegoodanarchist: <Jim Bartle: Jimmy Johnson is the only one I can think of.>

The other one also won his SB coaching the Cowboys.

Jan-18-16  thegoodanarchist: OK, I saw <PB>'s hint and so it is only a matter of time before someone gets it.

Therefore, I will announce that the answer is Barry Switzer, who won 3 NCAA National Titles, IIRC

Jan-18-16  thegoodanarchist: < Jim Bartle: OK, Pete Carroll, too.>

<Phony Benoni: The third has a country named after him.>

Pete Caroll has two US States named after him.

WannaBe: Tigers signed Upton 6 years contract!!
Jan-19-16  Jim Bartle: From what I can see Upton is an above average outfielder, a .270 hitter with 25 home runs. I don't see how he is worth a huge contract at age 28.

Phony Benoni: <JB> Ambivalence agreed with. His offensive game seems to be mostly power, and Comerical Park won't help there. Instead of reaching his prime. his numbers seem to be declining.
Jan-19-16  Jim Bartle: Giving a big contract to Upton is a good example of principle #4. Most teams can find a young player if not as good as Upton, at least fairly close, and pay him under a million.

Justin Upton and his brother BJ also share maybe the flimseist reason ever for getting an SI cover. They share a last name with SI's current favorite swimsuit model, so the three of them were on the cover together.

WannaBe: 2 interesting items in tonight's Oregon St. - Ucla game.

Gary Payton II, plays for OSU: http://espn.go.com/mens-college-bas... Rumours have it, his nickname is the mitten. (okay, not true)

And both teams have a starter that is the son of the coach. Tinkle for Beavers and Alford for Bruins.

Phony Benoni: Now, I can't say I hate Tom Brady, since, I've always admired excellence. When a person wins a number of championships I find that something to respect, not be angry at.

That being said, I'll be rooting for Manning this weekend. I would like him to go out on a positive note. But for it to happen he must play mistake-free football while the Denver defense overwhelms the Patriots offense, setting up short drives, hopefully adding a score or two of their own.

It will be like Dizzy Dean, bedeviled by arm troubles, trying to hold off the Yankees in the World Series with nothing but a change of pace and guile. It may work for a while, but is not likely to end well.

Looking for the Cardinals in the NFC. Panthers haven't been putting teams away, and that has got to catch up with you sooner or later.

Jan-22-16  thegoodanarchist: Peyton Manning is one of my favorite players and a total class act.

But his long run of outstanding regular season play didn't translate well to the post season, where his results have been mixed, to say the least.

The destruction of the Broncos in their most recent SB appearance was surprising to me, but it won't come as a surprise if he struggles this weekend. His arm strength is heading downhill fast.
