Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

saffuna: Stanford playing its second game at the Rose Bowl this year. They'd be satisfied with the same result, when they led Iowa 35-0 at halftime in January.
Sep-24-16  Travis Bickle: <saffuna> Besides pre-historic football when Sid Luckman slung passes to slow footed honkies the Bears have never had a good QB except Jim McMahon who's numbers weren't all that great but he had a really good offensive line with good receivers like Dennis McKinnon, Willie Gault & slot man Dennis Gentry. They also had a TE that could go deep across the middle with Emory Moorehead and we had Hall of Famer Walter Payton.

The Superbowl Champs from the 85' defense might have scored more than the Bears offense that year. lol

P.S. Jay Cutler has the most TD's for a Bears QB. That says it all.

saffuna: When I first started following the NFL around 1960 the Bears had two really good running backs, Willie Galimore and Rick Casares, plus a pretty good tight end, can't remember his name. Later they had Gale Sayers for a few years, and he was virtually unstoppable.
Sep-24-16  Travis Bickle: <saffuna> Saffy, you must have meant this Grobowski at TE but it was 1961 the Bears signed him up.

https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.co...

The Chicago Bears drafted Ditka fifth overall in the 1961 NFL Draft, while the Houston Oilers drafted him eighth overall in the first round in the 1961 AFL Draft. He signed with the Bears and his presence was immediately felt.

saffuna: No, I meant Ditka. I thought he was on the team in the late 50s.
Sep-24-16  Travis Bickle: <Saffuna> That is Ditka the player, here's Ditka Da Coach who coined the phrase Grobowski's as tough unselfish players who get down & dirty...

saffuna: A while back I was asking what would happen if a catcher couldn't catch popups.

Here Buster Posey loses the ball and third baseman Eduardo Nuñez charges in to catch the ball at full speed. It was a really tough play, harder than I had imagined.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=at5...

Great hustle play by Nuñez, who saw immediately that Posey had lost the ball and came charging.

Penguincw: Unbelievable, Jose Fernandez killed in boating accident:

http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/ml....

In respect, the Marlins have cancelled today's game vs. the Braves.

Was looking forward to the Colon-Fernandez matchup tomorrow, but Sep/20/2016 is the last time this young man would pitch. He had such an amazing career ahead of him.

RIP

Kansas City picked off Ryan Fitzpatrick 6 times. The last Jet to throw 6 Int in a game was Joe Namath in 1975>

WannaBe: LAD have defeated COL bottom 10th, and clinched NL West. At home, on Vin Scully's last home broadcast.

I fully expect another first round flame-out. At the hands of Washington Nats.

WannaBe: BOS/TEX are tied in wins, at 92; with CLE 2 back, LAD one game back of WAS for National League second seed and home field in first round.

BOS will have @NYY (3 games) vs TOR (3)
TEX will have MIL (3) and TB (3)
CLE will be @DET (4) and @KC (3)

LAD will have @SD (3) and then @SF (3)
WAS will have ARZ (4) and MIA (3)

LAD won the season head-to-head against WAS.

Mets farmhand Josh Zeid tossed three no-hit relief innings and Israel advanced to next March's World Baseball Classic with a 9-1 win against Great Britain on Sunday in Brooklyn.

Former major leaguer Jason Marquis opened the game with four no-hit innings. Ike Davis went 0-for-3.>

I heard some ol' guy named Sandy might make a come-back appearance for Israel.
