 | | Penguincw: Turning on the TV, and seeing the U.S. presidential debate going on. Question: are any of the presidential debates going to conflict with the MLB postseason games? Looking at the schedule, I think there's a Clinton - Trump debate at 9 - 10:30 pm on Sun/Oct/19 on Fox, but looks like there's going to be 2 LCS games on that same day, with the ALCS game also broadcast on Fox. So, in case that game stretches too long, will the game still be broadcast (or are those 2 events on 2 different channels altogether)? Thanks. |

 | | saffuna: Cubs hit 100! |
|
Sep-27-16
 | | saffuna: OK, the Cubs are 100-56.
Yet starting June 20 they had a stretch where they went 5-15. I can't imagine that a 100-win team often has had such a slump. Take those 20 games away and they are 95-41! |

 | | Phony Benoni: <MissScarlett> As I mentioned last month: Biographer Bistro (kibitz #14988) I would rather somebody else cloned the collection and finished it up. I'm not sure what needs to be done, anyway. |

 | | Phony Benoni: <To All>
You may have noticed I've not been my sunny self of late.. Well, OK, I have. This has not entirely been due to the Tigers. Over the last couple of months, I'v developed a small ulcer and an infected toe on one foot. They appear to be be clearing up, but for a h diabetic these are serious complications which will probably recur. So far, this has affected little more than my mood and state of mind. Plus an extra medical appointment every week or two. Probably a maudlin message like this is another symptom. But I have been snippy and unresponsive of late. So this explanation is more of an apology rather than a bid for sympathy, so just take it and let's get back to normal. That will help me feel better than anything. Particularly you, <Travis>. Something tells me the Cubs' seaons will probably last longer than the Bears'. |
|
| Sep-27-16 | | Travis Bickle: <Phony Benoni: ...Particularly you, <Travis>. Something tells me the Cubs' seaons will probably last longer than the Bears'.> Yes Phony, I'm already looking at projected 1st round draft picks for next May. ; P |
|
| Sep-27-16 | | Travis Bickle: P.S. To the sites Number 1 Sports Pontificator, I hope you feel better real soon! |

 | | WannaBe: <From All> Get yourself better, sooner the gooder!! I know a good Dr. in your area. T. Palmer. =) |
|
Sep-27-16
 | | Phony Benoni: Saying that I'm in the same area as Dr. Palmer is sort of like saying Los Angeles and San Francisco are in the same are. |

 | | WannaBe: Oops, thought you were both approx. around DET area. When did you move to Edmonton? |

Sep-27-16
 | | Phony Benoni: He's close to Lake Michigan, about 200 miles due west of Detroit. Michigan is a bigger state than you might think. Many years ago, a tournament in the Detroit area offered a special prize to the player who came the furthest to play. One fellow drove up from Louisville, KY just to win the prize. He got beaten out by a player from Negaunee, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. |

 | | OhioChessFan: <But I have been snippy and unresponsive of late. > I just attributed it to being in Detroit. |
|
Sep-27-16
 | | Phony Benoni: Say what you will about Detroit, we know how to treat our guest. Last night the Indians clinched the division here, but we didn't hold that against them. No, we broke out the best champagne the city had to offer them for their celebration. And beat them 12-0 tonight. Maybe pitching Verlander was a bit nasty on our part. |
|
| Sep-28-16 | | Travis Bickle: Phony, here's an interesting article on Pro Football showing a decline. The fall in ratings from a greedy fat cat business is causing concern. Sunday Night games, Monday Night & Thursday Night plus in December Saturday games is just too much saturation of the market. Plus players domestic abuse problems, 25,000 commercials a game, Thedanger of head injuries the NFL lied about & players not saluting the flag is all having an effect on Mark Cuban's prediction of a decline in viewership in 2014. http://charlesrobinson1.tumblr.com/ |
|
Sep-28-16
 | | Phony Benoni: Raining like gangbusters in Detroit for tonight's game, and the forecast has it continuing for tomorrow's series finale as well. It would be great luck for the Indians that the games would have to be made up Monday when they should be resting up for the playoffs. And what if they do have to play two make-up games, and Detroit ties with Baltimore for the second wild card, and they have to play a game 163 before the play-offs even start? Let's play three! Of course, they will make every effort tonight and tomorrow to get the games in. And the showers, though heavy at times, are supposed to be intermittent. |
|
Sep-28-16
 | | WannaBe: <Phony Benoni> Saw that on ESPN. Quite some weather y'all have there. While watching the game, I noticed the M. Cabrera got throw out at second while sliding feet first. Then later in a stolen base attempt, (an Indian, I believe) slid head first and was safe. Have there been anything conclusive as whether you should slide head or feet first? I think it's just silly to slide feet first, especially everyone runs heads down, so you already have that slim 'head' start. To go from running position and then slide feet first, the whole (body) motion seem counter to Newton's law. Anyone have their 2 cents to throw in? I'm very curious about this. |
|
Sep-28-16
 | | saffuna: I can't say, except the headfirst slide is really rough on the body. But the worst is the popup slide, because the runner is actually braking before touching the base. |
|
Sep-28-16
 | | Penguincw: Uh oh, Jays blow a 1-run lead in the 9th for the 3rd time in 4 games, so the Red Sox become the final team to clinch a division. Seeding and wild cards still up for grabs. |
|
Sep-28-16
 | | Phony Benoni: When Ty Cobb first game up, it considered a grave breach of etiquette to slide head first. Shortstop K. . Elberfeld of of the New York Highlanders gently corrected him by coming fown with his knee on the back of Cobb's neck during a steal attempt. As young Tyrus was helped from the field, the ever sympathetic Mr. Elberfeld said, "Learn how to slide, you ***(&&(&!!! kid! Cobb recorded in his autobiography that they next time he slid feet first, knocked Elberfeld half-way to left field, and the latter said, "Now that's the way to play the game, kid!". And they got on fine after that. It was a different era. Everybody slid feet first when I was growing up. Was it Pete Rose that started the head first fad? Well, you have a choice. Feet first, you break you ankle. Head first, you break your fingers and wrist. You get paid your money, you takes your choice. |
|
Sep-28-16
 | | Phony Benoni: Well, they're in another rain delay but they got through five innings with the Tigers up 6-3. It can rain all night now for all I care. Unfortunately the Penguins lost to the Orioles, so they pick up on ground on Baltimore. |
