Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Penguincw: September 28th. Ah, anyone still remember Game 162 of the 2011 season (Sep/28/2011)?

That was for sure an epic night of baseball. Although looking at the standings this year, COL is about to secure the 2nd wild card spot, and then that's it. Still got 1 division up for grabs and some seeding, but for the most part, it's not going to be an entertaining last weekend of baseball. Oh well. Onward with the playoffs.

Penguincw: Well, one interesting thing that will happen over the weekend in Andrew Romine (DET), who's planning to pull a Campaneris/Tovar/Sheldon/Halter by playing in all 9 positions, in 1 game.

saffuna: LIstening to Cards broadcast of the game with the Cubs. Mike Shannon is a trip, a Harry Caray slowed to about one-tenth speed. He just drawls out the play and doesn't get excited except on the very biggest plays. It's like he's seen it all before.

"Ground ball to short, and HE'S not running hard. They don't run hard any more." He and the other announcer had been complaining about players who don't run out ground balls.

  WannaBe: Speaking of Houston...

With their next win (regular season, that is...) MLB will have 3 teams with 100 or more victories. LAD, CLE already have crossed the century mark, and never, ever in MLB history have <4> teams finish with 100 or more wins. (And never, ever more than <2> from the same league.)

(From 2011 - 2013 HOU lost 100+ games each year! (106, 107, 111) Astros made the WC in 2015 (86 wins), beat NYY but lost to Royals in the Divisional round.)

Last time this happened, was 2003. ATL & NYY 101, SFG 100. This is the same season where Florida Marlins beat NYY for the World Series title.

On a completely unrelated note, something happened at Wrigley on Oct 14, 2003 in a play-off game when Marlins visited Cubs.

WannaBe: To make matter even more interesting, HOU 99 wins, CLE 100 wins, 3 games left to clinch AL Best Record.

LAD have 102, 3 games at COL over this weekend, COL is 2 games ahead of MIL for second WC.

And MIL is at St.L this weekend. Wheeeeeeee

WannaBe: HOU won at BOS, becoming the third team of 2017 to win 100 (or more)!!

So, 2 teams from AL have crossed the century mark, and one team from NL.

Penguincw: Heading into the final day of the regular season, and well, not much postseason stuff on the line. LAD with a win tonight secures home field advantage throughout the postseason, but other than that, not much else to play for. I'm sure there's some tiebreaks that need to be settled regarding home field advantage (ex. who gets it if BOS-ARI meets up).

Regardless, all games tomorrow will start around 3 pm ET.

WannaBe: Well, no chance of no-hitter today, so 2017 only have one no-hitter, by MIA (Edinson Volquez). A few pitchers got close calls.

2016 also saw only one no-no, 2015 was a bumper year, 7 no-nos. The last time MLB did not have a no-no was 2005.

WannaBe: Is the last game of the season "Meaningless"??

DET (64-97) currently down 4-1 Bot 7 to MIN, SF (63-98) tied with SD 4-4 top 9

Who want to be the worst team of 2017? =)

Penguincw: < Well, no chance of no-hitter today ... >

There could've been a no-hitter today though. In recent years, there have been many no-hitters near the end of the season (ex. Scherzer, Alvarez, Zimmerman and Bailey).

< Is the last game of the season "Meaningless"?? >

Well DET won yesterday, but if they did lose, they wouldn't have cared, because Andrew Romine did indeed play in all 9 positions. It was a close game too, as he even picked up a hold, in a 3-2 game!

And well, unlike other sports leagues, in MLB, there's not as much incentive to tank to try to get that 1st pick, especially where there are over a 1000 draft picks.

Oh well, onward to the postseason now!

Penguincw: I made some MLB postseason predictions in August: Phony Benoni chessforum.

In terms of predicting the matchups, the only one I got wrong was predicting LAA instead of MIN being the 2nd wild card game, and the 1-2 seed of HOU and CLE.

Just for fun, I would like to predict the winner of each series (I might post how many games later):

ALWCG: <NYY> - MIN

ALDS: <CLE> - NYY, <HOU> - BOS

ALCS: <CLE> - HOU

NLWCG: <ARI> - COL

NLDS: <LAD> - ARI, <WSH> - CHC

NLCS: <LAD> - WSH

WS: LAD - <CLE>

Hard to predict the winner of HOU-CLE, but I think the winner of that series (unfortunately) will win the World Series.

CLE looking a lot like GS from NBA. After blowing a 3-1 lead, the player who lost to them in the semi-finals joins their team in an effort to win the championship. I think this pattern continues.

WannaBe: As a Dodgers fan, I can't root for NYY, so hence, Go Twins.

Not really sure, or care about COL/ARZ tomorrow... LAD this season, have losing record against these two teams. 9-10 vs COL, 8-11 vs ARZ.

Will post my thoughts on the Division Series once Wild Card winners are determined.

WannaBe: NYY and MIN played 6 times this year, with NYY winning 4-2.

Santana (MIN) 0-1 and Severino (NYY) 1-0 against the opposing team.
