Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

saffuna: Or just switch the king and queen on the board. it's exactly the same game, but difficult to play. All our long reflexive habits have to be re-thought.

Phony Benoni: <WannaBe> If the bases were run clockwise instead of counterclockwise, wouldn't we need left-handed infielder?

The problem of Runaway Flour Sacks has been around for centuries. Back in medieval times, a joust was cancelled when a contestant was injured by one such. The incident was the subject of a famous film, <When Knighthood Was in Flour>.

It's actually like playing black, but moving first (or vice-versa). It's also (at my level) how every chessboard is set up at a club...

Are you saying, that I have a chance, to be an MLB player?

44-44 as Notre Dame scores in one play in overtime.

OhioChessFan: Back, oh, 20 years ago, there was an indoor football team in Cincinnati called the Rockers. They had a contest where they'd throw those small plastic footballs up into the stands, the patrons would write their name and phone number on them, and then try to throw them in a box they'd put in the middle of the field. Pretty boring, really, low value prizes, but things picked up when the contest was over. A number of fans would not try to win a prize at all, but instead would wait until it was over, and then viciously throw the footballs at the hapless employees who ran out to pick up the previously thrown loose footballs laying around the field. Great stuff, much like trying to hit the range guy on his tractor at the driving range.

WannaBe: SFG lost again (@COL), at the All-Star break, Giants were 57-33, 24 games above .500

Today, they are 73-64, which means a record of 16-31 since the break. Ouch.

LAD are not that much better, 51-40 at the break, and 76-60 right now. 25-20 since the break

Arizona's Zack Grienke entered his start at L.A. having won eight consecutive starts at Dodger Stadium. What kind of company is he in with that feat?

The only others to do it are Sandy Koufax, Clayton Kershaw, Ramon Martinez and Don Sutton.>

Who's Sandy Koufax?

But of course, gotta remember they didn't have Kershaw during that stretch. However, they've played pretty well without their ace.

Kershaw looks to return on Friday in Miami. I believe Fernandez (27-2, 1.57 ERA lifetime at home) is due to start.

(in general) I hope this isn't one of those instances where a team performs well without their star player, and when he returns, he and/or the team starts playing poorly. But Kershaw has been one of the most consistent pitchers the last few years, so I'm not worried too much.

WannaBe: <Penguincw> I think LAD planned it that way, intentionally, Ace vs Ace, probably game will go 0-0 into the 8th and it comes down to bullpen.

I will be in Reno Wed, and returning to Bay Area Friday morning, but I may just take the 'under' in that game. =))

Phony Benoni: FOrmer Tiger Alex Avila is not a back-up catcher with the White Sox. So far this year, in around 45 games and 175 at-bats,, he has hit 6 home runs -- and driven in 9 runs.

Yes, that's <six> home runs, and <nine> RBIs.

That's can't be easy. He must be getting some help.

LAD had Chavez pitching the 8th, and Ravin pitching the 9th. Did manager Roberts do that intentionally?
