Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Penguincw: Rough night for <OCF>'s team (even though wins don't matter to them at this point), as down to their last out, and tying run in-hole, Cardinals rally for 5 runs to win 5-4 in the 9th.

The Reds' bullpen is the most worked bullpen in the majors, and have also given up the most runs out of any bullpen (not to mention more blown saves than saves).

Interesting SF-MIA game, as Crawford got 7 hits, and Bochy also used MadBum as a PH with the bases loaded and 2 out (he struck out).

There is a report of a press conference to be held by Fielder tomorrow; he has apparently told friends and teammates that he has reached the end of the road after a second fusion.

If he hangs up the cleats, he will finish with 319 dingers--exactly the number another guy called Fielder hit during his ML career.

And David Price isn't even a player on either team.

Penguincw: Speaking of Cleveland, even though this is minor league baseball, there's a 48 game hitting streak going on:

WannaBe: SFG lost (again) and are really hurting since the All-Star break. 57-33 before, and now 64-49.

(If you are really, really bad at math, that is like, as if, 7W and bunches and bunches and bunches of losses)

Aug-10-16  technical draw: The greatest major league record is Fernando Tatis' two grand slams in one inning (also a record 8 RBI's in one inning). But the funny thing and (probably) unknown is that he came up in the next inning with the bases loaded again! But this time no home run. I really think this is an unbeatable record. (BTW I saw the game on TV,)

saffuna: Alex Rodriguez had seven RBIs in an inning in 2009. Yes he did.

Here are a couple of tougher questions:

Who had the most RBIs in an inning for the losing team? Or just, who had the most RBIS in a game for the losing team?

Who had the most RBIs in an inning without hitting a home run? Six would seem to be the limit, and there would be quite a few games to look at.

saffuna: Looking up the six-RBI games, I found the curious A's-White Sox game from 1927 where Bob Johnson drove in six in the first inning without hitting one out of the park. The Sox starter was Marty Stratton, who went 15-5 that year with a 2.40 ERA. He got one batter out and gave up six runs. His ERA would have been 2.07 without this game.

He was relieved by Johnny Rigney, who proceeded to define "taking one for the team." Actually seeming to take five or six for the team.

Rigney went 8 2/3 to finish the game, giving up ten runs, adding a full run to his year's ERA.

Penguincw: Ouch, the Tigers were up 3 heading into the bottom of the 8th, blow the lead. They then re-took the lead in the 15th inning, lose in the bottom half. No 7 hit-games in there though (the most was 3 hits).

< td: I really think this is an unbeatable record. >

There's actually a Wikipedia page on the records considered unbreakable: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_....

Yes, Tatis' record is in there. A lot of these records are truly unbreakable, mostly because the game has changed since the days of the dead-ball era and such, but others, I see can be beaten, although it would require rather a HOF career, or just a game/season for the ages.

< saffuna: Who had the most RBIs in an inning without hitting a home run? Six would seem to be the limit, and there would be quite a few games to look at. >

Without looking it up, I think 6 is the limit, unless of course a batter comes up 3+ times in an inning. There have been some players with 3 hits in an inning.

But according to Wikipedia, 6 is the record: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_...

Well, I haven't looked up all those games, but it looks like the Johnson example you gave might be the only one without a homerun. :|

Aug-10-16  Jim Bartle: Aha! Johnson did hit a home run, in his second at bat. But it was an inside-the-park homer.

Phony Benoni: Aha! Thought I remembered Mpnty Stratton. He was the guy who had a leg amputated following a 1938 hunting accident, but came back to pitch sever years of minor league ball with a prosthetic limb and become a movie starring Jimmy Stewart.

WannaBe: Re: F. Tatis & Chan Ho (It's Going Out) Park

I remember listening to that game on radio, with my good buddy Vin Scully.

Truly unbreakable record, no manager in their right mind (now) would allow a pitcher to stay in and face the same batter a third time, in the same inning, with the bases loaded.

I can potentially see the record tied, two grand-slams by the same pitcher/batter combo, but a third time?! No.

Aug-10-16  Jim Bartle: I had never heard of Monty Stratton. I did notice he his career was really only four years and wondered why, since he was pretty good.

Here are Tatis' grand slams. The second one has to be about the fattest pitch I have ever, a hanging curve belt-high over the middle of the plate.

http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/647926...

Here's the inning:

<CARDINALS 3RD: Bragg singled to right; Renteria was hit by a pitch [Bragg to second]; McGwire singled to right [Bragg to third, Renteria to second]; Tatis homered [Bragg scored, Renteria scored, McGwire scored]; Drew grounded out (first to pitcher); Marrero homered; POLANCO BATTED FOR D. HOWARD; Polanco walked; McEwing walked [Polanco to second]; Jimenez reached on a fielder's choice on a sacrifice bunt [Polanco to third, McEwing to second]; Bragg reached on an error by Karros [Polanco scored (no RBI), McEwing to third, Jimenez to second]; Dodgers manager Davey Johnson ejected by HP umpire Greg Bonin; Renteria singled to right [McEwing scored (unearned), Jimenez to third, Bragg to second]; McGwire flied to right; Tatis homered (unearned) [Jimenez scored (unearned), Bragg scored (unearned), Renteria scored (unearned)]; PEREZ REPLACED PARK (PITCHING); Drew popped to third; 11 R (6 ER), 6 H, 1 E, 0 LOB. Cardinals 11, Dodgers 2.>

How Park stayed in so long I don't understand. I do see that Tatis would never have come up if it weren't for an error with two outs.

Phony Benoni: For a player to hit three grand slams in an inning, his team would have to score a minimum of 20 runs. That's never been done either. We may have to settle for three in an inning, which wuld only require 17.

Penguincw: Why did A-Rod choose Friday though? Why not choose a game at the end of a series?

Would've been interesting to see A-Rod retire on Thursday though, at Fenway Park (that's where Jeter played his last game).

Regardless, if I were Girardi, I would let A-Rod play every game 'til his retirement. Yankees don't care if they lose any games at this point. Even the Red Sox fans want him to play...
