Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Huh? I never knew that, is that NFL rule, too?

If the offensive team commits a penalty, that have a loss of down (Intentional Grounding), the game is over if clock runs out?

WannaBe: Never mind, R. Hill got pulled and the next pitcher promptly ruined the perfect game.

Penguincw: Surprised he got pulled after just 88 pitches, and a perfect game. The Dodgers were up 5-0, and the pitcher spot wasn't due up soon. I would've let him pitch 'til he gave up the perfect game (or no-hitter).

But hey, Dodgers win.

Phony Benoni: It seems the Chippewas -- more familiarly, the Chips -- shouldn't have gotten that untimed down. Well, I don't like that rule. It doesn't seem fair that a team can deliberately commit an infraction and receive no penalty outside of the stat sheet.

As fans, how often have we helpfully suggested our team not chance a punt with a few seconds left, but instead throw a long, uncatchable pass to use up the time? This should learn us.

Penguincw: Yet another reason not to "abolish" the IBB: http://m.mlb.com/cutfour/2016/09/10....

Man, the Yankees are on a roll. They kinda gave up on the postseason in July, trying to sell away their team for younger talent, but they've won 7 straight, and are just 1 game out of a postseason spot.

Phony Benoni: hardly a reason to abolish the IBB. If a team can't execute properly, they deserve to be punished.

I don't think Sanchez made such a great play, either. It won't take long for other teams to learn how to tempt him into bad swings in that situation.

Here was the scenario, OK St 27, Cen. Mich 24.

OK St have the ball at CMU 41, 4th down and 13, clock shows 00:04

Make me the coach and I would:

<59 yards to your own end zone, 4 seconds left RUN THE OTHER WAY FOR (A) SAFETY!!!!>

Give the ball to the RB and tell him to run to the other way to the 5 or take a safety. OK St, you're up by 3 pts!! The RB's already got 5 or 6 yards head start on the defence if he runs the other way.

Do the math, Cowboys coaching staff.

Phony Benoni: Note for posterity: When I made this kibitz earlier, it had a typo in it which I would rather not have preserved. <WannaBe>, Thanks for pointing it out, but I would appreciate it if you deleted your response as well.

------

I realize there is strong precedent not to reverse officiating calls after the game is over, no matter how egregious the mmistake. Hard to think examples outside of the Pine Tar Game, or the final score in the Harvey Haddix Game But OSU-CMU has to be close to the line, because the correct ruling would have been so absolutely final.

I do hope nobody had Indy +3 ... hee-hee-hee...

Phony Benoni: Hey, Travis, don't get down on the Bears yet. Houston's probably a playoff team, and opening against them ont he road was a tough assignment. You get the Lions at home in a couple of weeks; we'll know more then.

Probably the most encouraging thing about the Lions yesterday was that they were finishing drives instead of kicking field goals. 5 TDs t 1 FG is not their usual ratio.
