Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Penguincw: Ichiro got a hit today, his 2997th MLB hit. Marlins won, as they remain in a tie with STL for the 2nd wild card spot. Dodgers surprisingly just 2.5 back of the Giants in the division. Dodgers face Chris Archer tonight, a pitcher they might consider obtaining.

WannaBe: Good, he can walk across the field inbetween innings and pitch for the Dodgers, after he changes jersey. Of course. =))

saffuna: Can be very dangerous for a team to get too impressed by a pitcher they've lost to, and trade for him. Giants were stifled by Ray Sadecki in early 1966, so two weeks later they traded for him, giving up promising first baseman Orlando Cepeda, who couldn't crack the lineup.

Sadecki was a disaster for the rest of the year, seemingly throwing batting practice, as Cepeda was NL MVP for the 1967 Series winning Cardinals. (He did pitch better in 67 and 68.)

No, seriously, I'm very excited to see Andrew McCluch play in person. He's up there as one of my fav, and must see player.

saffuna: There was a really nice story on McCutchen at The Undefeated on espn.com a few weeks ago, the story of a man who saw potential in him at age 12 or so and helped him play on travel teams and the like.

  saffuna: Here's the story: https://theundefeated.com/features/...

It uses McCutchen as an anchor to analyze the entire world of youth baseball and how players move up the ladder toward the pros. Very good story.

Penguincw: Crazy 12th inning. After Padres extended their home run streak to 24 games (and led 6-4 heading to the bottom half), Jays rallied for 3 runs, which included a 14 pitch at bat!

Meanwhile, Archer allows just 1 ER and 4H (0 BB) in 7 IP vs. the Dodgers, picking up his MLB leading 14 loss.

Jul-27-16  Party Animal: <WannaBe: ChiSox 3, ChiCubs 0. Glad them Cubbies got 2 closers.> I think they should trade Chapman for about a half a dozen hitters!

saffuna: Are those the same Cubs whose entire infield just started the All-Star Game?

Looks like the giant hole is in rightfield, where Heyward can catch and throw but simply cannot hit. At least they got him cheap.

Looks like the catcher doesn't hit much either.

Jul-27-16  Party Animal: <saffuna> The offense that was pounding teams went dead in about mid June. Anybody's guess?

P.S. They have catcher by committee. Miguel Montero who can hit some but can't throw anybody out! David Ross who is either hot or dead at the plate has a strong arm for base stealers & Willson Contreras a good looking rookie who can hit & has a strong arm but is inconsistent due to youth.

saffuna: I still don't see how you can have an outfielder, not even the centerfielder, who just cannot hit.

WannaBe: Marlins score 10 runs on 14 hits. Ichiro not in the lineup, yet... Ugh!!
Jul-27-16  Party Animal: <saffuna> We lost Carl Swarber (Babe Ruth Jr) playing left field early in the season when he collided with centerfielder Dexter Fowler & got his knee blown out! : O

Platoon outfielder Jorge Soler a good looking power hitter has a leg injury. Dexter Fowler who makes the offense go was out with a hamstring and just recently came back. Injuries threw everything off whack.

But you're right about that dud Heyward we picked up from St Louis he can't hit spit!!

saffuna: Schwarber has incredible power. He doesn't even have to hit the ball that well for it to go out. Fun to watch, I hated to see that collision in the first week of the season.

Cubs are still a top team, both in offense and defense. Every team goes through bad stretches.

Jul-28-16  Party Animal: <wannabe> Now this The real Cubs! Chapman looked pretty good eh? ; P

saffuna: Chapman had a big run-in with the Cubs last year, challenging the Cubs bench after throwing at a batter. I guess that is forgotten now.

perfidious: With Chapman at the back end of the bullpen, the single clear weakness of Cubs has been covered--I should not be surprised if they win the whole thing.
