Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

I feel like an idiot trying to correct what I thought was a typo or something. Although not going to lie, this ad is still fairly poorly written...

Enough about that. Interesting WC game going on. BAL definitely has the advantage now, since their bullpen is better than the Jays. Regardless of who actually wins this game, a lot of people seem to want to see a TEX-TOR rematch, considering what happened last year and earlier this year.

Sorry, some fan threw it onto the field. ;)

(but for real, it's sad how Jays fans keep doing that; I'd like to say it doesn't represent the fanbase as a whole, but it seems to be a recurring pattern)

  saffuna: A general chess question:

Say I were a player with skill around the 1500-1600 level, not very good but not embarrassing.

But I have a phenomenal memory and I memorized every line in the Chess Encyclopedia, every line to its end.

How well would I do in tournaments, and what might my ranking be?

OhioChessFan: Don't ask me to defend my answer, but I'd guess ELO 2200. I think you'd kill most people under 2000. In tournaments, I think people would choose openings where they get to call the shots, and book up accordingly, eg, with White, I think you'd run into a lot of French or Caro Kanns and Slavs. With Black, I expect you'd run into a lot of people opening with the English.

saffuna: That sounds reasonable. I wonder how often I would reach absolute winning positions just by following theory. And how often would I be able to spot the weakness of out-of-book moves? I have to assume, since the Encyclopedia is five volumes of small type, that most good moves are covered.

saffuna: I'm reading analysis about Showalter not bringing his reliever with the 0.54 ERA last night. Everybody thinks he was nuts.

I think Showalter was using regular season rules, not bringing the closer in until the team had a lead. But that is not a one-game strategy, it's a season-type strategy intended to get good use out of the closer without wearing him out.

But last night it was only that game, no thought about conserving his arm for the future. And he never got in the game.

saffuna: A loss meant going home. No more games. Get your best pitcher in there at a key moment. Overuse him so he can't go for 3-4 more days if necessary. Have to win that game.

Penguincw: < I'm reading analysis about Showalter not bringing his reliever with the 0.54 ERA last night. Everybody thinks he was nuts. >

I agree (obviously I'm biased since the Jays won, so I'll try to be neutral).

FTR, if I were in the situation, I would've actually brought Jimenez (who I assume is the LRP) in to pitch to Carrera (so the entire 11th, and a few innings more).

People criticizing Showalter for this move kinda annoys me, especially since this is all hindsight, and hindsight is 20 20. I wonder if Britton had entered the game and lost the game, what people would've said ("Should've brought in the righty Jimenez to face the righties in the lineup.")

But again, it's the postseason. Managers ideally want to stick to the same strategies as they've done all season long, but the need to try to conserve the bullpen and all is not as necessary.

I'm sure in the days before the bullpen was really developed and all, the best pitcher on the team (so the closer in this case) would always come in to pitch in jams; now, the road teams usually reserve them exclusively for save opportunities.

Phony Benoni: If your general chess knowledge and understanding remained at about 1500-1600, memorizing the openings is not going to help to an great extent.. You'll probably have better positions after 10 or 15 or maybe even 20 moves, but there comes a point where you would be on your own, with a better position but not one that wins itself.

It's as if you had a chess engine with a weak playing algorithm that couldn't calculate very well. Installing an opening book will not make that much of a difference..

Memorizing openings becomes more important as your general chess strength grows Then you will know how to exploit the advantages you get--and, just as important, you can't allow your stronger opposition to get opening advantages they can exploit.

In the spirit of full disclosure this election year, I should stipulate: (1) I almost never memorized openings, nor was very successful when I tried; (2) Your Mileage May Vary. But, in general, I think good chess judgment is more important than memorizing openings.

saffuna: <...but there comes a point where you would be on your own, with a better position but not one that wins itself.>

Definitely. When I reach the end of theory, these are the possibilities:

1. I have a winning advantage so clear.
2. I have a definite advantage, positional or material. 3. The game is even.

Against an 1800-2000 player I would win in the case of #1 almost all the time. I would lose almost every game which reaches #3. Despite the advantage in #2 I would have no idea how to convert the advantage. (This is the story of my chess life, reaching clearly good positions out of the opening and not knowing how to take advantage.)

I also haven't included the cases where the opponent plays a move not considered by theory (and therefore probably bad). It is unlikely I would know how to take advantage in many cases.

So the question is, how often does a 2000 player make it through a long theoretical line and stay equal or only mildly worse.

saffuna: <But, in general, I think good chess judgment is more important than memorizing openings.>

I agree, for the reasons already given. I follow theory to move 20, reach a good position but don't understand it, don't know how to play it.

Penguincw: Any mid-game predictions? My prediction remains the same: Giants win. FTR: This was my prediction bracket for the postseason (yeah, I know it already started):

ALDS
- <TOR> - TEX
- <BOS> - CLE

NLDS
- <CHC> - SF
- <LAD> - WSH

WS

- <CHC> - BOS

(take a good guess at my WC and LCS predictions)

Yes, I believe this is the year the Cubs end their streak.

---

Just looking at the actual teams, I think the best team in the majors facing off the team with even year luck is far more interesting than a NLCS rematch, especially with the injuries the Mets have.

Penguincw: Giants take the lead! Maybe this is why Showalter didn't use his closer yesterday...*

A friend of mine and I had a bet on who would this game. I chose Giants. He chose Mets. Loser gives winner a quarter. I'm about to get paid! :)

* I do agree with the Mets' move to bring in the closer for the home team in a tied game in the 9th though. Pretty common.
