Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: Johnny Damon gets credit for one of the most heads-up plays I have ever seen. A one-person double steal?!

But there is still hope. Cliff Lee goes tonight, so the Phils need another big performance out of him. Then Petitte will pitch on short rest, so that can't be a lock for the Yankees. And if it all comes down to game seven, Sabbathia hasn't been lights out in the Series.

But I think the technical term for this attitude is "whistling in the dark". The Yankees have shown just too much power and savvy to be stopped.

Nov-02-09  Jim Bartle: I couldn't figure out what in the world was happening when Damon took off for third. I guessed he'd been caught off the base and had no choice.

I noticed Posada arguing strike calls against him a lot. In my days as an umpire it was always tough with a catcher at bat (or a pitcher, to a lesser degree), because any time you'd call a dubious strike he'd tell you he wanted that one when he was catching.

Nov-02-09  YouRang: That's certainly the first time I've seen a guy steal two bases on one pitch. I have no idea why nobody was covering third.

It kills me that the Yankees came up with 3 runs all after there were 2 out and bases empty. But given them (especially Damon) credit for working hard for the win.

Nov-02-09  NakoSonorense: I couldn't even see the third baseman in any of the replays! Where was he?

The series is pretty much over, although for me it ended last Sunday when the Angels lost.

Phony Benoni: <NakoSornorense> The Phillies were in a shift formation, with three infielders on the right side and the third baseman in the shortsop position. He was the one who took the throw from the catcher on the steal attempt, and Damon just outran him to third.

Lidge probably should have realized the situation and gone over to cover third, though there's no guarantee he could have beaten Damon to the bag either. Or the shortstop should have covered second base on the steal. Either way, it's a lapse on the Phillies' part, and cost them dearly.

Nov-02-09  Jim Bartle: There's something about Phillies' strategy I don't understand.

Twice, trailing by more than one run in the ninth, they've sent Matt Stairs to pinch hit, with nobody on base.

Now Stairs hits a lot of homers, but his on-base average has to be pretty low (he hit .200) and he's not going to walk when a walk and a homer are in effect the same.

They really should be sending up somebody with the best chance of getting on. Stairs shouldn't hit until he represents at least the tying run. But neither Joe Morgan nor Jon Miller questioned this on the broadcast I was listening to.

Nov-02-09  technical draw: Well, if the Yankees win tonight you can start calling me "El Predicto". A lot of people think that the Yanks will lose on purpose to take the series back to New York. They always say the same thing and I always say the same thing, "nonsense". It's hard enough to win a game and you're going to throw one away? To another dog with that bone.
Nov-02-09  A.G. Argent: Jim, first we hear of your umpiring days. Well, first for me anyway. Where, at what level?
Nov-02-09  technical draw: I was going to ask the same question.

Phony Benoni: <JB> Some very odd strategy going on. I'm sure you loved it in game three when Rivera was brought in with one out in the ninth because it had become a save sitation.

But you're right that the Stairs thing makes no sense at all. Maybe you could argue that he wouldn't be pinch hitting for any of the next few players coming up, so it was "use him or lose him"--but there was always the chance of extra innings.

Nov-02-09  Jim Bartle: Umpiring: from age 17 to 20 or 21, mainly American Legion and Babe Ruth level (in Oakland and Berkeley), which I learned to handle fairly well. I also was the base umpire for games with the Stanford freshman team (frosh not varsity eligible then) for most of one year, but honestly that was too tough for me. The game was just too fast.

keypusher: It's funny watching the World Series with no sound on -- looks like a gathering of stoic leaf-chewing aborigines, one of whom throws a ball from time to time.

The ump certainly wasn't giving A.J. any love at the plate. Wonder how happy Girardi is to have both Molina and Burnett's bats in the lineup, especially after the Phillies scored three in the first inning?

Nov-02-09  Jim Bartle: I'm watching while listening to Miller and Morgan on Internet radio (couldn't stand O'Brien and Sutcliffe on the TV), and I've almost come to like the 10-second delay.
Nov-02-09  technical draw: Umm, uh, the Yankees are letting them win so they can finish it off in New York.
