Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

WannaBe: As of right now, DET is 1/2 game behind for 2nd wild card, TOR lost, BAL won, and DET won.

LAD/SF tied at 2, PIT/STL are in a delay, but it's after 5 innings, and Red Birds are way ahead. Probably will be called and official game.

NYM won, so if my poor math skills are correct, they have clinched at least a Wild Card spot.

Phony Benoni: If everything breaks right, the Tigers could have an interesting schedule coming up.

Sunday: Atlanta, final game of season

Monday: Detroit, make-up game with Cleveland

Tuesday: Toronto, tiebreak game for 2nd wild card

Wednesday: Baltimore, Wild Card game

Thursday: Texas, begin ALDS

That's five games in five days, in five different cities.

WannaBe: Interesting decision by B. Bochy, SF starting someone named Ty Blach, LAD have someone named Kershaw. LAD heavy favourite, -180.

Why, in the middle of Wild Card hunt, you pitch a rookie? Who only have pitched 9 innings of major league ball?

There's precedence on the Giants for doing that. The Giants needed a win on the final day of the 1993 season (the last no-wild card year) to tie Atlanta. They pitched rookie Salomon Torres, in his eighth career start. The Dodgers bombed him and the Braves took the division. Burkett and Swift, the best starters, had gone the previous two days, but there were other options.

Maybe Bochy is just in effect giving this game away against Kershaw, and will go with his best tomorrow.

WannaBe: St.L won, defeated PIT 4-3, that means second wild card is still possible for the Red Birds.

But they would need SF to lose today and/or Sunday's game. SF do not have tie-break vs St.L or NYM 87-74 . In case of second Wild Card tie, SF will go to St.L, and winner there will go to NY.

As of right now, St.L 85-76 is 1/2 game behind SF 85-75

WannaBe: Well, B. Bochy is approaching that "Genius" status...

The kid got his first hit, win against Kershaw, 8IP 0R 0ER. Heavy favourite -180 lost. Anyone who took SFG and under (7) can go to window and collect.

WannaBe: Due to Baltimore's lose, AL Wild Card picture is as muddled as it can be. Looks like Detroit better get the field ready for a Monday game. Just in case.

Koufax, Erskine, Maglie, Bill Singer, Valenzuela, Reuss, Kevin Gross, Ramon Martinez, Nomo and Kershaw,

Random guesses:

- Lost Game 161 to a Giants rookie (would be nice not to give SF a chance at their "even year" run thing) :(

- Had at least 1 season with a BB:K ratio of 1:10 or higher.

- Dodgers that threw a no-hitter

saffuna: Close--no-hitters called by Vin Scully. Four by Koufax, two by Erskine.

WannaBe: To further confound/compound AL Wild Card, Tigers lost to the Braves tonight.

Better get those grass mowed, draw them chalk lines around home and down the foul poles, grill up those 'Dogs, melt those cheese for Nachos, get the beer taps connected. Monday (Night Baseball) in Detroit.

WannaBe: How about them Cal Golden Teddy Grahams? After upsetting Texas at home earlier in the year, today, they beat previously unbeaten #18 Utah at Berkeley.

Could be a very interesting Stanford/Cal game this year at Berkeley...

Phony Benoni: Well, I dunno. Tigers lose tonight, saying 1.5 behind Baltimore. Toronto leading late, can also go up 1.5. That means Detroit is eliminated if both win on Sunday ir Tigers lose. (And even with Verlander pitching, anything is possible.)

Even if the Tigers are eliminated, they will have play Monday if the game determines Cleveland's seeding. That will be a climax with a capital ANTI.

Stopped 'em at the one-yard line twice to win.

Ouch, bases loaded, no one out, Miggy up. He strikes out, next guy grounds into double play.

< Toronto leading late >

Just like that, bullpen woes continue, as Osuna balks home the tying run. Luckily the O's and Tigers have lost, Jays got Sanchez (14-2) starting tomorrow.

Still, nice to see NYY, OAK, BOS, ATL, etc. playing hard even though not much is on the line for them. Reminds me of 2011. NYY could've very well thrown that game vs. TB to make it hard for BOS, but NYY actually played for real, but still lost. Well, they did rest their pitching that night...

< That will be a climax with a capital ANTI. >

BOS won the division this week pretty much in the most anti-climatic way possible (if that's the right way to describe it). BAL rallied to beat TOR that night, to secure the division for BOS. BOS ended up blowing a 3-run lead in the 9th to lose vs. NYY. They still celebrated despite a pretty embarassing loss.

WannaBe: If Seattle win (currently losing to Oakland), Mariners would have 87 wins, depending on TOR game, Tigers would fall behind by 1/2 game in second Wild Card.

Good thing we have Sunday and Monday, and Tuesday, and Wednesday to figure this out.

World Series in Thanksgiving, anyone?

Oct-01-16
Premium Chessgames Member
Penguincw: YES! Jays hang on to win a huge game, and now the AL WC looking much clearer. BAL and TOR tied, TOR holds the tiebreaker. DET and SEA forced to win each of their next 2 games and hope BOS and NYY (and ATL/OAK) help them out.

BOS falls half a game behind CLE for the 2nd seed, if CLE and TOR both win tomorrow, CLE-DET will not happen.

---

The NL WC is pretty clear, STL and LAD must win if STL wants to make it to the postseason for a 6th straight season. If it does happen, Game 163 in STL, winner goes to NYM for the WC game, winner of that goes to CHC for G1 of the NLDS.

< World Series in Thanksgiving, anyone? >

That's pretty early. ;)
