Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

saffuna: In 1990 Eddie Murray played a full season for the Dodgers and hit .330, highest in the majors, yet didn't win the batting championship.

I bet that's the only time that's happened.

Oct-02-16  FairyPromotion: Hey there Mr. Moody,

Let me start by saying 'thank you' for all the wonderful work you've done to make this site better. Especially keeping the records of previous GotD PotD's is a really helpful tool for many members.

I just wanted to point to a couple of errors in the recent GotD's done by CG, that seem to have resulted in errors on your collections as well. Today's PotD W So vs Aronian, 2015, was actually used as game of the day on Oct-16-15, but it is not listed in Game Collection: Game of the Day 2015. That's because in the morning of that day the link on the homepage was directing us to Aronian vs Morozevich, 2006, which was GotD with the same pun on Feb-11-07.

The same happened again on Mar-14-16, when the GotD was Topalov vs Shirov, 1998, but in the morning the link on the homepage was directing us to Nakamura vs Caruana, 2016.

These two mistakes resulted in the wrong games appearing in your Game of the Day (2015 & 2016) and Game of the Day Pun Index collections. Of course they are minor mistakes, and definitely not your fault, but I thought that I'd share them, in case you'd want to fix them.

Phony Benoni: <FairyPromotion> Thanks. Corrections are always welcome. I think everything is correct now.

The Aronian games were particularly confusion because <CG> has the wrong date in the heading for Aronian vs Morozevich, 2006; it was actually Game of the Day on Nov-08-09.

I have been updating these indexes as soon as the games are posted at midnight (Eastern Time), but instances such as these have me thinking it might be better to wait until later in the day. Plus, I'll be able to get a bit more sleep!

Phony Benoni: Oh, yes, the W8illie McGee thing. Sort of like the Red in 1981, when the season was divided into two halves because of a strike. They had the best overall record, but didn't make the play-offs because they didn't win either half!
Oct-02-16
Premium Chessgames Member
saffuna: I didn't realize that it was well-known. McGee was traded to the American League, leaving his .335 behind in the NL. His average dropped below Murray's .330 with the A's.

1981 was just nuts for so many reasons, especially that the first half winners were playing for nothing in the second half.

Penguincw: Ah, nice to see <WannaBe> at the LAD-SF game and not being able to jinx the Jays' ongoing no-hitter. :) There seems to be many no-hitters at the very end of the season the last few years (Bailey, Zimmerman, Alvarez, Scherzer).

But looks like BOS just got their first hit, and tied it on a home run, 1-1. :(

If CLE and TOR both win, there will be no games tomorrow (at least in the AL). For DET, Fulmer is due to start that possible makeup game. He needs 3 innings to qualify for the ERA title. The last rookie to lead the league in ERA was Mark Fidrych, who was also a Tiger; Fulmer has an ERA of 6.98 in 4 starts vs. CLE this season.

Phony Benoni: Boston would have to win for Fulmer to get his chance. And it's not automatic. Both Sanchez (TOR) and Verlandere (DET( are biw ahead of him based on today's performances.

Penguincw: Hmm, out of the 10 wild card games so far (in the 2012+ era), 4 of them were between 2 teams within the same record anyway, and 8 of them the 2 clubs finished within a game of each other. This year will also be the first without an NL Central team.

Home team has only won 2/8 games. The wild card winner is 2-6 (.250) in Game 1.

In the ALDS, wild card game winners are 1-3, but 3-1 for the NLDS. Compare this to 8-9 in the ALDS and 8-9 in the NLDS in the 1995-2011 era.

Might be a small sample, but it seems like the wild card game does (well, duh) have an effect on the advancing team.

WannaBe: There was a potential No-no and I wasn't notified?? Y'all are fired.

Best part of the day, I got to take pictures of Vin (to be uploaded, soon. Promise)

And during the seventh inning stretch, after God Bless America, all the Giants announcers (radio/TV) crammed into one booth, which was immediately next to visitor's booth, and led the crowd a la Harry Caray for "Take Me Out to the Ball Game"; and even got Vin Scully to sing.

The PA at the stadium was apparently getting Scully's microphone feed, and Vin can take some singing lessons in his soon to have free time, should stick to announcing, or retirement. I would think there's a youtube video of that, by now. =))

Working on the pictures that I took.

WannaBe: This is probably my fav of Vin picture:

https://wannabecg.shutterfly.com/pi...

You can view the whole album here:

https://wannabecg.shutterfly.com/pi...

The day started very cloudy and some drops of rain, but it was over pretty quick. (You can see how the weather changed as you go through the pictures)

The one thing that "Bothered" me about taking picture of Vin, is that people would just walk up, hold up their cell phone and start yelling "Vin! Vin!"

(I subscribe to National Geographic's theory on taking photos, don't create it, let it come to you.)

He's busy doing pre-game preparations, and you hollering his name, and expect him to answer to every call?? That's just dumb, dumb, dumb.

Took me about a good 20 minutes and a lot of false alarms (plenty of pictures of Vin's forehead, anticipating him looking up) for me to get the pictures that I wanted.

But doggoneit, I did it! =)

  WannaBe: In this picture:

https://wannabecg.shutterfly.com/pi...

Can anyone identify/tell me who Vin Scully's interviewing? It's killing me, I don't know who the other guy is.

This picture shows the statue of McCovey, which is interesting. It's the only statue not in the proximity of AT&T Park, but all the way across the cove:

https://wannabecg.shutterfly.com/pi...

In the trophy case pictures, one side (Window side) are the championship rings, 2010, 2012, and 2014. On the other side are the "Triplets", World Series Trophies.

In the Coke bottle pictures, e.g. https://wannabecg.shutterfly.com/pi... the background bridge is the Bay Bridge, the one that had a section collapsed in 1989 Quake Series vs Oakland. People often mistake that for Golden Gate Bridge.

One, GGB is painted a completely different colour, and two, that bridge is quite a few miles away...

In the shots of the bay, where it's clear, (not cloudy), you can see all way the way to Ports of Oakland, and the hills of Alameda County (possibly even Berkeley)

I like the upper deck seats at AT&T Park, when the weather is nice, you can see some nice yatch/kayak and clear across the bay.

Oct-03-16  Travis Bickle: That looks like Babe Ruth...
Oct-03-16  Travis Bickle: Well Phony, I guess Da Bears will win at least 1 game this year.

  WannaBe: Random thoughts:

Mark 2021 on your calendar, that's 5-years after Vin Scully officially retired. He's definitely first ballot HoF'er.

Karma: D. Baker vs B. Bochy, Nats vs Giants. All we need is 9 year olds serving as bat boy. Oh, wait, that only happens in World Series.

Still be funny to see ex-manager vs current manager for WAS/SFG

LAD will lose to Nats 3-1. Mark my words, after being swept over the weekend, I didn't see any fights in them Blue Crew

I think I also predicted a Red Sox WS win that year.

I actually predict Dodgers will win the series, probably in 5. Not a matter of supporting the team or whatever, just a prediction. As for the NLCS, I don't think the Dodgers can beat the Cubs or Giants, but Mets, they can beat them.

As for how the Jays will fare, the Jays have the same problem as the Giants. Both can easily defeat their opponent in a 5 game series, but 1 game, ace vs. ace (technically Jays don't have their "ace" on the mound, but still a good pitcher nonetheless), I don't know.

But it's the postseason, you never know what can happen.

WannaBe: Baltimore will start Tillman 16-6 3.77 ERA vs Toronto's Stroman 9-10 4.37

On paper, looks like Baltimore will win. There, I've jinxed them... y'all Canadians can thank me later by sending me 6-pack of Molson or Moosehead, or better yet, both!! =))

San Francisco will start MadBum 15-9 2.74 vs Thor 14-9 2.60 (easier to type Thor than his real last name, I can't even remember how to spell it!)

This NL WC game will probably go extra innings, and won't end until NYSE opens Thursday morning.

Another interesting aspect of this match-up, is that MadBum throws left, but bats right, while Thor throws right, but bats left.

In 2016:

Thor have 58AB 11H 3HR and .190 BA
MadBum have 86AB 16H 3HR .186

  WannaBe: Thank you , ESPN:

<Adam Rubin
ESPN Staff Writer

The Mets may not want to show up on Wednesday. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Madison Bumgarner has a 0.60 ERA on the road -- the lowest road ERA in postseason history (min. 25 IP).

He leads runner-up Bob Gibson (0.97), then Mariano Rivera (1.02), Sandy Koufax (1.04) and Lefty Grove (1.11). Bumgarner has appeared in seven road postseason games. San Francisco is 7-0 in those games.>
