Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

saffuna: Mike Trout slid in to score on a close play today. The bat was lying in the baseline about five feet toward third base.

Is there any rule about interference from a bat left "in play"? And is it the responsibility of the umpire to get the bat out of there?

(I assume it is not correct that a 3-year-old batboy will run up and get the bat while play is going on.)

The video is on the espn.com game scores page right now, but I can't link directly to it.

Why are the <Reds> wearing <green> uniforms?

<Jim> Any truth to the rumor that <Mike Trout> was signed because he was willing to play for scale?

saffuna: Actually he was a bit of a comedown for the Angels. Their previous outfielder was <Tim Salmon>.

saffuna: NY-Boston game started at 8:08. It's now 11:22 and they're starting the 8th inning. Only eight runs scored, so that can't be the reason for the slow pace.

Phony Benoni: From the Cincinnati Reds home page:

<...as the Reds -- who wore green uniforms to celebrate Irish Heritage Day...>

Just don't ask me why they're celebrating Irish Heritage Day. Or what it is. I guess the Irish are allowed to take over whenever an equinox approaches.

<Jim> Yes I remember <Tim Salmon>, felt a bit bad for him though. It was an upstream battle for him with the Angels, if I'm not mistaken.

HAHHHHA Good heavens if I'd known baseball was this much fun I'd have become a baseball fan years ago.

Are all of the teams and players fish-related?

Does this mean the <Florida Marlins> are perennially the best team?

Now that I'm "in the know" I feel that an ocean of possibilities awaits..

Phony Benoni: Just looking at the batting leaders: in the AL Jose Altuve (2B-HOU) has a thirteen-point lead. Over in the NL, there are two players tied and even further ahead of the pack: Daniel Murphy (2B-WAS) and DJ LeMahieu (2B-Col).

I wonder if there has even been a year when second basemen led both leagues in hitting.

So far, I've gotten nothing but Miguel Cabrrara for Detroit. Grrrrrr

WannaBe: Let's see if this "Qualifies", 1975, Rod Carew and Bill Madlock, both played multiple positions, so it does cause some debate and convolution.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/a...

It's so funny, going through the names as I scroll down, Mattingly (1B), T. Gwynn (OF), B. Bonds (OF), etc. When looking at these names, you just automatically go to the next year, because you know the position they played.

Man, I'm getting "Old". =))

Phony Benoni: I think I'd have to disqualify Madlock. In 1975 he played only third pase, and that was his primary position throughout his career.

Phony Benoni: An odd statistic of Harry Heilmann in 1925. Scroll down a bit, and check out the 130-point difference in batting average between home and road games

Sheeeeeesh!!

Sep-19-16

Phony Benoni: Perhaps. But you'll note that Heilmann hit .456 <on the road>.

It was just a fluke. His lifetime splits were about even.

saffuna: Madlock was a third baseman.

And a player not appreciated much by the statheads, or really baseball people in general. He was known to care about his batting average and his batting average only, to the point of wanting to sit out against pitchers who were tough for him. Not so much in the first years with the Cubs, but later on.
