 | | WannaBe: <Baseball Tonight:
Incredibly, that's the first career walk-off HR for @teixeiramark25. He had the most career regular season HR without a walk-off HR.> And just so happens, it was a Grand Slam. |

 | | Penguincw: < Unfortunately the Penguins lost to the Orioles, so they pick up on ground on Baltimore. > I just realized that today (Sep/28) is the 5 year "anniversary" of Game 162 back in the 2011 season. Doesn't quite feel like Game 162 today though. But remember how the AL and NL wild card races finished that day (especially the AL). Probably the best night of baseball ever. And of course, on that day, Baltimore rallied in the 9th to beat a divisional rival, just like today. |

 | | WannaBe: Was that the year TB rallied from 7-runs down to win in 12 innings? We were all online following 2(?) games and all going nuts? Gooooooood time with Gooooooooooder friends. |

 | | WannaBe: Potentially/Could be huge, ARZ/WAS called after 6 innings, 3-0 D'backs won. Now, 3-3 LAD game, Dodgers entered tonight's contest 2 games back of WAS. In case of a tie, LAD have head-to-head tie-break over Nationals (see my previous post). |

 | | Penguincw: <WannaBe>
Yep.
Yeah, just like to add on to that above post of mine. On Sep/28/2011, Boston blew the lead in the 9th, Baltimore rallied and won in the 9th. On Sep/28/2016, Boston blew the lead in the 9th (ouch), Baltimore rallied and won in the 9th. I remember watching Game 162 of the 2011 season, but I was inactive on this site at that time (to watch MLB of course). |

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: <WannaBe: I think it's just silly to slide feet first, especially everyone runs heads down, so you already have that slim 'head' start. To go from running position and then slide feet first, the whole (body) motion seem counter to Newton's law. Anyone have their 2 cents to throw in? I'm very curious about this.> In Finland, everybody uses head-first; though it's generally more of a dive and less of a slide than in American baseball. Accordingly, I suspect feet-first sliding may have something to do with some quirk in the rules of the American game, like tiny bases; it's not the fastest way to get to the base, but you're guaranteed to hit it and stay in contact with it. |

 | | WannaBe: Found this 'ancient' article, dated 2008:
https://www.wired.com/2008/09/scien...
According to the article, 0.02 seconds faster if head first, and gaining 5 inches. |

 | | Phony Benoni: When sliding head first, do taller players get there more quickly than shorter players? Rain delay in Detroit approaching 2 hours, and I don't know what is going on. I'm maybe 5 miles from the stadium, it hasn't been raining for a couple of hours, the forecast is clear until about 6:00 when the deluge resumes. There was very substantial rain overnight, so maybe the field is still unplayable.. |
|
Sep-29-16
 | | WannaBe: Well, Shaq would definitely get to second base on a head-first slide than Mugsy Bogue. But Mugsy would out-run Shaq anyway... On a different note, AL Wild Card is Tuesday, if CLE/DET do not get played today, and need to be made up (Monday) and if Detroit ends up tied for second wild card, it will be total chaos! What if Monday's make up game gets rained out?? Wheeeeeeee. |
|
Sep-29-16
 | | WannaBe: Out of curiosity, I looked it up, it's 2 hour flight to both Kansas City and Atlanta from Detroit. They can still start the game at 11PM and have plenty of time to travel. |
|
Sep-29-16
 | | Phony Benoni: They'll give up before that. The skies are already getting ugly again. |
|
Sep-29-16
 | | saffuna: The advantage of the headfirst slide that I see is that it's harder to make the tag. Normally it's just one arm near the base, while it's both legs in a standard slide. A smaller target. Here's a classic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8B... |
|
Sep-29-16
 | | WannaBe: Okay, game officially postponed, to be made up Monday, if necessary. But I was checking out the conversation page for this game: http://www.espn.com/mlb/conversatio... I sorted it by "Newest" and some of them are hilarious, keep in mind, the company name that you work for is next to your post. One guy wanted to know if the game will be played, because he wanted to move the bet money to another game. (Insurance Sales Agent) Another one posted "Hi, I'm single", (Human Resource Management Intern) Not sure how "Serious" one should take on these message boards. |

 | | WannaBe: We have something that happened in MLB that's more rare(r) than no-no, perfect game, or a cycle. Tonight, we have an official tie-game!
<Jesse Rogers
ESPN Staff Writer
The Cubs and Pirates played to a 1-1 suspended game on Thursday meaning it will go down officially as a tie. The game has no meaning in the standings and the teams won't be able to make it up before the end of the reg season this Sunday. The last tie in MLB was 2005, the last time the Cubs played to a tie was in 1993. All stats count.> <Baseball Tonight
@BBTN
The @Cubs and @Pirates game ends in a tie. Yep. Last Pirates tie?
8/24/1998 (5-5 vs Cardinals)
Last Cubs tie?
5/28/1993 (2-2 vs Expos)> |
|
Sep-29-16
 | | Penguincw: Hope it doesn't have any implications on possible tiebreakers. Oh well. Fly the "T".
---
I also noticed that the Marlins have been eliminated from the postseason. That's good news, in terms of scheduling. Imagine if the Marlins finished half a game back of the wild card, so then that makeup game would have to be played, and then a Game 163. Would be really emotional and all, but probably a scheduling nightmare. That CLE-DET potential problem is more realistic, with my home team hanging on by 1.5 games over <PB>'s home team. Toronto will face the 2nd best team in the AL, while the Tigers face the worst team in the NL. |
|
Sep-29-16
 | | WannaBe: This AL Wild Card's gonna get interesting, TOR @ BOS, and BAL @ NYY with DET @ ATL. And that one postponed game hanging over CLE/DET. Now, CLE potentially would care about that game, too. If they end up 1/2 game behind BOS for 2nd seed, who have the head-to-head tie-break? If by the end of Sunday, CLE and BOS are separated by 1/2 game for Home Field, (and DET is out) will MLB have the postponed game played? I need to go and check head-to-head between BOS and CLE. |
|
Sep-29-16
 | | WannaBe: BOS won the season series over CLE 4-2. So there's the answer to that question... |
|
Sep-29-16
 | | WannaBe: What happened tonight at St.L answered my question regarding fan interference about 1.5 month ago... Tied game, bottom 9th, man on first, double by Molina, but was it fan interference? If fan interference, umpire can send runner from third to home (according to J. Miller on KNBR Giants radio), if it was deemed "standard ground rule double", runner goes back to third. |
|
Sep-29-16
 | | WannaBe: Today is the anniversary of "The Catch" by W. Mays, but the better trivia would be: 1. Who was playing against the Giants
2. Which game of the World Series was it?
3. What inning did "The Catch" took place?
4. Who was the batter?
4a. Who was the pitcher?
5. What was the score of the game at the time of the catch? 6. Who won that game?
7. Since the game took place at the Polo Ground, who won the Indianapolis 500 that year? Okay, #7 is a joke. |
|
Sep-29-16
 | | saffuna: 1. Cleveland
2. First
3. Don't know
4. Vic Wertz
5. Don't remember, but he was taken out and came into the dugout and said "Well, I got my man."6. Giants
7. Stirling Moss |

Sep-30-16
 | | WannaBe: According to SFGate, there's 20% chance of rain Sunday afternoon in the Bay Area. LAD/SFG play at 1:15PM, imagine the fun if that game is postponed until Monday, and we have 3-way tie NYM/STL/SFG. And we get 3 way tie with a CLE/DET make-up game on Monday. Heck, with all the possibilities (http://www.espn.com/blog/jayson-sta...) We may not start the play-offs until Halloween, and World Series' not gonna start until Thanksgiving. |
|
Sep-30-16
 | | WannaBe: Oh boy, it's raining in Boston, will they have to play 2 Saturday? |
