| Nov-01-16 | | Travis Bickle: Yo Phony, this is Pete. I'm in a jam at the track bettin' the ponies.. Who do you like for tonight's game? http://www.gannett-cdn.com/-mm-/b8a... |
|
Nov-01-16
 | | Phony Benoni: Travis, I recall that, after 1945, the Tigers didn't get back to the World Series until 1968, when they had the best record in baseball. They fell behind 3-1 against the Cardinals before coming back to take the Series in seven, winning the last two on the road. They had their best pitcher going in game 6, and won in a rout. That's an awful lot of portents in favor of their 1945 opponent. Ask Pete about how much such portents mean. |

 | | WannaBe: Hilarious. Last time Tomlin pitched, Cubs were -200 and Indians won that game 1-0, and Tomlin pitched like Cy Young. Today, the Cubs were -140 (reasonable odds, on the road, hostile environment) and Tomlin pitched like he's suppose to, for a pitcher with 4.40 ERA during the season. And gave up second most HRs in AL. (Weaver for LAA have 37 to lead AL. Tomlin have 36) Tomlin's coming off short rest, J. Arrieta's coming off extra day of rest. Why today's line is not closer to -180 is beyond me. |
|
Nov-01-16
 | | Phony Benoni: Oh, he's still pitching like Cy Young.

 | | Phony Benoni: The Washington - Cleveland game, in the third column, holds the record for most lifetime wins by the two starters: http://archives.chicagotribune.com/... Not completely sure, but I think this is the only game they started against each other. |
|
Nov-01-16
 | | Phony Benoni: If you think this game is bad, see the first column of page 4: http://archives.chicagotribune.com/... |

Nov-01-16
 | | WannaBe: Early prediction odds for game 7, Even money, O/U 6.5 Let's see how close I am tomorrow. =)) |
|
Nov-01-16
 | | Penguincw: And the Cubs win. That 3-1 choke looking much more likely now, as anything can happen in Game 7. Any parallels to the NBA Finals? I remember a huge play in that game for Cleveland was LeBron blocking a shot late in the game. What would be the baseball's equivalent? Gunning down a runner at the plate? No predictions for tomorrow's game, just gonna try and enjoy it. |
|
Nov-01-16
 | | WannaBe: For tomorrow's game 7, Mad(don) scientist manager will have the following lineup: Batting first, pitcher
Batting second, catcher
Batting third, 1B
Batting fourth, 2B
etc...
Batting ninth, RF |

Nov-02-16
 | | WannaBe: Kluber now have a chance to join a very elite club, to go 3-0 in a series. The last pitcher to go 3-0 in a series? M. Lolich. Bonus info: Because the AL won the All-Star game, and hence was awarded home field advantage, who was the winner of 2016 All-Star Game? Kluber. |
|
Nov-02-16
 | | Phony Benoni: A 9-1 sequence may have happened at some point, especially in the Olden Days when the catcher customarily batted eighth. Somebody probably did it once just for a joke. |

Nov-02-16
 | | WannaBe: It was even money, but odds are moving!!

Well, that didn't take long! The Cubs have been bet to -113 road favorites in Game 7 at Cleveland at the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook after opening at even money. The Indians are +103. William Hill has it at Cubs -114/Indians +104.> |

 | | perfidious: <PB> While I've no proof, my feeling is that White in J Nolte vs Browne, 1968 may well have been Jerome 'Jerry' Nolte, a player of ~1900 strength whom I remember from the Boston area in the late 1970s. |
|
Nov-02-16
 | | Phony Benoni: <perfidious> Thanks for the tip. I'll have to check a little more on him. The "Chess Life" crosstable for the1968 US Open listed <J. Nolte> as being from the Wisconsin, but the next reating list from January, 1969 put him in New Hampshire and rated around 1900. That sounds like the person you remember. |
|
Nov-02-16
 | | Phony Benoni: <perfidious> I'm going with <Jerome Nolte>. Prior to 1969 I only see J. Nolte from Wisconsin, rating peaks in the 1800s. The January 1969 rating list, which covered the 1968 US Open, gives J. Nolte from New Hampshire in the 1900s. Later lists give only New Hampshire, and in the 1972 annual he is identified as Jerome. Thanks again for the tip. |

 | | Penguincw: This looks familiar: Cubs entering a series clinching game in the 8th inning, ball hit to the shortstop that <could've> ended the inning, but nope, it continues... |
|
Nov-02-16
 | | WannaBe: OMG... That's all I have to say for now. Tied game. |
|
Nov-02-16
 | | Penguincw: Not sure if I jinxed it, but I'm at a conflict of interest. I want the Cubs to win, but I made a bet saying Indians would win Game 7... I am mad that the game is tied though. I wanted to try and stay awake to witness the final out of a World Series for the first time ever in my life, but looks like I might arrive late tomorrow... |
|
Nov-02-16
 | | saffuna: I remember another game where a team trailing 6-3 scored 3 in the eighth to tie. |
|
Nov-02-16
 | | Phony Benoni: If that's the same rain we're getting in Detroit, they're not restarting any time soon. |
|
Nov-03-16
 | | WannaBe: NorCal need rain, can you send it our way, instead?? |
|
Nov-03-16
 | | Phony Benoni: Blame it on the A's. If they had made it to the World Series, you'd be deluged. |
|
Nov-03-16
 | | saffuna: Get Elias on it! When is the last time a player hit a home run and struck out on a bunt the next at bat? |
|
| Nov-03-16 | | Deus Ex Alekhina: Two outs, bottom of the tenth....can u feel it? |
